The proprietor, Emiliano Andeani waited on him and showed me various frames without pushing any particular price point. This was on a Saturday and I was leaving Rome the next day to return home. Emiliano offered to examine my eyes and prepare the progressive lenses that I required, promising that I would receive the glasses in the U.S. within 10 days. Here it is 9 days later and the frames arrived with perfectly prepared progressive lenses. Emiliano is a gracious and highly professional optician about whom I cannot praise too highly.

At Heathrow Airport (London), on our outward journey from the UK, an arm fell off my spectacles. Although sufficient for playing prop forward in the dark places of rugby, my eyesight is limited without them. I had forgotten to pack my spare spectacles. So, we did what any sensible tourists would do: we asked AI on my iPhone to identify the most highly rated optician in close walking distance from Roma Termini. The AI was very accurate. While my wife and I enjoyed a light lunch at the café-bar next door, the charming ladies successfully replaced both spectacle arms so that our holiday could continue and my ability to see could be resumed. It took them less than an hour. The price of the emergency repair was a fraction of what it might have been charged in the UK. The charm quotient was rather greater. Excellent opticians. There was also a very jolly little dog called Pongo. And, as one of the lovely ladies had been romantically connected to Marzio Innocenti, the former Presidente della Federazione Italiana Rugby and Italian international back row, it wasn't just a positive experience, it offered heightened conversational interest in my patchy French and some English. E, dato che una delle gentili signore aveva avuto una relazione con Marzio Innocenti, ex Presidente della Federazione Italiana Rugby e terza linea della nazionale italiana, non è stata solo un'esperienza positiva, ma ha anche offerto un maggiore interesse di conversazione per il mio francese stentato e il mio inglese un po' approssimativo.
