Welcoming LGBTQIA+ venue, with a slightly artsy, alternative, sort of hipster flair. A pretty common criticism of places in this general vein is that you often feel like an outsider there if you are of any non-straight sexual orientation and gender identity other than strictly gay and male. Not the case at Blue Moon: bisexuals, pansexuals, asexuals, all welcome, as long as you follow basic rules of polite behavior (no instigating a fight, initiating unwanted advances, or giving off intentional signs you're there to cause trouble, although none of that should need to be said) and are respectful to the other patrons - there is even a short poem by the front door making the point that anyone can have a decent time here, and Blue Moon absolutely lives up to it. There's a healthy mix of friendliness and a no-questions-asked attitude at this establishment that says a lot in its favor. While I can not speak to this from experience (and I will leave that to someone who can), Blue Moon also has a reputation as one of the venues in the city that is most hospitable to transgender and nonbinary clientele. If you are a trivia geek, this place regularly has Jeopardy on TV on weekdays and the staff and customers treat it with much the same enthusiasm that many other venues treat Sunday night football. Strong, colorful cocktails and staffed by affable, quick-witted, and observant bartenders who can always keep up an excellent and entertaining conversation. 5/5 stars.

Could the staff at Blue Moon be any nicer? I doubt it! I decided on a whim to stop in last night to see an extended family member who is a performer while they were there. It was my first time going on a Saturday night performance night and I didn't expect that the bar would be THE place to be! WOW. It was awesome. Since We didn't plan ahead and waited until the kiddo's were in bed, the bar was already filled to capacity when we arrived. Line at the door. My cousin & I found the majority of those in line to be high spirits, patient, friendly, & calm despite the wait. It was a really merry & upbeat crowd. And that was before we entered for the special event! The doorman was quite nice and I gained quite a bit of respect for Blue Moon when I got to the front of the line. I was at the front of the door for about 10-15 minutes. I could have gone in at one point when there was room for one but was waiting for my cousin to be able to enter. And so here's what I observed & my thoughts. So I have some family members who are well know entertainers. They play shows locally and nationally. So I tend to get invited to shows and know their crew. I also have my own personal connections to neighborhood staff & business owners. I'm not trying to brag or anything. I'm just trying to explain my own beliefs in how individuals should behave when they have a connection to a show. Its my opinion that it's inappropriate to go to the front of the line & demand to be let in immediately and have a hissy fit when a place is at capacity and other people have been waiting for a long time. What I saw last night at Blue Moon was this- Multiple times people tried to cut the line and enter while the bar was at capacity. The doorman was still nice to those individuals but stated to everyone that the door policy is that all patrons having equality when the bars at capacity. Who you know, your gender, preference, relationships, etc, all won't give anyone special treatment over someone else who has been waiting. Which I think is really cool. I saw a couple people try to pull the special treatment card at the front door last night & the Blue Moon staff wouldn't have anything to do with it. It was really cool of the door staff to treat all of their guests equally AND state that all of their guests are import and equal. It might sound like a small silly thing but that's important. After entering the show last night was AMAZING. I can't say enough about it. As always the bar manager runs an amazing bar. I was at the bar and a patron that I don't know accidentally knocked over my drink. The bartender immediately cleaned up the spilled drink, handed me a napkin in case anything was on my jeans, and double checked the drink that I had been drinking to replace the drink they had just made me.

Fun fun times. Visiting the Pittsburgh area for a quick weekend getaway for football. We love drag so we were found this spot online what an amazing dive bar. The drag was definitely different and we had an awesome time and we met some great people. The drinks were great, priced well and the bartenders extremely cool. Once the drag show got started the place got crazy packed and that's when the real fun started. We are big RuPaul Drag Race watchers so we knew Sharon Needles season 4 winner and we've met Alaska Thunderfuck a few times in Jersey. Anyway very cool place to visit if you're in the area.

Yay!!) the back patio was super cute, and large sized with string lights overhanging and multiple different sections for a cozy intimate vibe. We elected to sit at the bar, after we were able to grab two stools, (was pretty packed when we came in). The menu specials are adorable with different options, to include non-alcoholic drinks and snacks, let's not forget the candy bar! We had a few different drinks, I chose all of mine from the specialty menu, he chose some on tap draft and specialties. All super excellent. I had the lavender menace and the mermaid magic, along with a lavender lemonade. He had the pretty pretty princess and the archibald on tap. There's a store upstairs by the owner who was kind enough to let me shop during off shop hours. The shop is a combination of spiritual/witchy items and pride items. I purchased several items and the shop has a website storefront that offers shipping and e-gift cards. I got to meet Fred! The sweetest pupper ever, just absolute love. I left my boyfriend at the bar for shopping and petting a dog for a good 45 minutes. Oops.

They should be welcoming to everyone, of course, but as a queer witch myself, I was right in their demographic. I had been so excited to finally go and then it was just sad and odd. I tried to initiate conversation with sincere compliments at Maude's but there was weird tension. At the bar I felt invisible for quite some time and had to request service. It was so frustrating I didn't get a second round. I suspect others have had similar experiences there. For a bar that strives to be inclusive and welcoming , I felt I'd worn out my welcome as soon as i arrived.

But now here I was in Pittsburgh struggling in near-freezing conditions and without Jamie. I was staying the night at the Hyatt House down the street and decided to brave the cold to come here. Mind you, it was a weeknight, and the place was fairly empty at around 8PM. I remember there were three guys at the end of the bar and a couple of loudish girlfriends blathering on about the lack of available men in Pittsburgh. Struck me they were minimizing their chances in looking for them here. I just sat at the bar waiting for the bartender to show up and probably would've left had it not been cold. Besides, it wasn't like I was in WeHo where I could just go next door. He finally arrived and took my order, the $5 Tequila Sunrise (Photo 9). Definitely a nice price, and he mixed it with the right potency. A little chit-chat would've been nice, especially as an out-of-towner, but alas, this was not a Tokyo mama-san snack bar. This was Pittsburgh, and this left coaster felt a bit out of place, even at a gay bar. My friend and I come here every Friday for happy hour. Over the past few weeks, we noticed that our tabs didn't seem to match what we were actually drinking, so this time I decided to ask for our receipts. That's when we saw we were both charged for shots of Espolón tequila--something neither of us ordered. I was drinking margaritas and always ask for well tequila in mixed drinks. This makes me wonder how many times we've been charged for drinks we never had. Completely unacceptable. When we brought this up, we were told to speak with the manager to correct the tab. He was extremely rude and immediately accused us of ordering the shots, even though he wasn't present. He was more focused on watching RuPaul than helping. He then claimed my card had been declined weeks earlier, which forced me to call my bank and dispute a double charge. Thanks for the extra hassle. You come here expecting a good time and leave not wanting to return. Management clearly needs to address issues with staff to prevent this from continuing. That so-called manager has no business working in customer service. I've only seen him on Fridays and Saturdays--about 5'10", skinny, wearing sweats and a gray Carhartt beanie. He's always rude, but this encounter was beyond the limit. This happened around 9-10pm in the middle bar. If you decide to come here, be careful and always ask for your receipt--otherwise, you may end up overcharged.

I had spent a lot of time since moving to Pittsburgh looking for somewhere comparable to my old haunts (926 and Waterworks) that I used to frequent in Tallahassee. Cattivo was it. Namely, a friendly bar where you can go to dance to all the classics and weird music for sensitive, artsy types of a darkly poetic inclination, admirers of the likes of the late Anne Rice's (R.I.P.) Lestat and the crew from The Lost Boys. A place to feel the energy of '80s New Wave and Post-Punk, classic Gothic Rock, Darkwave and Industrial, and so on. The features of the first-level bar are pleasant. Quality sound system, at least two pinball machines, a digital jukebox, round bar table lined with illuminated glass tiles, and decent selection of cheap beers and standard bar cocktails at about the prices you'd expect. Bartenders are pleasantly cheery and talkative, and will sometimes cue up a series or movie on Netflix (another similarity to my former haunts of long ago that I appreciate) to provide background visuals. Much like one of the former haunts I was looking for a substitute for, Cattivo has an ambiguous and possibly vestigial reputation for being a space that attracts LGBT+ clientele. On that: a few of the reviews here are slightly old and from a time that Cattivo advertised itself as a gay bar oriented mainly towards women dating/seeking women. To my knowledge this is no longer Cattivo's "main thing", although it is at the very least queer-friendly and does still sometimes sporadically host events intended for people who date or are seeking others of the same sex. Should anyone ask, however - I have no idea at present even from hearsay what someone's chances would be of hooking up with someone or finding a one-night stand here based on their own gender and sexual orientation, or the gender or sexual orientation of who they might be looking to meet. Another review by another reviewer may be able to speak to that. The upstairs/main floor mostly hosts dance nights of the types mentioned above. The downstairs hosts a variety of events, ranging from EDM nights packed with people wearing kandi and glow necklaces to local DIY punk acts. As a result the main level/upstairs (chill and laid-back) and downstairs (always filled with a raucous din) give off two completely different energies. As a bit more of a hobbit than a dwarf, let me say I greatly prefer the creature comforts of the upstairs to the party animal attitude of the downstairs. This is clearly going to be a matter of individual inclination, however. At the moment Cattivo is open relatively limited days/hours and the kitchen is closed. That may be subject to change in the future. If this place sounds like somewhere that matches your energy, highly recommend.
