But it was only really recently that I discovered the outlet mall at Westgate. Located right behind the Westgate shopping centre, this little strip of stores includes the likes of Bendon, a Nike factory store, an all-things-USA shop, and Jet Couture to name a few. The Nike and Bendon stores were two places I was ecstatic to find. Both had a wide selection of products available and everything was pretty reasonably priced. If it is outlet shopping you're after, I would still definitely recommend trying Dressmart in Onehunga first, but if you're already out west and just need new running shoes, lingerie or boardies then the Westgate Outlet will be able to take care of you without breaking your bank! Tip: There's plenty of free parking available both at Westgate shopping mall and in front of the outlet strip!

There's not much to it really - just a random collection of outlet stores which attracts the bargain hunters on the weekend. I guess the best stores are the Nike and Bendon outlets as you can get some good deals here. There is nothing over $20 in the Bendon store and my wife comes here to stock up on underwear from time to time. There is a hairdresser called Vivo which my wife had a bad experience in - the sink was really high and she had a crick in her neck for days. Overall, it's not all that exciting or stimulating but that comes with the terroritory in West Auckland. Good for a few bargains but not what you would call great retail therapy.

The lady who looked after me was lovely and totally made me feel better about my splurge by admitting that she had bought the same pair in leopard earlier in the day. She also gave me a loyalty card... not that I need any additional motivation to buy shoes. I must admit, most of the brands they stock i've never heard of but the shop assistant tells me that they're largely from Aussie. A little pricey is ol Mischief, but this an example of the whole 'what you get is what you pay for' scenario. When i last wondered in here, my nephew (4) was really taken with some of the shoes! He would pick out the fanciest, shiniest, most sparkly high heel and bring it over to me and ask if I'd like to try it on. I was starting to worry about his love of shoes but thought he could obviously just appreciate quality as much as I can. I noticed down the back there are a few shoes on sale. This is a pretty important thing for me because most of the prices are well above my price range and so sale items are unfortunately my only option.

For a while there they were looking like they've looked for years - generic, plain and like every other mainstream shop out there. Now they have a whole lot more going for them. For one thing they have a heaps of new brands like All about eve but have picked better pieces from the old favourites like Rusty and Billabong. This particular Amazon has heaps of awesome shoes. We came here with my brother who is seriously picky with shoes and he loved them all. For once it was him that was taking ages while the girls sat and waited for him. In the end he decided on an awesome pair of leather Vans. I wanted some myself but unfortunately they only came in boys sizes. Too bad.

Besides that there's a lot more to love about the place. It's the only shop quite like it in Mairangi Bay, which makes it special in itself as it's a stand out from the masses of cafes that surround it. It is primarily a shoe shop but personally I don't think of it this way. The shoes are aimed at an age category a tad older than mine so it's not very often that I find a pair of shoes that I'd want to buy. It does happen.. just not that often. I like it because of the accessories. There's some lovely handbags and jewelry. Specifically Karen Walker jewelry is sold here and, even though it can be pricey, it is beautiful and the ultimate gift for a special friend. Also a few restaurants just past the foodcourt on the outside. Three stars for the very limited under cover car parking. A mall this size needs more covered spaces for the erratic Auckland weather.

I'm always perpetually frustrated with shoe shops and their lack of size 4 & 5s, especially when it means I need to start looking at Barbie shoes in the kids section! So naturally, finding a stylish pair of walking shoes is difficult to come by, but not at Platypus. I walked in and came out with 2 pairs of shoes! Only two downsides: the staff, though friendly, could have been more attentive, and the shoes were pretty pricey for what they are! If they last 3-5 years though, I shall be back! ;-)

Purchased a sweater from Hartleys online which was $269! Wore it twice and it looked terrible due…read moreto "pilling". Returned it and requested a refund. However the sweater was returned with a battery operated de piller. This cuts the fibres. I would have expected a jumper at this price to last the whole season. Hartleys did not want to know about the issue. I will never purchase another item at Hartleys or from Loobies Story.
