La Conchiglia - Linguine alla Bolognese (and my bride with her lunch)

La Conchiglia's popularity with tourists and locals means two things: 1) the staff is running their asses off to keep up with client orders and, 2) this review is done out of appreciation, but utterly unnecessary. Our first time, we came here for dinner, arriving right around 1900 when it opens for dinner. We had no idea how lucky we were to even get a table until we saw subsequent couples get placed on a wait list outside. Within moments of opening at 1900, a line of hungry waiting customers had formed which, by the time we finished dinner an hour and a half later, had grown to circa 20 people. For a micro restaurant with seating for perhaps 35, this is an impressive.. The food was excellent, and in unusually good portions from the viewpoint of a typically overweight American (me). We went back today for lunch because we want to see the staff one more time and to get some pictures before leaving for Cagliari :-) Note: One con is the times shown on Yelp where it shows the restaurant is open all day until 2300. Instead, and characteristically for Italy, its is ACTUALLY open from 12-1500, and then again from 19-2300.

La Conchiglia - According to a German and Swiss tourists we dined with, this is the best Italian beer around. Enough said!

We were staying close by so it was very convenient and we made a booking (by calling via WhatsApp) about a week out for a 7:30 slot when they open for dinner. In mid September on a Sunday it wasn't full but there were clearly a bunch of locals and regulars judging by the way pleasantries were exchanged with the efficient wait staff (all men). The restaurant is largely open air to the sea with plastic screens that can be lowered if it's cold or windy. It was very pleasant dining Al fresco with a view to the water. The expansive menu, while featuring " English translations" needs to be taken with a bit of an adventurous spirit as some of the English is a pretty crude approximation of the actual dish. For example we ordered two starters both sounding similar one with tomatoes mozzarella and zucchini (what might otherwise be called a caprese salad with zucchini-excellent and fresh by the way) and another called cheese, zucchini and tomatoes (which was more like a sheep's milk queso fundito-melted cheese with bits of zucchini and tomatoes served with a small crostini-also excellent). As in much of the island, there is some English but it's spotty and we had a bit of a challenge trying to explain our plan to share a pasta (shrimp and langoustine with a rich creamy sauce-YUM!) and then a main -the fresh local fish (which is available in 3 preparations: grilled, salt baked or Mediterranean style -with olives, tomatoes and potatoes and olive oil-a great recommendation from our waiter) but we stumbled our way through with a smile. Topping it off with a bottle of local Vermentino wine and it made for a splendid meal. Since the two couples shared things, the bill was less than 150€.

Dinner #1: Complimentary ANTIPASTI MISTO SALUMI E FORMAGGI (platter of local cured meats, cheeses and bread). All the fish and seafood dishes were fresh and cooked to perfection. SPAGHETTI ALLE VONGOLE (spaghetti w/ sweet little clams); FRITTO MISTO CALAMARI E GAMBERI (calamari & prawns deep fried in light batter); PESCE ALLE GRIGLIA (grilled catch of the day). Meal ended with a delicious Sardinian dolce called SEADAS, a crisp airy pastry filled with sweet soft cheese and drizzled with golden Sardinian honey. A perfect end to the meal and worth ordering even if you're so full you swear you couldn't eat another bite. You can. I promise. Dinner #2: Fresh caught SPIDER CRAB 2 ways, first course was a simple yet divine crab broth with crab roe and fregola (small pasta similar to couscous) followed by the main course of fresh whole crab. The pure white crab meat was sweet and soft like a salty sea mascarpone cream. As delicious as it was I could have just eaten a whole pot of the crab soup and died happy. Gloriously happy. Dinner #3: MAIALINO ARROSTO (roasted suckling pig). This was the single most delicious meal of pork I have ever tasted in my entire life. Salty-crisp skin that shatters between your teeth like glass and rich, moist, tender meat that melts like butter. The suckling pig we ate that night fulfilled its life's purpose when it arrived in maestro Lino's kitchen. I cannot over-emphasize how perfect a meal it was, accompanied only by a platter of mixed grilled vegetables. If you eat only 1 meal in Sardegna, let it be the maialino arrosto at Lino's trattoria!!! Dinner #4: TRUFFLES!! Meal began with ANTIPASTI MISTO (heirloom tomato dressed in olive oil and aged red wine vinegar, assorted cheeses, olives, bread). 1st course was room temp POACHED EGGS with gloriously runny golden yolks and grated *black* truffles. 2nd course was warm poached eggs with grated *white* truffles. Most decadent poached eggs of my life. 3rd course was al dente TAGLIATELLE tossed in olive oil, butter, and more grated truffles! The simple pasta seasoned to taste with salt & fresh ground black pepper was a perfect showcase for the rich, earthy flavour of Sardinian truffles from Laconi City. Just when I thought I couldn't eat another bite, Lino placed a 4th dish on the table: BRAISED BABY GOAT RIBS.... with shaved truffles! Not only do I adore goat, but this was the most tender, succulent goat meat I've ever tasted. The ribs were plated in a pool of bright red-orange drippings which initially made me a bit apprehensive. By the end, I was using the last crusts of bread to soak up the glorious fat drippings and savour just one last bite before surrendering defeat. We finished our last meal with espressos and an ice cold shot of MIRTO before rolling ourselves up the hill to bed. Not only is the food delicious but Lino and Marlitha make guests feel as warm and welcome as family. Even their adorable dog Daisy filled the empty spot under the table where our own pups usually sit. Despite speaking limited Italian, we were honoured to share a glass of wine with our hosts and enjoyed several animated evenings of conversation, proving that excellent food can bridge language, culture, and country. Salute!
