I always get Blowfish BBQ when Hootie pops up at Trace Brewing. It's truly the best BBQ I've had in my life! My usual order is the pulled pork sandwich combo which includes generous portions of vinegar coleslaw and smoked Mac and cheese. The meat is always super tender, smoky, salty, and flavorful. The coleslaw is unique - peppery, spicy, and vinegary. Almost has a pickled vibe to it. If you can't handle spicy foods you may want to skip it, but I love shoveling it onto my pulled pork sandwich. The Mac and cheese is my deathbed meal. Hootie leaves it in the smoker so it has a delicious smoky taste. It is squishy and sooo cheesy, just absolutely delicious and it compliments the meat perfectly. Last time I was there I also tried a smoked chicken drumstick. It was so tender that the meat fell right off of the bone. The spice rub was delicious and resulted in super crispy skin, and the chicken was super flavorful all the way through. They have 6 different sauces you can choose from - BBQ, spicy BBQ, Carolina gold, spicy Caroline gold, hot, and vinegar. I love the spicy BBQ and the Carolina gold, but I recommend getting a few and trying them all! Not a miss in the bunch. Service is walking up to a table and ordering, paying on a square card reader, and getting your food in a to go container. They don't have a physical location that you can go to that I'm aware of, so I just check local breweries food truck menus to stalk down where they'll be! I was not disappointed. Gentlemen serving was extremely nice and answered my many questions and offered suggestions as to what I should order. I ended up with a combo pulled pork, slaw and Mac and cheese. He even offered a suggestion on sauce. The $13 for this combo was well worth it. I definitely couldn't finish my order. The pulled pork was great with the spicy bbq sauce added. The Mac and cheese was over the top good. I'd say 3.5 really. Brisket was very good but had way too much pepper. I took the bun off and it was covered with it. We tried 4 sauces that we enjoyed. The macaroni and cheese was decent but missing an ingredient, not sure what. The cole slaw was very bland and almost brown, wouldn't get that again. Fantastic BBQ food-truck style! They set up shop at Brew Gentleman's in Braddock on Friday evening, which is where my fiance and I caught them. Really good food, HUGE portions, good prices, and we got to enjoy our meal in Brew Gentleman's outdoor patio area - nothing but good things to say. For just $17 we got a pulled pork sandwich, full side orders of cole slaw and mac & cheese, and a loaf of cornbread. That was plenty of food for two of us! You can get a single sandwich with two mini-sides for $13. Our friends got those and they were big too, but good for one person. The pulled pork was so flavorful by itself! BBQ places often have bland meat and lots of good sauce but the meat here stood alone. They did provide several sauce options which were fine but not special. The cole slaw was not traditional (creamy) but rather quite spicy. I liked it a lot and it's healthier than the normal stuff. The mac & cheese made up for that healthiness - it was very oily and cheesy and came in just a humongous portion. So good though! I just wouldn't recommend eating an entire side of that by yourself. The loaf of corn bread was wrapped in plastic so I was suspicious at first, but I was wrong. It was actually still hot from baking and had a nice sweet flavor with just a hint of cheese. Had the opportunity to try Blowfish at Trax Farms today. It was the opening of Arsenal Cider at Trax too. Picked up a couple of Brisket sliders, the smoked Mac & Cheese and Slaw. The sliders were very good. The brisket had a nice flavor with a little smoke taste. There was a mustard sauce that seemed to be a standard mustard and a BBQ sauce that was pretty good. The Mac & Cheese definitely had a smoke flavor just wish it used a little sharper cheese to add to the smoke flavor. The slaw did not have any real distinguishing flavor. It's real deal smoked meats. I grew up in Texas. It's next to impossible to find good BBQ in PGH. This mobile food truck style operation might not be quite as good as the BBQ back home, but it's damn good for Pittsburgh. The guy who runs it was super friendly. I recently started smoking meats and he answered all of my noob, nerd meat smoking questions and said feel free to reach out for tips. I personally think he over peppers his brisket a bit, but that's a small gripe. His smoked mac n chz is ridiculously good and he loads it up. My wife and I can split a combo plate and be stuffed. He's got like 5 different sauces. Gold and Spicy Gold were both great. Blowfish is worth checking out. read more

Had the pleasure of tasting his food when he was parked outside of The Brew Gentleman on a Friday night. The line was long, so I figured I'd be in for a treat. The menu consisted of big smoked chicken legs and thighs, smoked sausage, baked smoked mac and cheese, smoked smashed cheesy potatoes and what looked to be a vinegar based coleslaw. His prices were quite reasonable too: you could choose your meat and two sides for $8. I got the meal deal and went with a thigh (that was essentially 1/4 of the chicken) potatoes and mac. Bbq sauces were on the side ranging from sweet to spicy. His portions were huuuuuge and I couldn't finish it all, but believe me when I say he rubs that chicken down with a magical spice blend of love and goodness because he made me like dark meat chicken enough to clean the bone. In my opinion it didn't need any sauce, but the hot stuff did compliment it nicely. The mac was solid and I'd go for it again, as I am a fan of the baked mac texture. Since it was a one man operation the service was a little slow, but he was handing out orders with a smile and he delivers a quality product at a very cheap price. The only experience I had with Blowfish BBQ was at the Burgh Bash. Both the drumstick and MacNCheese were honestly delicious and he was so generous with his portions.. not a piece of chicken on a toothpick.. you received an entire drumstick and a whole side of mac n cheese.. there were probably 400+ people at the Burgh Bash so he was so kind to give everyone that much food! I personally think Lisa did a great job explaining the taste. Chicken was smokey and tender and the macncheese also had a smoked taste which i didnt know was possible. I would love love love his BBQ chicken and mac n cheese recipe! He mentioned at the bash that right now his store is out of a food truck but he is looking into space in Braddock. Lucky for me, Blowfish sets up shop outside of The Brew Gentleman on a regular basis, where I have easy access to this habit-forming bbq. As a quick run-down of menu items: Smoked mac - smoky win Chicken drumsticks - meaty win Redskin potatoes - starchy win Brisket - beefy win Cole Slaw - secret spicy cayenne win Other items - I haven't tried them...potential, strike that, probable win. You can't go wrong with a combo plate and your choice of brisket or chicken. Step up to pro-level and upgrade your platter with mac and potatoes for a few dollars more. This guy is amazing. I had a chicken thigh and mac n cheese at the burgh bash Thursday night. I'm not a fan of dark meat. In fact I can't tell you the last time I even had chicken wings. It's been month. That said this BBQ is just wonderful. It's smoky and tender. The seasoning was just perfect and I'm very picky about my BBQ. I would love to see what sauces he has because Im a tomato based sauce fan. Not big on the vinegar style sauce that is popular in this area. The mac and cheese was wonderful. So, I stopped out to their food truck after drinking a bit in the Gentleman's Brew Pub. I waited in line for a while as the guy who was taking the orders and payment yapped with zero expediency with a lady customer in front of me. I feel the conversation was needlessly prolonged as it was beginning to downpour as it is oft-want-to-do in PGH. He finally took my order, and apologized for my having to wait so long. I was at a Hangry Level of 10, so both said customer and he were lucky. Also, the guy on the grill was yapping away, and taking his time. Maybe I'm like an impatient New Yorker, or maybe I've worked in the service industry for 15+ years in the past and like to be treated as a customer. Who knows. The truth is out there. With that being said, I have never been here before, and decided to order order smoked sausage combo, and asked for smashed potatoes as my side. Well, I was told they were out of smashed potatoes, and being very hungry, I opted reluctantly for the mac-n-cheese. I am a pasta freak, but not really into mac-n-cheese ever really, fwiw. However, the mac-n-cheese was up there with THE BEST MAC N CHEESE I'VE EVER HAD. So tasty, so smoky, so much fun in my mouth! The smoked sausage was neither juicy nor hot, but it was edible. I can't recall what else was in the combo because, like I said, "I'd been drinking". Anyhooter, I went back into the Gentleman's Brew Pub to yuk it up with my co-hort, and returned to eating the MOST DELICIOUS MAC-N-CHEESE a bit later, and wow, it retained it's deliciousity (yes, I know, not a word). So, the night of drinking came to an end, and we ran outside to get to our cars in the downpour, and inadvertently ran into the the guy who took my order and took my payment. He was tanked, which I get. However, I commented to him on how awesome the mac-n-cheese was, and how normally, I'm not a fan of mac-n-cheese. He told me "watch out, the guys about to drive away might run over you as 'they've been drinking'. I thanked him and commented on how it was my first time trying their food, and that I was sad I didnt get to try the smashed potatoes. He said "you got here too late!". I said, "i'm sorry, what do you mean by that?". He's like "we were out, you should get here earlier next time". I thought, ok, I didnt know there was a time limit on the smashed potatoes. Then, I was like ok, but I wasn't trying to be rude, yet I really wanted to try them out, and he just got more evil and rude and it devolved into basically a not-safe-for-yelp argument. Blowfish BBQ is what my BBQ dreams are made of. I've tried it twice and both times had me drooling! The prices are reasonable for the huge portions, guaranteed you will either be super full or taking some to go. The smoky mac & cheese is hands down the best mac & cheese ever! The spicy coleslaw was actually better the first go round, but still super tasty. I have yet to try the potatoes but given the delicious level of everything else I'm sure they're amazing. Spent $18 for brisket and 2 sides. The portions are humongous! The Mac and cheese was okay. Nothing special. My primary complaint is that the brisket portion contained one really nice slice of delicious brisket and the rest was edge fatty pieces. So I got one piece of amazing brisket and a pile of fat. Had the chance to make it over to brew gentleman and Braddock last night. Luckily was able to get a quick beer and then hop in the long line was out the door. I was able to get one of the last few briskets which was great. The brisket had a great spice rub on the outside that really carried the flavor through the rest of the meat great smoke flavor as well. The brisket I could do every night it was not good. The sausage was nothing special it was on just a regular inexpensive bun from the grocery store. The mashed potatoes were a little too garlicky but they gave me about four times what I was expecting portion wise great deal for the money. The mac & cheese however was overcooked and a little mushy. Just not a fan of mac & cheese anymore. Even with the longline they were very nice and tried to serve everyone they could. I'm no BBQ expert, I just know what I like. And I like this place. I catch them pretty often on Saturdays outside Roundabout Brewery (effing excellent beer) and my go-to is the Smoked Brisket Smoked MAC & Cheese. This is rich comfort food that you'll be craving again for hours after. Of the dozen or so times I I've had it, only once had it sat on the smoker long enough to congeal and get too greasy. Normally it's creamy, smoky, meaty and just incredible (do I detect a hint of gruyere?) For the vegetarians, try the smoked Mac without the brisket. It's intensely wonderful either way. I can't imagine you'd be disappointed in anything here. The brisket sandwich is like something Ron Swanson dreamed up... it's brisket, on a bun. Sauces offered (and recommended) but not required. Meat and bun and done. Amazing. Unlike a lot of mobile food offerings in Pittsburgh, there are no frills and no bullshit. Just great food and great people. read more

I had very high expectations for Blowfish BBQ based on aesthetics, because it looks amazing, but it is with some regret that I must give it a two star review. The BBQ is just not good. In fact, it was some of the worst BBQ I have ever had. After waiting for what seems like forever in the freezing cold line at the Brew Gentleman's Food Truck Roundup, I finally received my brisket slider and smoked macaroni and cheese, and boy, did they look heavenly! I squirted a healthy (ha) amount of the regular BBQ sauce onto the slider and went to gobble the meal up. The first thing that was wrong is that the bun that the slider was on was stale. Not just oh, it isn't that fresh, but stale. Yuck! I tossed the bun and dug into the meat, which was just okay. It didn't taste like much at all and was a bit gristly. I was most excited about the macaroni, so I could have forgiven Blowfish if the macaroni was amazing, but it wasn't. It was awful. The worst mac 'n cheese I have ever had. A box of Kraft instant is better. I had my boyfriend taste it to confirm/check my sanity and he could barely swallow it. The "smoky" flavor was not a nice, edible smoke, but tasted like ashes. I could taste nothing except for burnt fireplace ashes. We eat smoked food and have a smoker, so I know the difference between a nice, balanced smoky flavor and "left the food too close to the fire" taste. To end on a positive note, I did enjoy the BBQ sauce. read more

Heard about Blowfish BBQ at a YELP event at D's Hotdogs and then another Yelp event at the Pittsburgh Public Market. Was excited to try a full meal and was able to last Friday evening when the truck was at the Brew Gentlemen (brewery in Braddock). I went with the brisket with mac and cheese, corn bread and cole slaw (they ran out so bummed about that) for $15. It is enough food to save some leftovers for the next day. The mac and cheese was very flavorful (lots of pepper) and cheesy yum! The corn bread which is one of my favorites was super moist and so tasty. The brisket had the perfect smoked flavor and loved trying the different sauces-both mild and hot. My only complaint is that we waited in line for a very long time and they ended up running out of some things towards the end of the night that we missed out on. Nearly a total miss. Only item keeping this from a one star review was the ribs. Good taste, but very salty. The smashed potatoes were too salty to eat and clearly not mixed well as I repeatedly hit pockets of black pepper that almost made me sneeze. The slaw was unremarkable - more spice than taste. Hubs liked his smoked chicken. And the portions...why so humongous? I'm not Henry VIII. There is no need for that much food. Save it and increase your margins.
