It required the commitment of leaving my house at 5 AM to make it to the first stop closest to me, Frostproof by 8 AM. This was the year I finally made it. The sale is always held the first Saturday in November and attracts thousands of people. It takes place from 8Am to 3 PM. The sale is sponsored by Ridge Scenic Highway Corridor, Corridor Management Entity, City of Lake Wales, Frostproof Chamber of Commerce, Lake Wales Woman's Club, Lake of the Hills Community Club, Town of Lake Hamilton, Dundee Methodist Church, and the City of Frostproof. These civic, religious, and non profit groups have been working together since 2007 to promote tourism along the Lake Wales Ridge. While you shop at the sale you can also dine at local restaurants and shop at businesses. While I pretty much stuck to the sale it was hard not to get sidetracked by some of the places I have always wanted to visit. I got to visit a few on this trip in addition to reaching each of the official sale stops. The sale runs along the Lake Wales Ridge and extends 38.7 miles from its intersection with US 27 S of Frostproof to where it intersects with US 17/92 in Haines City. There are five official locations for the sale. These are downtown Frostproof, Lake Wales at the Woman's Club, Lake of the Hills at the Community Clubhouse, Dundee at the Methodist Church, and Lake Hamilton at the Town Hall grounds. In between the official stops are many other unofficial sales. It would be impossible to stop at every sale in one day. Along the route are a number of cultural and historical sites along with lakes, natural areas, citrus groves, and unique Florida attractions. The first stop in Frostproof was the perfect way to start the sale. I loved shopping among the historic buildings of Frostproof. I got coffee with Mr. Chris in a historic train depot and visited the friendly folks at the Chamber of Commerce. I love how this sale introduced me to the beautiful Lake Wales Ridge. There is still so much more I want to explore.

They have lots of carnival food, mini-concerts, fireworks, a 5K run and many gorgeous art pieces from jewelry to photography, pottery to sculptures. They have a golf cart courier service. This was the final stop in Haines City and my first time in the city. Early pioneers planted citrus groves and the town is still associated with citrus today. By the time I made it here the sale was wrapping up at town hall. It was a long day but I am glad got to experience the Scenic Ridge and see so many uniquely Florida places for the first time.

I like that this powwow is next to a flea market. This is the first one of the year on the…read more"unofficial" powwow schedule for Florida and it's held on the 2nd and 3rd weekends of January. We used to go both weekends but now only go the 2nd weekend, just because it works out better for us. This powwow featured dancing, vendors (craft and food), traditional flute music, a cowboy vs indian "battle" on horse back, and a raptor bird show. It also had a show called East meets West where the audience learns the difference between eastern and western tribes. You can also see live buffaloes roaming around in a fenced in area. If you've never been, you should definitely go.

The rib is too cold event out of the smoker. The best is the Swamp Boy. He has the best rib. 2 bone for $5 and sample pull pork cup for $1. The rib is perfect from the smoker. Each piece is the same length. Do you have BBQ spaghetti with pull pork. Don't be surprised. You can get it here. The also good and tangy. Turkey leg, chicken and brisket also sale here. We have the jalapeño pop and the roast corn. The beer station is open air and the live music is playing in the festival. The parking is $5. The some top notch BBQ. Some inject their meat. I have by a Floridian for over 20 years and I have never visited Bok Tower Gardens, despite the…read morefact that my friend and former coworker Bill Murphy wrote about it and visited it in his Fox 13 "On Tank Trip" book. What an amazing place! At 324 feet above sea level, it is the highest point in Florida and anywhere sixty miles away from the coast of the Gulf of Mexico. It is in the middle of the state, and not Disney middle of the state so you have to decide you are going and plan the day. As you make the turn to the attraction, you go through an orange grove, kind of like you are going back in time. While the tower is at the top of the hill, the paved paths make it easy to get up the hill. It would be perfect for anyone with scooters or strollers to get up there as well. What struck me the most was that I have never seen so many butterflies in one place! They were everywhere! The gardens are so beautiful, even in a drought year the plants were blooming beautifully. I would recommend bringing a picnic lunch because it is an amazing place to just chill. Also, the tower has a half hour concert at 1pm and 3pm every day so make sure you time your visit to coincide with one of them. I had such a great afternoon, I want to come back for some of their special events. If you are a plant nerd like me, you cannot sleep on this spot! I am a big botanical gardens person, and this one is special.

We did get a groupon to make it a little more responsible but I was impressed for what it was. The lights are nice and there were different scenes as you drove through. We put on Christmas music and it was nice to just relax and look at some lights. The ride lasted about 20-30 minutes driving through slow. It was slow that night so we could actually enjoy it and not worry about being rushed through. It is also a gravel/dirt road and not the best thing to drive on but we still had a nice time! There is also a kiddie area at the end that had a petting zoo, some games and Santa. There are a few nights when they do magic shows or various others but we did not get there early enough to see it.
