First we wandered the whole way down the street to check if there was an even more inviting cafe (there isn't, so go here!) It is really friendly, clean and has a massive "all day menu." I personally couldn't face burgers, snacks or salads on the menu, so went straight for the breakfast options. Everything is made-to-order, but it is still pretty speedy, and the result was lovely. You don't really need more information. It's not too pricey, and the perfect way to recover on Sunday (or any) morning.

If you are n a dither over what to pick I suggest you try the Society Club. Three pieces of lightly toasted bread filled with bacon, melted cheese and coronation chicken. Glorious! The ladies that work here have always been really friendly. When they changed their menu they kindly volunteered to make me things from the old menu even though it would have been more difficult for them. And North Star really lives up to its name by being a great spot not only to mooch around the shelves but to have a hunk of cake, a great cup of coffee and hone in on some of the most reliable wifi I've had the joy of experiencing. I popped in here with my mum before a quick trip to Khawaja Brothers and Morrison's, and boy were we glad we did. Slabs of amazing homemade cake, incredible salads of puy lentils, Mediterranean veg, sundried tomatoes, big wedges of vegetarian lasagne, giant salmon fishcakes... the choices here are endless. And all served with a warm smile and with the option of kick-ass coffee and Teapigs tea. Yes, they had me at Teapigs tea. And amazing greetings cards, randomly. The decor is really relaxing, the outside space plentiful, and despite being on one of the busies roads in South Manchester and near a petrol station it manages to maintain an ambience of calm. We indulged in the banana and coconut cake and Victoria sponge, and both were mindblowing. The coconut icing on the banana cake should be sold by the spoonful and the Victoria sandwich had fresh strawberries in the buttercream topping and utterly delicious jam in the middle. Oh and the cake dough didn't even harbour a hint of dryness. The prices are reasonable too, and that wifi I mentioned didn't falter once - even while I was outside on the patio. This is one star worthy of handprints in cement. It can even wear sunglasses indoors if it wishes. Basically in my book, it's so cool that it can do no wrong.

But, I imagine its a lovely place to dine outdoors when it warms up a bit. Great comprehensive menu, covering all bases of breakfast, from full English or rather full Didsbury, a large selection of egg based breakfast delights including Eggs Benedict and Eggs Florentine, French Toast, American Toast, Bagels, Porridge and Churros . . . yes Churros! Delicious fried cinnamon dough, rolled in sugar with hot chocolate sauce, wow! As well as serving delicious food, there is also a great selection of olives, cheeses, chutneys, teas and cakes to buy. I could of spent a good hour perusing the shelves and stocking up on all sorts of world cheeses and home made hummus's, but I was so full after my Full Didsbury, that I just bought some roasted garlic and headed for a lie down. I shall return and maybe next time visit the chickens who live in the garden out back.

Though there were no tables available inside, there was room out the front under their large canopy which had bench seating and patio heaters. The friendly waiter promptly gave us the menus and after a quick look I chose to have a pot of Earl Grey tea (obviously), which was a bargain at less than £2. My friends also went for tea and coffee. There was a 20 minute wait for us to get our drinks, with a couple of the staff not catching on at us looking round slightly forlorn and tea-less. When they did arrive though, they were those colourful 'Tea for One' cup and teapot sets which held about 2-3 cups-worth of brew, so they were definitely value for money from a café. Two of us ordered Eggs Benedict and one a Full English. I've had much better eggs I must say - they were overcooked and lacked the runniness you look forward to getting when you cut into them. All in all though the food was fine (the bacon in particular was good), though it wasn't amazing. This probably isn't somewhere to dine if you only want a quick bite to eat on busy days, but you can get a half decent brunch and drink for just less than a tenner.
