Beacon's public library is a great addition to the bustling downtown district! We always make a…read morepoint to visit the local library whenever we travel, and Howland is no exception to many of the wonderful libraries we've visited in the greater New York area! The library is a bit smaller than some of the others (then again, we're spoiled by the vastness of the Mahopac Public Library), but doesn't skimp on book selection and friendliness of the staff. This is also an excellent place to visit with children - their youth section is robust and it always seems like there's some fun programming for kids going on whenever we visit. The Howland Public Library is a definite asset to the Beacon community, and a must-visit to add to your list when you're in town!

The EF library is nice in that they have the newest paperbacks and hardcovers available, programs…read morefor adults & teens, storytime for the kids, and tables for tutoring. However, due to all of the above, its also the loudest library i've ever been to. Trying to sit and read or study is very difficult as the patrons AND the librarians speak at normal tones, often while on the phone or cellphones. The librarians are helpful and the size of the library is cute but the set-up leaves much to be desired as its impossible to find a quiet corner. I'm giving it 3 stars because of all the activities and programs that are available which make it a great community center; otherwise I'd give it 2 stars for its loud, un-library-like atmosphere.

However, wireless speeds are very slow and the library is quite noisy. Better off buying a $2 cup of coffee and going to the Fishkill Starbucks. Edit: Bumped from three to four stars. WiFi speed seems to have improved somewhat (or maybe I'm more inured to the slowness), and I'm kind of used to the noise by now (plus, if BYO headphones and music are good enough for Starbucks, why not here?) [it should be noted that there are some loud day-trader-type assholes at times treating it like their own personal office] Heh, plus they have a Keurig machine where you can buy a cup of coffee/tea/cocoa, a nice touch.

They are also good about informing the public about community offerings. I've discovered so many lovely community groups and events by simply popping into the library. The library itself is good about booking engaging activities and events.

I adore libraries - must be the nerd in me - and I love the Butterfield Library in Cold Spring. The…read moreadorable brick building aside, it is everything I think of when imagining the perfect library: historic, well-preserved interior, complete with (nonfunctional) fireplace; large guilded paintings of the founders, dressed in fine 19th century garb; neatly stacked shelves; graceful tables for sitting and reading; and a friendly staff. The library is small - the literature/fiction section is in front, while most of the historical and non-fiction texts are located in the larger room, which has a stage for presentations. There is also a children's section downstairs, and the library has two computers for browsing the card catalog. I've been able to find books I've wanted here, but just as often end up requesting items through Butterfield's interlibrary loan system (remember, it's a small place). But I don't care where the books come from, really - I just love climbing the front steps, opening the door and entering Library Land. Not chaotic, we-must-queue-up-New-York-Public-Library-land, but Old Fashioned Library Land, where you can gather your books together and linger, because lingering is necessary and encouraged.

Yesterday, I visited the Booth Library to conduct research on an event from Newtown's past. In…read moreseeking out a copy of a specific reference book, I was assisted by Shari Merrill, Head of Adult Services. She went above and beyond the call of duty in helping me to find exactly what I needed and and did it in a cheerful and friendly way. She tracked down the book I wanted, and then scanned maps within it. She next found an additional resource I was unaware of, and made photocopies of its content. As a result, I had an excellent experience at Newtown's beautiful library and came away extremely happy. Fantastic job, Shari!

Lots of interesting nooks and crannies to explore, local historic artifacts, paintings, etc. Also, nice selection of DVD's to borrow, and fun activities for babies and toddlers during the week. If you are local, this is a great place to stop during a walk up Main St. or to bring some books or laptop for study.

Unfortunately, I have recently felt uncomfortable there…read more Whenever I walk in, the same person at the front desk is always complaining to a colleague about another colleague (this is every time I walk in) while still wearing gloves and a mask. It just isn't the most welcome place that it used to be. It's almost like your intruding on their (inappropriate) colleague conversations, instead of the warm welcome I used to get when I entered.

I was blown away by my wonderful experience at the Beekman Library. I went there to sign up for a…read morelibrary card and every staff member was so helpful and pleasant. I was welcomed to town and received a helpful Welcome Bag. I was able to quickly sign up for my card and then I was easily able to use the e-catalog (after a brief tutorial from the staff). The library is clean, well maintained and felt very "community minded". Though the range of books is small anything you are looking for can easily be requested from their library system. Coming from a very large library system where no one ever looked me in the eye much less greeted me by name - this library rocks! As a bonus, they were having a book sale in their basement and it was a great place to pick up a few books I had been looking for while supporting this great community resource. Bravo Beekman Library!

I recently moved to Wappingers Falls and wanted to explore the beautiful old building I had been…read moredriving by for the month. I stopped in and found the friendliest and most helpful staff., Joe shared some of the building's history as well as signed me up for a new library card. The next day I brought my two visiting grandkids so they could appreciate the history. The upstairs staff was also so friendly and shared more of the library's history. I love this community!

I utilized their study room, available for 2 hours on busy days, longer is accepted when no one is waiting. The library is two stories, equipped with beautiful views of lake mahopac. Plenty of seating and computers for use. If you are interested in standardized testing material, they have most all your needs ( GMAT, GRE, SAT)
