Emailed to ask about a particular large canvas that my Blick store on the West coast would get in for me if I agreed to purchase a full box. The general manager, Catherine Fuller responded, but was unwilling to help me. She could have at least offered to check with another location to see if they were in stock there. I have been a Blick customer for over ten years- have used them for my class art kits and my personal supplies. Their customer service was one thing that kept me coming back. Thank you to the staff at Blick's today, who could not have been nicer with my 92-year old mother who has just decided to get back into oil painting. Good advice, concern for her comfort, even offering to bring a chair over to whatever section she chose so she could take her time. I get my drawing class/Art materials here, it's a big store with a lot of supplies. Both workers that have helped me have been very nice and have guided me through the store to get my supplies. Has a lot of parking spots too, it's also the only BLICK store in CT. read more

This place is quaint and has a mom and pop shop feel. The outside of the building is a bit worn down and needs updating. They have classes listed and the staff was helpful and friendly. I'm a face painter and their selection of face paints and stencils left quite a lot to be desired. The only other Blick art Materials store that I have been to was in Schaumburg IL and that one was huge. So when I first pulled up in the parking lot, I wasn't sure if it was open because it looked run down. read more

A truly fabulous art store in the middle of a residential neighborhood! When the big box store art supplies are not cutting it, this is really the place to go, the store is really special. Every art accoutrement you could wish for can be purchased here. My daughter is the artist not myself but honestly there are every brand of paint, marker, pencil, every type, every canvas, etc that you can think of. Selection of pens, notebooks, and anything paper-related leaves much to be desired compared to Jerry's, but if you live in town, it will probably do the trick. I live closer to Jerry's, but took a special trip to Blick because of the (outdated) reviews on Yelp. It was a Sunday afternoon, and there was only one other customer in the store, a nice old lady who was browsing alone. The staff (all in their 20s or 30s, I think) couldn't be less interested in me buying anything there, so I didn't stay long enough to try shopping for my full list. I'm in my 20s, too, and I work in retail-- I get it. But not even a "hi," let alone a lukewarm offer to help me find anything. Three employees just standing around, chatting, not even acknowledging me, despite me being within their sight line for a while. Okay, I thought, maybe they're hungover, or I didn't hear them say hi. But after I checked out later, and kindly said "have a good day" to the two women (after the young man rang me up, and he was at least decently nice), they didn't say anything back, as if I wasn't even there. Once I did ask for help finding something, one of the women walked me over to a section for an alternative of what I was looking for (since they didn't have it), and that was the one positive part of the whole experience. Even so, she didn't seem motivated at all to sell anything. Fine, whatever. To each their own. I get that artists tend to be introverts, and it's hard to hire good people nowadays, anywhere, but wow. I'd be interested to see how they talk to the older customers, since there's a transportation van that stops right outside of the store. Either way, I'm not looking for my hand to be held-- leave me alone to shop for all I care. I'm totally fine with that! But don't ice out customers and make them feel like they're annoying you by being there at all, especially if they're nice to you and low-maintenance. I would have spent more time in there (and, of course, more money) had I felt good about being there. If the vibe isn't even neutral-- just negative and off-putting-- people won't come back. I definitely won't be. TL;DR: The Yelp reviews have it backwards (and they're really outdated)-- Jerry's has great staff, who want to talk art and introduce you to good products, and Blick just doesn't want you to be there. read more

After going to Jerry's Artarama in Hartford for years and tired of putting up with incompetent staff, I tried Dick Blick. I arrived in a bit of a foul mood because of a project deadline . I was dismayed by the young staff behind the counter , thinking that he was too young and would not be able to help me. Boy, was I wrong. He was knowledgeable , helpful & made some suggestions which ended up saving me hours of time. Today was my 5th time back and I continue to be amazed and grateful for such great service. I stopped in to pick up some sketch pencils and a pad, and while browsing the isles I couldn't believe the assortment of things Blicks had to offer. A room completely devoted to sketch pads and canvases is found toward the back of the store. Isles of paints, colored pencils, pens and other items to aid in your projects are stocked full of anything you could possibly need. I think the most important part of this stores success is the awesome staff working at Blicks. I was immediately assisted upon entering the store, and all my questions were answered. Art supplies can be extremely expensive if you don't know what you need. Not everyone needs top of the line stuff, so having someone there to guide you through the ins and outs of Blicks products was so helpful! Huge selection of everything art you could imagine; even if the building is a little like a maze inside, wonderful things await around every turn :) Doing a lot of comics and single illustration work for publication, I'm always needing Prismacolors (both fineliners and markers), paper, pencils, erasers.. and Blick carry _nearly_ everything I need on a regular basis. Plenty of parking space outside, and knowledgeable friendly staff (especially manager Cassie who always has time to make sure customers are getting what they need, as well as organising in store art events), coupled with good prices, and often sale prices too, makes Blick a great destination for art supplies. read more

Love it! They have a nice supply of art everything and is located in what looks like a residential area. Prices are a bit elevated but they seem to have everything you need. Found this shop after searching online for available tie dye kits online. They had 1 in stock (so it said online) and I called ahead to ask if they still had it available. They did have it and in fact had additional kits available too... the girl on the phone was so nice and helpful and put the kits aside for me. I'm more than an hour's drive away and we even laughed at how desperate I was for these tie dye kits ...I've looked everywhere and even ordered off Amazon and the packages keep getting "lost" in the mail... I cannot believe how messed up the USPS is right now. Anyway, we get there and this lil shop had it all! A true art supply store nothing like your typical Michaels. And I've recently gotten into calligraphy and they have all the pens, ink, in every color imaginable!!! They also had the proper practice paper. My whole day was made at Blick's today! A most patient and knowledgeable young salesman, Brian, made my shopping experience easy and so pleasant! I'm just beginning my acrylics studio and Brian's guidance, bolstered by his own experience as a painter, led me to make wise choices in an easel, paints, brushes, etc. He was conscious of the cost:quality ratio in a very personable and professional manner. When I completed my selections, another customer was gleaning information from Brian. The manager, Cassandra Baez, stepped in and helped me. She checked the just arrived order for an item because there were none on the shelf! Above and beyond! We chatted as she carried my easel out to my car, furthering my extremely pleasant experience. Dick Blick carries an amazing amount of art supplies for all ages and levels of experience. Their prices are very reasonable, and I also caught a great sale on several of my items. My completed purchase came with a sweet coupon for a future visit. And there will be future visits! You can order online, but despite the half hour or do drive, I'll go back to the store to benefit from the staff's expert advice and super friendly service. Can be a bit tricky to find exactly what you're looking for, but the staff is knowledgeable and willing to help you find exactly what you need, (only if you ask for help though, they'll let you walk around like a little mouse in a maze just trying to find the cheese unless you ask for assistance). Bad customer service. Do not order large yardage paper. Measured approx 5 ft small. They can't send me the missing amount. They also refuse to send me a roll and let me cut of what I am missing and return the rest. I have one student in class who is missing their paper. The only way to get supply's needed is to order another roll at a discount. Still a $100.00 a roll !! That's bad business Blick. You mess up and now all the extra work and cost is on me. read more

Great selection and friendly, knowledgable staff. On my recent visit, I called with some questions before I went and the employee, Kelly, was very helpful and patient. When visited, the salesperson, Patrick, was very attentive. He spent probably 20 minutes helping explain products and find all the supplies I needed for my project. He even brought out a demo they happened to have of the airbrush gun I was considering. I've never airbrushed before and without his help I would have bought the wrong products for my needs.
