While they didn't have the exact pen I was looking for, the friendly clerk looked up alternatives, walked me over to the pen area, and described the other options they sold. Inside, you find everything you'd expect from an art shop, well organized and clean. What sets this apart is the service. We were asked if we needed help be no fewer than 3 employees. Manhattan y 23rd just west of 7th & 8th. Fighting high winds I hustle to my destination a few blocks away, then stop in my tracks. "Blick? Maybe they have the journal I'm looking for?" I duck into the art supply store, make my way to the back, find two rotating displays of blank notebooks. A purple-haired employee engages me. "Can I help you find something?" "I'm looking for a blank journal..." He joins me near the Rhodia display. "Any size?" "One of these" I grab a larger example, open it. No grid. "I need a grid..." Purple hair hands me one from the neighboring rack. It's a Fabriano, A4 size. "Like this?" "Yes." I open it. It looks like what I need. "Anything besides gray?" "Yellow. Red." "Red is good." He hands it to me. Then I notice the orange. "Actually, I'll take an orange one." He exchanges it for the red. I check the price. Eleven sixty-five. "Anything else?" "No. This is all I needed. Thank you." I head to the register. A smiling young woman offers to ring me up. Her name tag reads "Tara", then "Associate Manager" below. "Will this be all today?" "Yes." "Do you have a Blick card?" "No." "You can save every time you make a purchase..." "I wish I had the time." "It only takes a minute. Next time. That's twelve sixty-eight." I check my watch. I have ten minutes to get to where I'm headed. Fishing my wallet out I decide to pay cash. I hand Tara a twenty and fifty-eight cents. "Did you say fifty-eight or sixty-eight?" "Sixty-eight." She splays the change on the counter. I have a weird combination of nickels and quarters on me. Tara helpfully explains that I need another ten cents. I fork over two more nickels. She takes the paper and the coins, puts them in the register. "Here's your receipt. Thanks for shopping at Blick today!" There's another customer behind me. I squint. Something's missing. My change. I check my wallet. There's a single, a five and some twenties. Tara never gave me my eight bucks back. The register drawer is closed. She looks past me to the guy waiting to pay. "Can I help you?" "Hang on. I don't think I got my change." "Huh?" "I didn't get my eight dollars change." Tara looks confused, then concerned. She opens the register. I check my watch again. Five minutes. "Just a minute." She speaks past me. "Sir, are you paying cash or card?" "Card." Tara turns to her "Associate". "Would you mind helping him?" The man behind me steps to the second register. This is going to take awhile. Tara begins counting the cash in the drawer, writing amounts on a notepad. "Do you not believe me? That you didn't give me my change?" I show her the cash in my wallet. "I don't have three singles." "I'm sorry sir. This is standard procedure." There it is. That phrase. I think of Stanley Milgram's research into abrogation of decision-making to the hierarchy. All is lost once someone invokes "standard procedure" or "I'm just following the rules." It's clear Tara is in such fear of losing her job she's going to make me wait while she counts the entire cash drawer. A few minutes into her accounting I pipe up. "I'm just going to return this." I place the journal on the counter. I'd looked it up on Amazon and it was three dollars cheaper. I notice Blick will match web prices but I don't want to encourage what's happening here. "I still have to count the drawer." "No problem. But I don't want to give you my money." After a few more minutes Tara slaps eight dollars on the counter. I pull out the receipt she handed me earlier, place it on top of the twenty. "It says here I gave you twenty dollars and sixty-eight cents. You owe me sixty-eight cents." Tara hurriedly counts outs the silver, puts it on top of the twenty with a flourish and a clenched teeth "Here ya go!" She steps into the back of the store while I lock eyes with the other "associate" and shake my head. He rolls his eyes. "I'm so sorry about that." "It's OK. I just won't shop here again." "I get it." I love Blick. But! Not this location. I went in looking for some watercolor tubes. The little ones by Winson Newton. And i was on the phone. Just browsing. B/c I never know what I'll need. And my art bud while on the phone reminded me about the white out pen and the mask glue for my work. I went to the counter and asked the white woman behind the counter where that was and she gave me the dirtiest look ever. If it could, my face would peel off. And she turns around and shows me the item. I extended my hand to grab it and place it in my basket and she pulls away from me. And tells me. I'll give it to you when you check out! The customer service in this store is really, really good as they were able to accommodate my needs, especially the associates Madeline and Zach, the two of them were able to help me find exactly what I was looking for. This store has since been purchased by Blick... If you want to go into an art store and immediately feel like a criminal, this is your place. I originally went in to purchase a few prisma color colored pencils and some 2'x4' artist trading cards. The store itself is small and cramped, but easy enough to maneuver through. I was able to immediately spot the colored pencils and moved on to finding the trading cards. I kept seeing a large man in a suit following me and I thought "he's dressed a little odd for an art store.." But kept shopping. I was having trouble finding my cards so I asked an employee, who was super nice, and informed me that they didn't carry them. From the corner of my eye I see the 6 foot man hiding behind and aisle and peeking over watching me speak to the sales rep! The associate helping me was helpful but they have very limited selection in string. Two levels of art materials and the retail space is quite large in the lower level. Went to the 23rd Street store today looking for ONE Derwent Inktense Pencil in Antique White -- a difficult find. I was sure they would have only sets and that they'd tell me to shop on-line like every other retailer does now. But NO, they had exactly what I was looking for at only $2 each (on-line sellers were asking $13.00 EACH, plus shipping). Not only that, when I asked for help finding what I was looking for, they knew exactly what it was and where it was. So rare. Now, the downside... Everything was fine at first, but then I was followed throughout the store by a white employee with long hair, his bangs swept to the side. He pretended to fix things, and was there every time I turned around. Of course he didn't follow any of the white customers, only me and my friends (all of us being tanned and browned skinned). I truly don't understand a store or company that allows its employees to follow others in the store. This is why you don't often see artists of colors. I come to Blick on a very regular basis as it's where I buy all my art supplies. Before moving here, I had only ever shopped Blick online and having a store near by is a dream come true! My only issue with Blick is their lack of calligraphy supplies. Fortunately, I have a store I can go to for that, but it would be so nice if it was all in one place. The reason I'm writing this review is not because of the store itself but the security guard they have. Here is the story... I walked in with my own Moleskine book in my hand. I was going to check if they carry Rotring isograph technical pen, they did't. So I walked around the store and checked out some books, then I left. The security guy came after me outside the store and asked me "Is that your book? Do you have a receipt?" I was really surprised because I have never been asked this kind of question in any other art supplies stores throughout the city. At that moment, I actually didn't know how to answer it. "Yes and I don't have a receipt." He was acting like that we have to talk inside. So I flipped through my book and showed him I've already done few drawings in it. He let me go, without a hint of apology. I don't think I did anything suspicious enough for him to chase after me for a sketchbook I carried in my hand, not even in my bag. And I do feel worried because as an artist, I often carry my sketchbook everywhere. What if I carried a brand new book to this store today? Was I supposed to spend my time explaining that the book is not from their store although it's a brand new book? To be honest, I never ask for a receipt for this kind of purchase. Thank God that he didn't ask to look through my bag. I carried at least 15 Micron pens that were recently purchased in my bag. I really don't know how to prove that they are not stolen from their store... I don't really mind that the security checking my bags in general if they are polite, like in clothing stores. But this guy... just annoyed a hell out of me. read more

The most unfortunate part of the closure of the Pearl art store on Canal Street? You now have very limited choices of where to purchase art supplies. Now, Blick doesn't get low marks from me because of its selection, because it has a wide variety of products and services that are top notch. Blick gets low marks from me because my experiences shopping there are always complicated by being racially profiled whenever I shop there. Today is January 16th, and the nation is celebrating MLK Day. So ironic that today is the day that I decided that I have had enough of being racially profiled and followed around whenever I shop at Blick. Whenever I need art supplies, I dread going to these stores, because like clockwork, I am always followed around by a short, stocky Latino/Hispanic loss prevention associate. It never fails. I often shop there with my mother, who is heavily into arts and crafts, however I dread going there with her because I know that I will be followed around, an object of suspicion. At both stores...the one on 23rd street, and the one on 6th ave...I get profiled. I had decided to skip the store on 6th ave, because I didn't feel like getting followed around, so I walked a few more blocks to the 23rd street store, and lo and behold, that same loss prevention associate was now at this store, and he commenced following and shadowing me as I shopped for a small tube of purple paint to pain the hair on a Psylocke X-Men action figure I had made. Any joy I had felt at finding the color quickly turned into dread. Even something as simple and innocuous as picking up a small tube of purple paint is made complicated by racial profiling, and the tightness I feel in the pit of my stomach when I look over my shoulder, and find the loss prevention guy (who was standing by the door dutifully until I walked in) standing behind me or walking near me, pretending to arrange the shelves. It is very intimidating, but more than that, it is very disheartening because the suspicion of Black people is something that is causing quite a lot of upheaval in our country these days. The idea that if you are a Black person, you are automatically prone to criminality, is an idea that at best, has lead to a lot of uncomfortable experiences for the victims, and at worst has caused many young Black men (and women) to lose their lives. That suspicion causes people to react in wholly negative ways against you, and may even cause them to suspend their better judgement and hastily make a decision that could cost you your sense of well being, or your life. It is the everyday dehumanization that makes even something as mundane as shopping for art supplies, very uncomfortable. Not only was I followed by the short, stocky Latino loss prevention guy, but he also apparently called the front register to warn them about me, which I could actually hear. Why do I mention the ethnicity of this individual, because I want to point out that anti-Blackness, hatred, bigotry, and violence against Black people is not something that only White people do. In fact, much of the profiling I experience while shopping is perpetrated by other people of color (I hate that term, because I believe everyone has color, even if that color is peach or butter creme). And don't get me wrong, I have had some great experiences at the Blick store...from the sales associates. They are always helpful and knowledgeable. It's just the dehumanization I feel when I am ALWAYS followed by that loss prevention dude that makes me leave the store feeling rather dejected, like a balloon when the air slowly leaks out of it. A fun day out with my mother turns into a somber, and sobering experience and silent train ride home. I often wonder what it would be like to be able to move about in society and not have to feel this way. I look at strangers and wonder what it's like to be able to simply be, and simply shop, and do the things that everyone else does. I doubt I will ever know that feeling... One thing I do know, is that I will never again set foot in a Blick art supply store. Sadly, I am at my limit for being followed and essentially dehumanized. I will simply have to rely on Amazon, or another online service to get my supplies. The closing of the Pearl store on Canal street was very devastating for me, mostly because I have had to rely on the Blick store to get my art supplies. But no more. read more

I have no idea why this store has lower reviews than the others. I've never had a problem with this branch and this is my go-to Blick store. The staff is amiable and helpful. Almost too helpful! They're always asking if you need any assistance. The only real complaint I have is that they don't have an in store bathroom. I really hope they get better reviews soon! read more

I was so happy to be able to visit Blick on 23rd street! I had to be in NYC for a doctor appointment which , to my surprise resulted in having to go for some tests. I thought for sure that we wouldn't have the time to visit the store. I was beyond ecstatic that we made it there with time to spare. Since NJ has no art stores (except for Blick which is 2 hours away) I purchase most of my supplies online. I will emphasize "beyond ecstatic" as I entered with a huge smile and greetings! I explained it was my first visit and that I was an online customer. The staff welcomed us with sincerity! I felt that they were just as happy for me as I was for being there! Yeah! They could not have been more helpful. I searched the bottom shelf for at least 5 minutes for GAC 800 and just couldn't find it but as soon as I asked for help, it was put into my hands. The guy actually went to get it for me and put it into my hands, that never happens in Jersey! I lugged three large tubes of paint from home to exchange for a different brand. Same guy again, helped me match the colors and pulled out the paint. Onto watercolor paper in XL size which I have never purchased before by the piece! A different guy this time but the same kindness and go with the flow attitude! I was like a two year old in a candy store! The beautiful Pebeo DYNA paints fascinated me and I wanted to see more! I already have the full line but got a few extras just in case. Another important aspect is that these people knew what they were talking about! That is a very huge PLUS for me! The store was organized and I think held a healthy amount of merchandise for it's size. From being offered a Preferred Customer card to checking out my visit was wonderful. Could they stock more FW Pearlescent inks? Yes, but then I would have spent a lot more money! I was good with my total spent being just over $110 and couldn't believe that the card took it down to just over $60... oh, plus my exchange from an online purchase was a breeze! I will visit other Blick stores in NYC but I will definitely be back to visit this store as well! It was all good! My sincere thanks to all of the employees at this store! I hate to pull the race card but I believe I was profiled because other shoppers in the store who did not look like me were not being as closely watched as I was. STAY AWAY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 2nd review in 5 days about harassment ... went in to see what colors they had for a upcoming project i am doing.. talked to a few workers inside saw that they did not have my colors but did have the size canvas i was looking for... i also saw that they had a very large brush i was looking for so i took a photo of it thinking it was crazy that the brush was so overpriced...deciding i will come back after work and pick everything up and head home... i walk outside and go across the street to hotel Chelsea and i am approached by a very large black man who asks if i was just in the store... i tell him yes and he asks me what i walked out of the store with something in my hand... confused i tell him i purchased nothing... confused he states again that "its just a question what did i walk out with in my hand?" confused i show him my phone wallet and keys is that is the only thing i have ... kind of shocked i should have told him to go fuck himself and not answer any of his questions. I came in with a big list of supplies to buy for a painting class. I'm totally new to painting, so i was a bit daunted from the start. The staff were very helpful and approachable. But the security guard, oh man... I understand that it'd be easy to put $200 worth of oil paints in your pocket and walk out the door, and that a store has to safeguard their wares. But he was circling me like a shark. It's really difficult to concentrate when a big guy in a suit is charging past you every 10-15 seconds. When i say charging past, that's not hyperbole. It was a big angry attention grabbing stride. I ended up leaving with about half of what i needed because they didn't stock a few of the brands/colours i was after, and i didn't feel like sticking around to figure out substitutes. I'd recommend going to the Blick in NoHo instead because if its bigger selection and more relaxed atmosphere. read more

Really want to support local businesses but : Unhelpful staff - frames come with no needed parts to assemble After THREE trips to Blick to try to get frames for art in our nursery, i had to return everything i purchased. Frames ordered online had NO glass or backing. I then went to the store, asked what i needed to mount my art and purchased 4 packages of glass and backing. I was not told there were NO supplies to actually assemble the frames. I then go back to the store AGAIN (same day, same staff... still 39 weeks pregnant) and ask what i need. They tell me it will cost $30+ per frame to assemble (doubling the price) which will take a week or two, or i can purchase a frame gun for $85. I asked if, because of all the trouble i went thru, they could please rush the art assembly (as the baby is due next week, and i was hoping to assemble the art myself that day). They would not help with framing cost, they would not put a courtesy rush on the frames. They blamed me for the miscommunications along the way (I thought my requests were pretty standard "how do i frame this art"...). WONT BE BACK. read more

Even though Blick and Utrecht are affiliated with each other, how come I can't return something I bought from Utrecht here!?! Damn, it sucks! Also, there's no more student discount (10%). It doesn't exist anymore. It died. Instead, you have this preferred card thing which you sign up for free at the register and they try to match the item your buying with the online price of your item. If your item is cheaper online, they'll refer to that price, vice versa. There was this security dude (not the one in the suit, the one I'm talking about wore a grey polo t shirt that read Columbia in tiny letters on the upper left side and I believe he had lots of tattoos...yes I'm an observant person lol), so yeah, this dude was super helpful to me. He really cared about trying to help me find some tricky art supplies, he should really be more than a security guard. This man deserves a promotion. He was so sincere too. I didn't know this dude was a security guard because I already saw one in the store who wore a suit and this particular one wasn't dressed up or anything. Anyway, when I approached him for help, he came to the rescue, climbing on ladders to retrieve some items that weren't on display, running around the store with MY supply list and doing the searching for me, oh and he has a great sense of humor that comes with a lot of patience. Like, he seriously deserves a trophy or something. He was much more helpful than the people who worked there, just saying...man, I should have asked for his name. I decided to be Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz for Halloween. I had been searching for the perfect pair of Dorothy shoes high and low, couldn't find them anywhere! Finally I got this bright idea that I could DIY them, which is exactly what I did. The only problem now was ...where to find red glitter and what kind of glue to use? I'm very new to New York so I had never heard of Blick before and being from the Midwest and habit, I went to Michaels. I walked in and they had NOTHING. I mean the shelves were practically empty and I was looking for someone to assist me and no one was to be found! On top of that the checkout line was beyond ridiculous. So I went back on my phone and searched for other art stores. That's when I came across Blick. From the moment I walked in, I was greeted by security (not in a way that made you feel like they were going to be eyeing you the whole time, it was genuine), I walked downstairs and an associate immediately came to greet me and asked if I needed assistance and when I told her what I needed and what I was looking for she knew exactly where to look and what I should use! My checkout experience was mediocre which is why I'm only giving 4 stars (I work in retail so I know what it means to "seal the deal" with an A1 checkout!)
