I love this church and the Dominican brothers. It is a very special place! The musicians and singers are phenomenal.

I'm a regular here and for a Catholic Church this is the one with the strongest sense of community. Our priests work tirelessly to address our spiritual needs and we have a very strong Young Adult program. The commitment to proper liturgy from the musicians and the servers is "cathedral-class" as I heard put once. For a welcoming environment and authentic Christianity, this is the place to go. I should also mention that this is one of the few places where you see faith being put into action in the service of its community. The Sunday Dinner program draws many people from around the city to its kitchen and you see this every morning as you come into mass. It helps you remember those who go without since other places try to sweep them under the rug. read more

It's a beautiful church with great architectural ceilings and plentiful parking. I also noticed that the kneeling bench is fully padded to help those with knee injuries, making kneeling easier and more comfortable for all. The people here are quite nice and didn't give us dirty looks when we rolled in ten minutes late with a Starbuck cup in our hand. The priest's homily is much more inspiring than other Catholic Churches in the area with no talks of suffering. He does not preach about how God will punish sinners, but about loving one another. Best part, you'll be out of there in under an hour. Although I prefer contemporary mass hymnals, the five pm mass has a traditional soloist with harp and organs and performed beautifully throughout mass. read more

Before discovering Blessed Sacrament Church, I was having trouble finding a parish to belong to in Seattle. During the time of searching, I was single and 27 and beginning to rekindle my faith. The first morning that I stepped into Blessed Sacrament, my eyes started tearing up. I wasn't quite sure why or how to explain it, but I had a sense of peace and assurance that I had found what I was looking for. As I kept coming back week after week, I discovered more and more to love about this parish. One of my favorite things? The liturgical music. I remember thinking at one point "This must be what Heaven sounds like". The choir is THAT GOOD. The architectural interior is beautiful- so stunning, in fact, that I remember calling my parents after my first Mass here and exclaiming "I've found where I want to get married!!!" If you're in your 20s or 30s, I highly recommend checking out the Young Adult group at this parish. The activities vary from hiking retreats to C.S. Lewis book talks to happy hour to dances....one of my favorite events was held monthly, called Saturday Night Alive. It was an opportunity to visit Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament, go to Confession, as well as mingle afterward with the normally large turnout of young adults! I highly recommend visiting/checking out Blessed Sacrament- even if you aren't Catholic! You will be welcomed with open arms. And don't forget those tissues- you might need them once the choir starts! read more

What can I say that hasn't been said. This is such a sacred space. The music at the Masses, the incense, homilies and gracious priests and staff has bolstered my faith. In rare and special occasions like St. Dominic's birthday (this is a Dominican Order parish) on August 8th, a Dominican Rite Mass is featured and it is quite the spiritual and august event. Father Daniel Syverstad, OP delivers a concise and relevant homily. Jesson Mata, the director of liturgy and music has created a choir of incredibly dedicated singers and musicians that rival professional groups. Every month I'm blessed to have the opportunity to read as a lector. It is a humbling experience and feel compelled to invite you to any of the masses during the week to marvel at such a splendid sacred space. read more

My sacramental and prayer life is always fortified every time I attend Mass at Blessed Sacrament Church. The liturgies are refreshingly unpretentious and thankfully void of the usual commonplace nonsense so prevalent of gimmicky or silly side remarks or empty chatter from the priest-celebrant who makes you feel as if you are attending a cheap talk show instead of a singularly valuable and unique hour set aside for real prayerful worship and sacrament. The homilies are intelligently prepared, scripturally insightful and most often employ a rhetoric which engages serious reflection upon the scriptural readings of the day and how they may be interpreted and applied to everyday circumstances. Likewise, the liturgical music is EXCELLENT, well crafted and most appropriate to the day's liturgy. It serves as a reliable vehicle of prayer. The organ is lovely, played skillfully and really supports the congregational singing. The choirs project their refined skills without drawing attention to themselves and exhibit a genuine amount of care in interpretation, intonation and indeed, prayerfulness. Thank you so much for all your work, Matthew and Eric! The lectors proclaim the scripture in a straightforward and respectful manner. All the liturgical ministers, presiders, M.C.'s, organist, singers, lectors and ushers are well coordinated and provide an invaluable service to this parish community. The priests who chant the collects and Eucharistic Prayer set up a dialog with the congregation that is both inviting and authentically beautiful in simplicity. It all appears to be sewn together with care and deep understanding of how Catholics (or perhaps anyone else) can easily be guided toward deeper and authentic prayer. I truly feel drawn to the Real Presence of Christ in the Blessed Sacrament at this aptly named church. I'm proud to live in a city with a parish like Blessed Sacrament. Every time I drive on I-5 and pass it's sentinel tower, I thank God for the ministry of the Dominicans here in Seattle, the good and holy people of this parish, their solid corporate prayer, effective charity and all efforts to keep it all alive. There's also an overwhelming sense of community at Blessed Sacrament where an active and effective commitment to serve the socially disenfranchised, sick, poor and especially the hungry, is paramount and is also a genuinely hospitable extension of the parish liturgical and sacramental life. I am a non regular church going kinda lady, I usually reserve that for holidays and such. So when my boyfriend's family invited me to attend midnight mass for Christmas (which surprisingly, was my first midnight mass) I definitely wanted to attend, no matter how tired I was. We arrived about a half hour before midnight while the choir was singing Christmas songs. The church itself took my breath away when I entered. The high wood covered ceilings, accompanied by the hanging lights was simplistic in the most perfect way. They lit the Christmas tree right before midnight... they had all the lights out, and when that tree was lit, you could hear a collective "ohhhh, ahhhhh" from the crowd. It was gorgeous. The Christmas service itself was good, although a bit long. (it was about 1:45 am when we got home) Why the 4 stars? Because the priest was talking, quite loudly when the services were beginning. (meaning= while the altar etc was being set up before the priest came down the aisle to begin the services he was loudly chatting it up with some people) Seriously? I am not a super religious person by any means, but one would think the PRIEST would have some respect for the sanctity of church. read more

To preface this review, we've not been to church as much or as recently as we should. That said, we still are big fans of Blessed Sacrament. The Church itself is beautiful. Somehow it manages to be elegant and simple at the same time. The Dominican priests are very bright and personable. The homilies are thought provoking and usually well delivered; listening to them is kind of like listening to a college lecture. Blessed Sacrament's services come in a few different styles, so there should be one for every taste, including a mass that caters mostly to young adults. read more

MEMORIES!!!! (5 stars) I'm definately not the best Catholic nor the perfect Catholic but I try to go when I can. In college, I use to pray just to make it through. This was the church I went to when I lived in the U-district. PRAYERS WERE ANSWERED. Beautiful church. Architecture. Music/Choir has a beautiful voice (some churches are off tone, not this one). Neighborhood feeling. Very warm feeling of community. Where do i begin... In college, I use to be stressed out about life and just had no direction (i'm losing focus in class, my xbf cheated on me, will i make enough for rent, etc). I came here after work on some Sundays just to pay my respects, not all Sundays but at least once a month. I had a really tough time during college figuring myself out and this place was my secret place to go. I even came here at night, by myself, after work on Wednesdays. If all doors were locked, I use to sit on the steps/stoops of the church, light a cigarette, and enjoy the silence. Some odd things happened to me here... I just cannot explain. As weird as this sounds, I would get off of work at 9PM and come straight here, by myself (I have no idea why), and then meet my friends up to get ready and go out. Unusual things happened and I'm not sure what to believe but to just think that god's there with me. The white flowers. The lady playing the piano late at night. the sounds of the doors closing all around me. The white water near the playground across the street. When I tell my friends about it they get a little spooked. I think I kind of spook myself. And another odd story, i was at work one day and i worked in the basement of the bookstore. There usually aren't customers walking through when it's not the begining/end of a quarter. Some guy walks through the store and leaves and I was saying to myself "why does that guy look familiar?!?!" after awhile of pondering it came to me... THATS THE ASIAN PRIEST THAT BURRIED MY GRANDMA IN SAN FRANCISCO... what in the world is that priest doing in Seattle, in the basement of the bookstore, where I worked. It was a TRIP. I called my mom to tell her who i think i saw and she straight told me i was dillusional. Nobody believed me. So I rushed to him and asked him about burrying my grandma and he said he remembered and it was his first week living in Seattle and staying at the missionary next to the church. Something about this church is very sentimental to me. It was just a safe place for me when I think I needed it the most. read more

Beautiful church! The architecture, around 100 years old, is always a pleasure for the eyes, but the liturgy and the people are what really make the parish so phenomenal! Their Masses are traditional and reverent, particularly the noon Mass which incorporates more Latin, without being overwhelmingly long or difficult. The music and choir are particularly divine. Then the priests and the parishioners are something special. This is a Dominican parish, so they have a handful of Dominican monks all supporting the parish. You never know for sure who will be serving at the Mass. They're all amazing people, orthodox and strong in the faith without being offputting, legalistic or judgemental. The same could be said for the parishioners as a whole. read more

I started attending Blessed Sacrament church last summer, hoping for a church that balanced old school and new school well. It seems many churches are either uber-traditional (and so I'm intimidated and feel judged) or suuuuper liberal (and have issues like people carrying on whole conversations through the entire Mass) Blessed Sacrament church does a wonderful job balancing reverence and tradition with the Novus Ordo Mass (you get the best of both worlds!). The music used in Mass varies from chant to more modern interpretations of songs, and responses are often in Latin (but easy to follow worship aids are provided and no one looks at you funny for messing up some words) What else is Blessed Sacrament church good at? Welcoming new people! Within one month of attending services, the church hosted an ice cream social for new parishoners and guests. My boyfriend and I strolled over after getting out of Mass, and were made to feel very welcome by parishoners, members of the welcoming comittee, and all of the clergy. The gorgeous exterior and interior of this church are definite bonuses for attending Mass here. The first time I set foot in the building (years before actually attending here regularly, we were just in search of an evening Mass) I think I cried a little. Another bonus are the multiple priests assigned to this church (religious orders ftw!), which not only means many chances to catch Mass in a world where Sundays too often get taken up business, but it also allows a variety of responses to the day's Scripture readings or current events. In the interest of being fair, I'll mention a couple not so great things too. There's only one bathroom (stall? unit? toilet?) per sex, so lines form quickly before and after Mass. I always feel a little awkward avoiding eye contact with the person impatiently waiting whenever I finish doing my business. It's an old building though, so expanding restrooms would only ruin the face of the church. Just learn to hold it or stop drinking liquids a little earlier than the one-hour-before-Mass thing. Another downside is that there doesn't seem to be any sort of coffee and conversation thing following the Mass? Maybe there is and we weren't ever made aware or maybe there just isn't for our typical Mass time since it's in the afternoon? But if any of the Masses have it afterwards, it should be announced at the end of Mass or simply in the bulletin. If there is no coffee and donuts after...someone should start it! It's a great chance to connect with fellow parishoners without standing on the front steps (thus being exposed to the elements) or conversing inside the church proper (and showing disrespect to our Lord) I'd love to see more events in the evening, as many people who worship here seem to be professionals and can be assumed to have 9-5/6 schedules. Surely I'm not the only one who can only make 7pm Adoration or bible studies?? Overall, Blessed Sacrament is a wonderful church and I'm quite happy to attend Mass there at least once a week! read more

My Father started taking me here when I was very young. My first negative experience was when the woman at the time who was in charge of organizing the baptisms denied me this right because she disliked my father. Because of this we had to find another church. thank god for St. James Cathedral on that one! I continued to attend Blessed Sacrament for some years following and never felt very welcomed. There was an incident during a mass a few years ago where a homeless man entered the church during mass. It was raining outside and he just stood in the back of the church very respectfully. The usher and one of the priests walked over to him, they each grabbed him by an arm and led him back out into the rain. After this incident, I did not return for a few years. I found myself in a very vulnerable and precarious situation when I became homeless with my children due to an unfortunate circumstance. I reached out to Blessed Sacrament for any help they could offer me and my children. I was devastated when all they could offer was their parking lot for us to park in and sleep at night. No other resources were offered. My family and I are in a much better position now. But my Father has a very limited income and often chooses to pay for his medications over food so he often depends on the feed-ins. Blesses Sacrament stopped prioritizing the elderly and families with children which means many young drug addicts spend hours waiting in line while they and their friends work in rotation saving their spot, panhandling and buying drugs. Seniors and families with children must wait in the back of the line while everyone else is served. There are many other incidents that I have been unprivileged to observe and I have decided I can no longer associate myself with this Parish. I prefer to be part of an actual Community which strives to help people. I cannot say Blessed Sacrament Church has fulfilled this for me or my family. read more

I have seen this church from the freeway so many times and have always admired it. Today, went in by accident as I was in the UW area and so glad I did. Such a beautiful church with intricate architecture. So quiet and there is a parking lot. It seems like they have a lot of programs for parishioners too. read more

***wowee zowee*** While the architecture is beautiful the personnel leave something to be desired. A man in his mid forties came out and threatened us for being on site. There were several other families enjoying the space but he singled us out for having inline skates on. Nobody was doing anything other than enjoying the afternoon when he aggressively ushered us to our car and threatened to call the police. He refused to answer what his job title was or why we couldn't skate simply stating that it was "private property". Considering the church pays no State or Federal taxes I found myself wondering why he would call the police since they clearly don't pay for their services. Considering the teachings of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ I would have welcomed a more constructive dialogue, but this man was simply rabid. I feel sorry for him and hope that Christ can save his soul and that tomorrow will be a new day that shines upon his face and that he doesn't get jumped by the next group of skaters he treats so disrespectfully. read more

Dominicans in Seattle! Beautiful church with a little bit of attitude (the good snarky kind not the churchy kind.)

Blessed Sacrament is the most wonderful church that I have ever been a part of. We were parishioners while we lived in Seattle. Father Daniel is one of the most wonderful people I have ever had the joy of knowing. He really cares about people, and has some profound things to say. I used to tune out in mass, but I found myself listening to every word he would say.. and then actually thinking about it later! I am not a crazy die hard Catholic either... We eventually got married there- Father Daniel delivered the BEST wedding sermon ever! And I was not forced to pay a huge donation! I actually wanted to give them what I could afford out of the kindness of my own heart so I am not sure what the other reviewer was saying about the demand of a high donation... sure the church needs to cover some costs (they are non-profit dispite what others say), they have to actually pay the staff for their work etc.. but you only have to talk to them and tell them what you can afford to donate. Honesty goes a long way. I did not use the wedding planner service, which was a separate fee from the church, I did not have them do any of the frills like pew bows, and I had a very modest musical ensemble (of which I hired part of their choir and paid them myself). Jesson was wonderful to work with, he is so detail oriented everything was smooth sailing. The church is by no means dirty! This church is something like 100 years old! It is going to have character. On the contrary, it is one of the most beautiful churches in the state. From the old stained glass windows to the steps that lead up to the front doors and the high ceilings and green spire- it is gorgeous! Also - I am really shocked that someone said the homeless people there are disruptive! One of the things that Blessed Sacrament does is give to the poor and help people in need, with their free meals for those in need. So yes, there are homeless people there sometimes, but if they can not find help, guidance and love from a church body of Christians, where can they go? In my years of attending church and various other functions, I have never seen a disruption. Even if there was one, that person just needs help. Since moving out of Seattle, I think of this parish often and really miss it! read more

I just moved to a Seattle suburb but am looking for a church consistent and faithful to the teachings and rubrics of the church. Looking at the ministry and reviews on this church alone tells me that I will be very happy to attend church here even if it's not my parish. I am a third order Carmelite and looking to find a conservative church which I think is a rare bird in Seattle.i appreciate the fact that they dedicate a good amount of time for reconciliation, a sacrament very much needed by all in this day and age! The ministry to the poor is very much an indication of a holy church as well. I also studied in a school run by Dominicans from grade school to graduate school and am sure will be comfortable with the Dominicans who run this church. read more
