Personally I like this Blackwell's, its just as good as the one on Oxford Road attached to the University of Manchester, if not even better.
Of course, the bookshop in its entirety is a dwindling breed because of Amazon, Abebooks and the like. In most cases books are simply much cheaper online.
But whilst Waterstone's keeps going by selling trash to passing by middle-class mums-at-fifty with three-wheel buggies, four by four range rovers and organic health food bars coming out of their ears who can afford not to care about the cost, Blackwell's has kept its quality and lowered its prices.
In certain cases its no more expensive than online. Oxford World classics are often 3 for 2, and at the moment they are buy one get one free. This means that by the time you've paid P&P its actually cheaper than Amazon. Plus there's no denying it, there's still something nice about browsing a bookshop.
The selection is excellent, and if you need an emergency copy of something and can't wait for it to be delivered, there's a good chance they'll have it. They don't have everything though, and as its in Salford there aren't many other benefits of walking down there (except The New Oxford) so ring ahead. read more
