Many of the horses are rescues, and the owner has done a lovely job training them to be wonderful, mild-mannered trail ride horses. There was a 6-year-old child in our group who never once held onto the reins, and she never had a problem because the lead wrangler was leading her horse with a rope. There are wranglers at the front and back of the group as you travel single file down the road with cars driving by periodically. Our wranglers frequently yelled directions (that nobody in the middle of the group could hear), and that aspect really annoyed my daughter. It was not a peaceful ride. I have been to the Waterloo location and was expecting a walk through a beautiful wooded area like it is there, so our route was a disappointment to me as was the slow pace. The web site mentioned both walking and trotting. We were at a slow walk for the entire ride. Since my daughter and I both ride frequently, this was not at all what we were looking for. That being said, this would be perfect for people who have never ridden or for families with small children.

Additionally, on what was supposed to be a relaxing horse ride, she screamed at the cars driving past us multiple times. We were on a secluded dirt road, people were already halfway off the other side of the road driving probably 25mph, there was no need for her irrational reaction. Overall, horrible experience. Go somewhere else.

The Howell nature center absolutely blew my mind! The play place was very well thought out and just…read morephenomenal! There were so many different activities and places for the kids to play imaginatively. From the Burde blind to the stump jump in the massive treehouse with the hidden swings underneath, it is a child's dream playground. I can't wait to keep him back here and discover all the little things. We enjoyed seeing the animal ambassadors, especially Blue the turkey and it was a really good lesson to my kids about not domesticating wild animals. I wish it was easier to see some of the animals and some of them are mislabeled, especially on the side by the playground. Special tip; if you have a library card, the Howell nature center has a free pass with the Michigan activity pass. You can reserve for up to four people in your family. This is an absolutely amazing deal and we had a blast. Additional tip- pack a sack lunch and enjoy the picnic tables up at the steep hill by the fox and the deer. It's very peaceful and scenic and a wonderful place for the kids to run around safely, see the animals, and have a nice picnic lunch in the semi shade.

After a couple of hours of fun in the sun and with the animals, we all sat at one of the picnic tables and brought some snacks and cupcakes. In the middle of singing happy birthday to my 3 YO niece, this lady walks up to us and starts yelling at us and telling us we have to leave and that we can't have "a birthday party". The toddler starts crying. We are never coming back here again, none of us knew we can't sing happy birthday at a petting zoo, none of us knew we can't use a picnic table, there were no signs saying that. Even if she needed to tell us (paying customers) to leave, she could've talked to one of the adults instead of interrupting a child's happy birthday song and making her cry. We live 10 minutes away and we would've come back here if it wasn't for this rude woman. Apparently this is the owner, and she was being rude to her staff throughout the day as well.
