If you don't care about customer service, don't mind the cussing and yelling, don't care if he does things you did not ask for or want, don't mind if he takes longer than he said, are looking to spend large quantities of cash, and don't mind if the quote changes, this place might be okay for you. Otherwise, when you enter blacksmith into Google maps, you'll see several other options in the area. I have a release arm for a fifth wheel that got bent. The website of The Blacksmith Shop says "no metal job too small." So I contacted Rick and sent pictures of the item. He said he could fix it for $100 and that he could fix it while I waited. That sounded great, because then I could watch. So I agreed on the price and made arrangements for the following week. But when I arrived as planned, he said he was busy and that I would have to leave the item. Over the next week he kept saying he would get it done. On one conversation during this week, he said he gets paid $200 / hour and that my job would take over an hour, but that he would still only charge me $100 since that is what he quoted me. After that, however, he said the job would take too long. Maybe he tried to do it and discovered that it was difficult to bend metal, or maybe he just decided the job was too small. In any event, I would have preferred if he had just backed out of the work and told me he changed his mind. I would have returned to retrieve my item and would only have wasted a little time. Instead, and without asking me, Rick ordered a new item online for about $110. If I wanted to order a new item online, I didn't need Rick for that. The reason I wanted the item to be fixed is because there are variations in parts, and a new one might not have the same exact specs. But if I had ordered the item for myself, I would still have had the old one to compare it to or fix. He said to pay $110 for this new item and that he was not going to make any money on it. About ten days later when the item arrived, he said just pay him $120 so that he could make a little money on the deal. When I arrived to pay for the new item, I asked if I could get the old item back. He said no and that he had already given it to the scrap metal dealer. I asked him for the invoice on the new one but all he had was the box it came in. I had $130 cash, but he didn't have change and asked me what I wanted to do. I asked if I could pay with a credit card. But Rick yelled at me and cussed and said he is not taking a credit card for a small job like this. So I said, okay I'll pay $110. Again Rick yelled at me and cussed and asked if I really wanted to quibble over $10. I told him I was not quibbling over $10. I was willing to pay the twice-raised amount he was asking for in cash or by credit card. He just didn't have the change and didn't want to take a credit card like other businesses. I was just not going to pay more when I had already been quoted less, $100 and then $110. Then he complained about all the work he had to do and that he wasn't making any money and that he doesn't like taking these small jobs. At no time did I yell, or cuss, or complain, but I did tell him that I did not ask him to order a new item online. I came to him for his blacksmithing skills, not his online shopping skills. After he finished with his yelling and cussing, he agreed on $110. read more

Rick is the best human ever. I reached out to Rick because I was in a bind. I am a florist and event planner. The company that was supposed to rent us a circle arch fell through a few days before our event. I reached out to a few Blacksmith shops (which are hard to come by), and Rick was the only one who called me back. Rick could have easily said, sorry Carlos, i can't do it. Rick Collins - Let me start by saying what a great "old school" blacksmith, a form of creative artistry we don't often see anymore, and definitely a pride in workmanship, which nowadays is limited in its scope. As an artist, my friend asked if I would prepare a Garden Plaque in-memoriam of her husband who passed away five years ago. So of course I wanted to make it PERFECT for her and to give it to her on her wedding anniversary, which was coming up here shortly. THE PROBLEM, I could not find a Garden Plaque BRACKET and I was not at all satisfied with just sticking it in the ground just any old way. Oh, I'll find it on the internet - everything is on the internet - right? WRONG! The closest resemblance I could find was in THE UNITED KINGDOM - are you kidding me!!! Even if I could manipulate this UK bracket, it wasn't going to be optimum in either esthetics or function, but how long would it take to receive (IF I ever received it at all after paying the $$$'s!) My husband said, "Let's see if a blacksmith would handle such a small job." So, back to the internet... I was fortunate that my first choice was THE BLACKSMITH SHOP and RICK COLLINS. I emailed my question, not expecting really to ever hear back - such a small job for an undoubtedly busy blacksmith shop. Rick emailed right back the very next morning, indicating that they would be glad to take on the task. He asked for a "simple" schematic and said I could email the rendering to him. My husband Jim decided he should drive the rendering over to The Blacksmith Shop, which is located in Orange, CA (mainly because Jim too loves the "old world" trades and was curious to see for himself The Blacksmith Shop.) Rick met with Jim and was cordial, accommodating and generous with his time in speaking with Jim. After reviewing the schematic provided, Rick said he could have the bracket completed in a day or two. Rick was true to his word and the bracket wasn't only done expeditiously, but he greatly improved the strength of the bracket as well as the initial concept. He also painted the bracket white for us to match my friend's home exterior trim as well. With all the effort the plaque art work shall require from me over for the next few weeks, I shall be most proud to add the finishing touch this wonderful, durable bracket, which should last for many years. It seems like a simple thing, but for me to be able to provide a "complete package" for this piece is huge. Rick and his Shop did a GREAT job for me, and one doesn't usually expect such a terrific response in the current lack of personal service environment. I took my ebike rack to Rick to get it straightened out. The rack was bent about 10-15 degrees. It was functional but I didn't like the way it looked. Rick gave me an estimate and said he would have it done in a couple of days. To my surprise he called and said it took him less time so he lowered the price! The rack looks as good as new! I just had metal pegs cut down, a really small job, and he eagerly did this in a very short amount of time. I was so pleased that I returned for another small job. In working with my grandson to fabricate a radio mount for his truck, we used cardboard to shape and size a mock-up. Took it to a shop in Anaheim for them to make the metal mount. No contact or call back was ever received. After 10 days I went to the shop to find the cardboard mock-up still sitting on a steel bench in the shop. I really thank them for not making the mount and not returning my calls as I would not have found the Blacksmith Shop in Orange and Rick Collins. A true Gentleman and Professional Old Time Blacksmith. A fabrication shop in metal art. I no more walked into the shop and was greeted by Rick. I explained to him the radio mount and he took stock metal and went to work. I watched the work of a metal artist working the metal from one machine to another and another.
