Just what you would expect in Cherryville, good comfort food with all your favorites. Burgers, po boys, hot dogs, chicken sandwiches, tenders, BLT and grilled cheese. It's small and the do a lot of take out. A few booths and small tables. It doesn't even have a sign out front cause everyone knows what/where it is. Me and golf guys, Ben, Zack & Jason stopped in after our round of golf at Cherryville Country Club for lunch. Of course being the day before Thanksgiving, there were lots of familiar faces for our crew. I had the grilled chicken sandwich basket, comes with sides and I had the fries. I snagged a few tater tots when Jason wasn't looking and they were tasty. It used to be 'cash only' but they now take credit and debit cards'. It's down home country good and I liked it. read more

I just ate there for the first time and when I tell you guys that was the BEST PLACE I have ever eaten. The salad, amazingg! The burgers, EVEN BETTER. Don't even get me started on the onion rings lordddd. The employees were so friendly and just beyond amazing! If you've been in the restaurant business since 1946, doing pretty much the same thing the entire time, you must be doing it right. While spending a couple of days in Morganton (trying to catch some nice leaf color (there was absolutely none - dirty, faded green and/or brown, ugly, even further West) we took a short side trip to Cherryville (the Y is silent to locals), about a 35 mile drive. The reason for the side trip was that there is different kind of burger here, a local favorite, the Lotta Burger. This burger construction was developed here (the exact origin is, of course, in some dispute) in the 1950's, maybe 1960's, and while the credit for it is fluid, what makes up this burger is not. The Lotta Burger is a cheeseburger, one patty, with tomato and slaw - a very, very creamy slaw - that makes this an exceptional burger, pickles are optional, and I'd leave it that way. It is served up on a small, split sub type roll, like that used by Char-Grill in Raleigh for their 1/4 Hamburger Steak Sandwich - and a bit like Honey's used for their King Bee and Queen Bee Sandwiches. We began by trying to get a Lotta Burger at a local favorite spot, but when the doors were still closed 15 minutes after the posted opening time, we moved on to Black's - damn good call! They were open and ready for business, and perfectly Southern, old school charming! We ordered up a Lotta Burger, traditionally dressed, a couple of Slaw Dogs, and a Pink Lady (Cherry Lemon Sundrop, with cherries aplenty). Both the Lotta Burger and the Hot Dog were excellent, and as stated before, it is the very creamy cole slaw that makes them work - it is every bit the equal of the cole slaw in West Virginia that sets that state's Slaw Dog apart! And the Pink Lady is a must - almost exactly like that served up by the few remaining What-A-Burger joints in the Concord, NC area! Great food, great experience, great Southern hospitality - if I'd been called Honey one more time, or had one more drink refill, I'd be permanently stuck to that booth, and soaking wet! read more

The food was excellent! Especially the Lotta Burger. It was same kind of Lotta Burger that I've eaten at the Shake Shop (which was where my family became hooked on Lotta Burgers! LOL!)! Also they're Lemon/Cherry Sundrops are close! It's a diner type of establishment so it isn't fancy but it's family friendly and the service is excellent and they're restaurant is clean! While working in Cherryville today my stomach was telling me that I was hungry. I likely have driven by Black's Grill hundreds of times over the years but I don't think I've ever noticed this place until today. A parking lot full of cars at noon seemed to indicate that there is more to this place than meets the eye. Getting out of the car, I checked my wallet to see if I had cash because places like this usually don't take credit cards, and I was right in my assumption. I didn't know what the menu would consist of, would it be a meat and three or burgers and fries. Burgers and fries it is. The dining room is rather small so I sat down at a two person booth. I had a Double Lotsa Burger basket with tater tots. A Double Lotsa Burger is four small patties with cheese on a sub roll cut in half. I had slaw and tomato and it was killer. They seem to be known for their slaw and it made the sandwich. The tater tots were just right. The beef was cooked perfectly and was better than the premium priced burgers from Shake Shack or Five Guys. It says on the building that they've been around since 1946. That makes them older than McDonald's, Burger King, and Hardee's If only Ray Kroc had gone to North Carolina instead of California, there might be Black's Grills all over the world. Just moved to NC from California. It's been fun trying all the foods in this region. I had my first "Carolina Burger" at "Black's", WOW....I'm hooked! It wasn't something I would have normally ordered. My husband strongly recommended it...and he was right, it was great. The restaurant is very clean, friendly staff, quick service. I noticed on the way out that they now feature a Philly cheese steak....looks like we'll be back soon for one of those. read more

This place is GROSS. I ordered 3 cheeseburgers to go. The order was wrong! Fries where cold and burger where unseasoned. You would think they are rationing out seasoning the way the food was. Not even salt or pepper! I had to take the burgers apart and recook them because that's how unseasoned they where. If anyone is leaving good reviews they have absolutely had there taste buds burnt off! read more

This is your classic Cherryville type burger. A fresh patty. Cooked to perfection. With slaw and tomato. Pretty simple. I think it is the slaw that makes it so good. Hot dogs are great as well. Skin is crispy, and tender on the inside. Slaw, chili and mustard and it is righteous. Since 1946 and not hard to figure out why. read more

My review is not about the food or any of the woman in there! The man that works in there is the rudest man I've ever seen! One, their supposed to stay open til 7:00 and the first thing he says to us on the phone is we close at 6:30 just bluntly and hateful! If your hours are til 7 you take orders til 7 simple as that! Its bad enough you close rite in the prime dinner time but to say you close earlier just because you hate your job is pathetic! And to be so rude about it makes it worse! Those woman in there at least say it nicely! The food is always good but that man does not need to work with the public! Especially taking orders on the phone! Up until today I would have given Black's Grill a 5-Star rating. During a typical week I dined here 2-3 times a week. It is convenient to my work, they have excellent fresh food, the employees are fantastic. No complaints. Until today. Due to a miscommunication between me & my server the sandwich that I received was not what I thought that I ordered. Was not going to make a big deal out of it & decided to eat the sandwich & let it be over. The server came to the table to apologize for any problem and then the owner rushes over and starts in on me. He informed me that "the menu plainly states how the sandwich is served & if I was not specific enough".....I did not hear anything else just asked for a 'to go' box, paid & left in tears. I was totally embarrassed in public by this owner towering over me intimidating me and informing me it was my fault. No problem. I will never return & this will be difficult to do because I have eaten here for over 50 years and will miss the employees. If you eat here just hope that you do not have contact with the owner. read more

I have been coming here since I was a kid. Now, my dad and I eat here a lot. I cannot remember a time where they have messed up my order, and they have always been very nice and welcoming. My go to order is a poorboy basket with tater tots and a Sundrop. Once, I dropped my to-go order and they made me a new one and refused to take anymore money for it. If you come here, make sure to tip well. They deserve it and are very friendly. My only complaint is that it is quite small and it is hard to eat comfortably with a group of more than 4 people (if you are lucky you can get a 4 people booth and a 2 people booth together for 6 people), but the food is so fantastic that it is worth just getting an order to-go if you cannot find a seat. read more
