Charged $45 to visually inspect a tire for a slow leak. Quoted me $100 for an oil change, NYS inspection (car has 9K miles on it) and new wiper blades. Charges came to $225 when I when I declined quote for other work I inquired about. Tried to sell me a new battery when I didn't need it. Price quote for parts and labor for work I declined was substantially higher than from the dealership itself. Their lifts used to be always be full, you'd see several cars waiting for service and customers in the waiting room. I was the only person there. I guess I know why now. Blacks Auto Service & Sales 137 East Pulteney Street Corning, NY 14830 607 962 6150 The wife and I were on our way to the Corning museum in Upper New York state coming from Toronto on a very humid day when we began having mechanical problems (Temperature gauge was Fluctuating). So we found a garage right across the street from the museum and got in to see them just before close. We brought our vehicle in the next day. Being from another country and afraid of being taken advantage of we went to the museum and left our vehicle with Black's for the day. We went back to the garage just before close and they had finished our vehicle and gave us a very reasonable bill making our day seamless and stress free. BLUF: I would recommend not going to Blacks Auto Service Center; they pressured me to buy services I did not need, told me I needed new parts even though they did not need replacing, and I saved $300 by going to another place. They charged me $45 to take a look at my car when I refused their service. I recently went to Blacks Auto Service Center on 137 E Pulteney St, Corning, NY 14830. I was driving to the Corning Museum of Glass when I noticed some grinding sounds in my rear brakes. I assumed the brake pads were worn down and that was the source of the grinding. Being cautious, I took it to Blacks Auto Service Center to have the breaks looked at, even though I regularly use a mechanic whom I trust back in my hometown. I explained the situation and turned my car in to the shop when they immediately tried to get me to replace both my rear and front brakes and rotors, even though sound was only coming from the rear. I knew my front brake pads were not worn down, so I refused and only allowed them to repair the rear brakes. When I came the next morning to pick up my car, they informed me that they had not performed the repairs yet, and wanted to also replace both rear calipers, bringing the total cost of parts and labor to $625. The lady at the front desk reported that the mechanic had said "The rear brake calipers aren't even touching the break." (Full disclosure: They had called me to get me to agree to the additional repairs the previous night, but I hadn't picked up the phone) This seemed too much to pay for new brake pads to me, so I took the car back with no repairs. They still charged me $45.90 for 1/2 hour labor to look at the car. I drove home (gently and slowly) with bad breaks and took the car to my regular mechanic. As I mentioned, I have found him to be honest with my car repairs. I told him I thought my rear brake pads, rotors and the calipers needed to be replaced. (Even though I suspected the calipers were fine) He took a look at the car and found the calipers were just fine and did not need to be replaced. He said he could wipe them down to clean them and lube them and they would be good to go. He said the front brake pads were fine for another 6 months. He replaced the brake pads and rotors, cleaned and lubed the calipers and put in extra brake fluid for $325.04. Obviously I would not recommend Blacks Auto Service Center, and I would recommend finding another place to go where they will not try to sell you unneeded parts and services. I imagine they thought they could oversell me because I am younger and from out of town. Here is the breakdown of a cost comparison below: My Mechanic: Blacks Auto Service Center: Brake Pads 32.09 48.14 Brake Rotor (2) 98.10 90.38 Hardware Kit 22.20 x Brake Fluid and Cleaner 8.00 x Brake Calibers (2) x 313.00 Labor 135.00 127.50 Total w/ tax and disposal 325.04 625.34 As you can see, I paid more for some parts and for labor, but I ended up saving money because the calipers only needed to be lubed, not replaced.
