So they did my taxes and did them accurately. I'm not so sure that they saved me any money, but they didn't cost me any extra either. The problem came when the IRS did not post my final payment. I received a bill from the IRS saying that I owed them over $2000. I sent the letter and the proof of payment to them and asked them what happened? They told me that I had to call the IRS to find out why they didn't post my payment. I even reverified that they were not going to make that call for me. My taxes are complicated, and I have had a CPA prepare my taxes and electronically file them every year for the past 30 years. Things like this don't happen often, but when they do THE CPA IS THE ONE WHO CALLS THE IRS ON MY BEHALF!! If there were an error on the preparation of the document, then I would have been at a loss to explain it. I ended up waiting on the phone for 4 hours and was able to get it straightened out myself. However, I am now looking for another accounting firm because this is not the level of service I require. At the same time, as I said, they prepared my taxes accurately, so I don't think it's fair to give them just one star. I'm not sure I would recommend them though, just based upon the fact that they aren't going to help you if anything goes wrong. read more

I have used this company for the last three years and it seems like their ability to handle returns in an accurate and timely way has continued to decline. As I am writing this (5/23), I still do not have an accurate tax return to submit and it has been multiple days since they have last communicated with me (After returning their first return attempt on May 19th). Last year, I received my returns on 4/14 for submission which was much closer to the deadline than I would have liked, as I try to provide my tax documents as quickly as possible. This year, we have missed the mark by over a month and counting. Luckily, I do not plan to owe the government money otherwise I would be racking up penalties but the government is also sitting on money that is owed to me and that I would like to get back. I can't say enough good things about Blackbull and this review is entirely overdue. We have exclusively used Blackbull to help with both our personal and corporate taxes since 2016. My husband and I are both full time employees with a Corp for consulting work. Some years we have worked with Tiffany and Mark in person and some years we are exclusively remote in our communications with them but one thing is consistent- their incredible communication, boundless patience, and next-level knowledge of all things related to taxes and the responsibility that comes with being a business owner. I had an absolutely incredible experience working with Mark at BlackBull Accounting in filing my 2018 taxes. At 24, the idea of hiring an accountant seemed ridiculous. "I'm smart," I thought, "I am good at math." But, 2018 was a complicated year for me tax wise and I was in over my head. Originally, I went to H&R Block because a friend in the industry told me it would be my best option cost wise. I paid $100 to have someone spew out numbers and forms and hastily explain to me tax terms that were way over my head. Form 1234B and then date xyz and then form 12345A and if you file as A you will pay B but if you file as C you will pay D but your company will be subject to E and so on... I actually left feeling more confused and stressed than when I had arrived. So, I decided to look elsewhere. Working with an accountant who could explain things in a way that made sense to me was a HUGE priority. Let's be honest..taxes are hard, and no one likes feeling like an idiot when they don't know how to file forms that are pretty easy to screw up. I found BlackBull on Yelp and was impressed by the glowing reviews. For basically the same price, Mark sat down with me for an hour and explained everything SLOWLY, and in terms I understood. I left there with a clear understanding of what my action steps were. When it came time to file my taxes, Mark had another sit down with me and walked me through everything I had to do. While I did have to submit a number of documents, I only had to fill out ONE tax form, which summarized my revenue and expense categories. Fast forward 1 month, and I get an email letting me know my taxes were done! When BlackBull completes your tax prep, they have you go in and Mark sits down with you and goes through everything they did. He explained how much I owed to the federal gov, CA gov, and an extra LLC fee. I was given a binder with a copy of every form they filed for me, along with a folder which contained a cover letter with a summary of my taxes, and 3 sheets of paper with easy to follow instructions on how to pay my separate taxes. One of my favorite things about working with BlackBull is that at the end of each meeting, Mark gave me simple and clear action steps so I knew exactly what I needed to get done. My experience with Blackbull was a nightmare. It's pretty surprising given their high reviews. The experience I had with them was the worse experience I've had with any business. I don't think my tax preparation was overly complicated - RSUs, a couple real estate transactions, and a couple investment properties. But what do I know? I'm not a CPA. Here's a timeline of the email communication between Blackbull and myself that I think describes my experience pretty well. BTW, most of the communication is done through email, which I'm completely fine with, and actually prefer. But as you'll see, there are times when you want to speak with someone directly. March 19th - receive an email that my "file is now in line with the tax prep team" March 30th - receive an email that "Our team is working on your tax return" and has 3 simple questions for me to clarify. I answer the same day. April 5th - receive an email that "Your file is in line for our final review process" April 8th - receive an email that "BlackBull will be proactively filing extensions for ALL returns that have not yet been filed", and that I'm "in a group of about 60-70 clients who we are aiming to complete by the deadline". I'll let you form your own opinions on the number of clients that needed extensions. Apri 15th - receive a preliminary estimate recommending that I make an extension payment close to $200k. Heart sank. Imagine the panic you would experience when you were expecting something in the 10's, not 100's. I email back asking for suggestions for someone who does not have enough funds to cover the extension payments. I also politely offered my cell when I probably should've been more direct. This was all completely new to me, so I was expecting some guidance. The response was "You can make a full or partial payment & it is up to you if you want to go make that payment now or wait until the final numbers are ready. We are trying to help you by giving you a heads-up." Not really helpful and didn't really answer my question, but thanks. April 16th - finally received my tax return. I respond back with a couple questions. April 16th & 17th - To understand how I racked up a $200k bill, I pretty much give myself a tax prep crash course over the entire weekend. I find a $100k error with the RSU proceeds. April 18th - still no response from my previous email, but I had to email about the issue I found and some new questions from my newly-gained knowledge and comparisons from previous tax returns. Email sent out at 9am that morning. Receive an email from Tiffany at 9pm that evening in response to my questions. The response to the $100k error I found was simply "Correct". No apology or anything to show some empathy. The responses to my other questions were very condescending. I practically had to learn how to prepare my own taxes over a weekend, so realize that I may not understand how you came up with some of the numbers. I can see how my questions could come off as insulting, but I just found a rather significant error. I had to question other parts of the return that didn't add up to me. April 29th - receive an email that my tax returns were accepted by the IRS. I had high hopes for Blackbull and thought I found a lifelong firm that could help me with tax preparation and planning. I may be a one-off experience for them, but I still wanted to share my experience with others. read more

Mark Torr told me that the tax preparation would take 3 weeks. Ended up it took 5 weeks and still not done. BlackBull (BB) even told me to pay $6,500 to IRS before May 17, 2021 while IRS mentioned in my account that they owe me money. It seemed like BB didn't even bother to prep the tax and simply just made up an amount so that customer paid IRS first. This same tactic also occured to my friend who used BB's tax service. Ended up my friend didn't really need to make the payment before May 17. BB told me that Mark was on vacation after the tax season and I had to wait till he came back for the final review without a definite date. I then told them that I had another CPA could do my tax return right away. They became panicked and emailed me asking further basic questions regarding the tax preparation which could be found in the tax data questionnaire since the very beginning and now that they claimed my tax return was in final review. So, was my tax return in final review or still being worked on? Two days later came the first tax return BB did. However, they required me to pay up front first before releasing the tax return. So they are holding the records until the preparation fee is paid. (BTW, go figure if it's legal to "holding the records until the preparation fee is paid.") The charges were overrated as they did my tax return completely wrong and included unnecessary forms. They entered wrong home address, wrong last name, wrong filing status, not entering taxable income, making up donation which I didn't have, deducting HSA contribution which I didn't have, not deducting the investment expenses, etc. My friend, who also used BB income tax service, even got her SSN entered wrong by BB. Simply put it re-doing the entire 1040 is required. I even have to quote IRS and CA FTB tax prep instructions to try to get their prep work right. After sending the tax return review comments to Tiffany/BB, Tiffany told me that I had to wait for another week as she had personal issue to deal with. Jun. 15 was few days away for the quarterly payment deadline and they didn't even provide the accurate error-free tax return. I wish Tiffany can directly talk to IRS and ask IRS that she had personal issue to deal with and request for forgiveness. So unprofessional! This clearly shows their working attitudes that customers are not first and who cares about IRS deadlines. Tiffany even blamed me that I did not upload a specific 1099 form while their SmartVault kept sneakily deleting the docs behind the scene which I had reported to their staff a month ago. Did BB look into the issue seriously? And now they blamed their customer! As BB strongly emphasized in their BB Guide that they would not accept any email attachments, Tiffany attached a couple 1099 docs which exposed my spouse's SSN in the email reply and put the highly secure data at risk. So, they don't even respect the customer's sensitive info and their own privacy and security policy! Lots of ping but not much pong during all these ordeals. I reviewed 3 revisions of the tax returns that Tiffany did and still full of errors. After extending several times of deadline for BB to get the tax return done, I decided to terminate their income tax service as they did not take the customer's request professionally and seriously. I was also requesting BlackBull to amend my previous tax returns while my 2020 tax return prep was still on their plate. I'm glad that they never returned my call regarding amending my previous tax returns request. Otherwise another mess and stress! Overall, the tax prep BlackBull did was just dragging way too long that IRS deadline was missed, lots of mistakes, and blaming the client. It just doesn't worth the time and money to have them to do the income tax return. Don't stress yourself out! Hire someone who is more reliable than fancy sugar coated talk-the-talk to do your income tax! BB has no sense of time! I would give BB -5 stars if Yelp allows so. They sent me an email on 4-2-19, which stated, "At this late date, we will be filing extensions on all pending returns in order to provide sufficient time for thorough completion." After the deadline, since it was the first time I ever needed an extension, I tried to reach someone from the office to make sure that they had actually filed the extensions. I was not able to reach anyone in the office for days. A week later, I received a call, in which I was told they had filed both extensions for me. When I had my next meeting with both Mark and Tiffany in preparing my taxes, we had a whole dialogue about how I was not happy that I hadn't received any confirmation from their office that the extensions were filed. In this meeting they never once said that they hadn't filed an extension for me. Don't you think they would have at the very minimum said, we should get your LLC taxes done asap, because we didn't file an extension, and every month that you delay, you get fined more by the IRS. Fast forward months later, when I receive a letter in the mail from the IRS fining me $2,000 plus for not filing an extension for my LLC. Really????? This must have been a mistake. I send an email to Blackbull, and this is the response I receive from Tiffany: "First, during the tax prep process, you did opt out of the Audit Assistance Program. Letters like these, and others, are exactly why we offer that service. At a glance of any letter, it might not be entirely clear what the problem is or how to proceed. This is why we implemented the AAP in the first place. Anyway, the AAP may/may not apply in your specific situation....." Ok, this is absolutely LUDICROUS. They don't file my extension, when they said they would, they tell me they filed it, and then after getting fined by the IRS, they said, we're sorry, but you didn't sign up for the Audit Assistance Program, so basically, we can't help you. This was Blackbull's error.... PERIOD. And not only do they not take responsibility, but they try and say it was my fault, saying I misunderstood their letter, and by justifying what occurred away in their email response. I couldn't believe it. I've already hired a new accountant, and when I told them this story, and showed them what I had in writing, they were aghast. My new accountants assured me that if they made an error, they would rectify the situation. Quite frankly, that's all I ask. I went ahead and followed the directions on the IRS letter, and did get the fine forgiven. (They will forgive you one-time) However, as one never knows what can happen in life, I don't have that anymore. Had I not been forgiven, I promise, I would be in litigation with Blackbull. I've already filled out the paperwork for the Better Business Bureau. I can understand that mistakes happen, but take responsibility.
