While there were definitely some unique and high-quality pieces, many of the items--especially the jewelry--were priced in the hundreds and even into the thousands, which caught me off guard. One thing I really appreciated was how the clothing was organized by size. That made browsing much easier and more efficient, especially if you're on a time crunch. The store also carries furniture and other items, and everything is thoughtfully displayed--the presentation is clean, curated, and visually appealing. That said, it just wasn't what I personally was looking for. I came in hoping to thrift and score budget-friendly finds, so the pricing and overall vibe didn't quite match my expectations. If you're looking for curated, higher-end secondhand pieces, this might be your spot--but if you're hunting for true thrift deals, you may leave a bit disappointed like I did.

All priced at a bargain. They have a nice guy on the premises who will find a way to fit items--in my case, two great end tables--in a small car. Purchases benefit the Humane Society of Sedona and no tax is charged to customers because this is a not-for-profit. I know what you may be thinking, but think closer about it... No matter how exclusive a world-renowned community may be, it may be especially prone to having displaced pets longing for a permanent home I don't know. But I do know that domesticated animals don't think about city, state, manmade borders, they just want to go home. The good citizens of Sedona apparently realize this and donate some really cool clothing and household items here that others, less fortunate, might have no choice but to sell for personal profit.

I went a few weeks ago, and everything has changed. I had a car full of quality things and they didn't even acknowledge that I was bringing stuff in to them. I had to say hello twice before one of the four people standing around would say hi back. There was no place to put my donations, and no one offered to clear any space. They didn't offer to help unload until we were finished emptying the car! No one said thank you. Meanwhile, they had a bunch of stuff outside they were just giving away for free. As a donor, I found that off-putting. I didn't just drive 90 miles for you to give my things away...I wanted to help the animals. It should have said "pay what you wish" or something, to create value. We went inside to shop, and it's like they're trying to make it a designer boutique. The vibe was sterile. They want $35 for t-shirts with their branding on them! Even the prices of the thrift items have skyrocketed. This was the first time I've left without buying anything. As we were leaving, I noticed that my donations still hadn't been addressed. Like at all. Stuff was piled wherever I had been able to squeeze some space, trying not to land it in the free zone, and it was just cooking in the sun. If I'm in town I may stop there to see what's going on in the shop, but I won't donate there again.

I am a big fan of boutiques that contain a variety of items. I felt, overall, the prices ranged from inexpensive to expensive. A small pile of knit head wraps caught my eye in the back of the store. They had different colors with each having embroidery and some sequins/rhinestones. I had my heart set on a gray, knit head wrap with bright turquoise and black embroidery all over it. It was $35 but one of the owners took an extra $5 off. Sold. While I paid for the wrap, the owner and cashier struck up conversation with my daughter and I. They were very friendly but then again, my daughter has a way of charming the pants off of people. Of all the things I purchased on my trip, this purchase at Lola was the one I am most excited about. My guess is that there is some ulterior motive involved which I won't get into here but suffice to say, our experiences with this place were excellent and we found the proprietors extremely engaging and they had an artistic outlook and philosophy which was very refreshing compared to many of the stores in the area which are just selling touristy nick-knacks. I just wish they had a website because I would love to buy some headpieces and other articles of clothing to use for our fashion photography work. J & J Antiques sits at the edge of Cottonwood's Old Town and looks from the outside like a relic from the gold rush era (which it probably is). Inside, it's a seemingly never-ending warren of what can only be called "shops". You know, an antique collective filled with little stalls, each specializing in whatever oddity the vendor sees fit to hunt down and resell. There's everything in here from the booth reselling Scrabble tiles to the guy reselling irons. I walked out of here with 3 unique necklaces for what I thought to be a most reasonable price but that's only because I exercised restraint. In today's disposable culture, these kind of shops are in sharp decline. I might not want all of the stuff on display here but I sure do want to look at it all. Cottonwood's historic district is filled with similar shops but J & J Antiques is the first place I'd send you to. They literally have everything a shop like this should. Great place.

Pliers ranging from $6.99 to $14.95, memory wire, bees wax for $2.99, one-stop loopers, a Bead Smith Tool Set for $59.99. Plus, an exotic assortment of beads. Czech glass beads hung on strings ranging from $3.00 to $8.00. A few other types of beads you'll find here: Chinese crystal, Swarovoski crystal, vintage German glass and miracle beads. Beads of all sizes are arranged in the middle of the floor, in boxed sections, including two-inch beds as well as miniature plastic bags of multicolored seed beads. The store is bright, spacious, well-lit, decorated with imported merchandise. There was a little area where you could sit down and fill the tube up with beads. The sign read: Assorted Glass Bead Mix for $2.50 a tube or .25 cents each. On one section of a brick wall, on the left side of the store, in front of the window and beside the cash register, was handmade jewelry by local artists, mostly earrings, necklaces and sets. Prices of this jewelry ranged from $8.00 to $55.00. If you're not into the beads there are other objects of desire: There is Putumayo world music, with a listening station to sample the CDs, tapestries that are made of 100% cotton, for $22.50, made in India from a company called India Arts, and imported furniture, mostly cabinets, in the back, from $395 to $495. But the real niche product: a gallery of beads you'll never find anywhere else.

Bruce and his brother greeted us and were super helpful and just really great guys. The store is comfortable to look through and they playing and prices were super reasonable! So glad we saw the open sign and turned in. Check em out they have a little bit of everything and something for everyone. You will be happy you stopped.
