Food is wonderful. We've had numerous menu items always great and good service too! Worth the trip to Qualicum.

4.5 stars here easy. an unexpected and delicious meal. found the Black Bird Schnitzel Haus on Google maps during our recent visit to the island and decided to check it out. fun, slightly kitschy German "haus" atmosphere with steins, tapestries, and photos creating the scene. we did not have a reservation on this Saturday night but we were seated at a table on the patio with no delay. even close to the highway the outdoor seating was excellent on a sunny evening. perusing the menu, there were about ten app choices including a tomato salad and a cucumber salad, both served on a bed of lettuce. what caught our eye was the option to have a combination of the two. so that's what we ordered. bright crisp veggies-including some sweet onion-with an herby vinaigrette. delicious. besides the obvious choice of schnitzel, the menu has a few other German style dishes-spaetzles, etc-but surprisingly there are asian style stir fry entrees, all with sweet chili sauce. we chose to try and pick between the 24 (!!!) different styles of schnitzel on offer here. some traditional and some decidedly not. like the Thai Prawns, Apple Blackberry, and Bacon with Maple Cream Sauce. They did all sound mouth watering though. my DW chose to go slightly more traditional with Schnitzel topped with Caramelized Onions and Apples. all the schnitzels come with Red Cabbage, Veggies-green beans on our visit-and choice of German Fried Potatoes or Spaetzle. she chose the potatoes and pronounced them and the whole dish delicious. very particular about her beans, they passed muster, and the potatoes were significantly better than the spaetzle i chose which mo was the only misstep of the meal. combination of onion and apple on top of the thin filet of fried pork is very very tasty. i went more untraditional with my choice of the topping of bacon wrapped scallops and hollandaise sauce covering my pork. having recently ordered bacon wrapped scallops elsewhere and being disappointed, another try was in order. this combo was a flavor revelation. plump scallops wrapped with perfect texture bacon and lemony hollandaise i assume was made in house. i made the decision-a good one-to ask for a small side of extra sauce to accompany the dish. perfect to ensure i had some for the entire meal. it was a wonderful with the schnitzel. can't recommend this dish enough. if you enjoy any of the parts, the whole is outstanding. we look forward to making this a regular stop on our trips to the island, regardless of the distance. do not miss it if you have any interest in German cooking. highly recommended. read more

This place was actually amazing. Would recommend making reservations because it fills up really fast around dinner time. There are over 20 varieties of schnitzel to try here, plus other entrees so theres probably something that will satisfy everyone. The outside of the schnitzel was so crisp, and the spaetzel was the perfect compliment. We got the Reuben and the Jaeger Art and both were delicious. The portions are big too so I had breakfast the next morning. HIGHLY recommend if you're in the Qualicum beach area. read more

We had a lovely meal here during our trip to Vancouver Island. It's a small restaurant with a Bavarian theme. It is very busy so reservations are definitely recommended. There is a small patio for outdoor dining. We shared the tomato salad to start. It was absolutely one of the best salads that I've had. The salad was very simple but just bursting with flavour. It consisted of tiny grape tomatoes, finely chopped onions and a lovely vinaigrette that was slightly sweet. Just delicious. For entrees my husband had the schnitzel with apples and blackberries and I had the schnitzel with peppercorn sauce. We both enjoyed our schnitzels. Me especially. Although my husband enjoyed his schnitzel he said that he would not order that particular schnitzel again as he felt that the blackberries and apples did not go well with the schnitzel. We shared an apple strudel for dessert. It was decent. The portions are very generous. The service was very good. Fast and efficient but we felt well taken care of. Would highly recommend black bird and would return on future trips to the island. read more

We had a great meal here! My husband got the gypsy schnitzel and I got the peppercorn- both were amazing. The schnitzel is so soft you can cut it with a fork, and I appreciated the beans and cabbage that came on the side. We tried both the spaetzle and fried potatoes and I'd say the potatoes are better. Not sure what the other reviews are complaining about. They were perfectly crispy on the outside and soft and buttery on the inside. We also got the apple strudel for dessert which was so warm and delicious, although definitely a bit sticky. Service was friendly and attentive! We got lucky and snagged a table walking in but I'd recommend making a reservation as it seemed to fill up pretty quickly. read more

We were made to feel quite welcome here. Great beer. Our schnitzels were, unify, very greasy. I had to dip my napkin in plate to try to sop up grease. It could have been great. I was expecting a crisp schnitzel and it was almost here, but the oil on plate put me off. read more

The Blackbird Schnitzel Hause is worthy of a 5 Star. We ordered two pick-up Schnitzels. I had a Weiner Art veal Schnitzel. My wife had veal schnitzel with peppercorn sherry cream sauce on the side. The meat was tender and the crust crispy and thin. There was plenty of food on each plate. We selected Spatzel and braised red cabbage as part of the meal price. Outstanding food. Birthday dinner for 4 on a busy Sat evening...had reservations...warm welcome by hostess....table ready...drinks promptly served...menu questions were answered in an easy-going pleasant manner. Delicious cucumber salad appetizers arrived promptly as drinks were refreshed. The main course was different for each. The opinion of three was that everything was nicely done. Schnitzels were just on crisp, temptingly & lightly browned with sauces & additions just right....so tasty. One guest found vegetables over-cooked to his taste... asparagus limp, string beans "rubbery". The red cabbage was to die for while fried potatoes could have cooked to crisp more. Chef had to have been challenged with Sat night crowd. This was a delightful meal in a homey pleasant setting made the nicer by our delightful server. We closed the restaurant reluctantly. 4.5/5 at least. Repeat? YES! One couple will return tonight for a repeat performance read more

Good morning. I would like to comment on the recent increase of the cost of sharing a meal at the Blackbird. It has been from the beginning, a three dollar charge, now increased to seven dollars. Although that is only a four dollar increase it has been problematic for us and we feel, for many others. However, we do agree with the five star rating , with impeccable service and food preparation. We would hope that this change in cost will be reversed as we miss going to this restaurant we have stopped recommending the Blackbird to other patrons. read more

I picked this place to order take-out from, based on positive reviews, and it was conveniently across the street from where we were staying. We were impressed with how fast it took for the food to be ready, and it was hot and tasty. It was so good, that we actually ordered schnitzel two nights in a row! There are so many creative combinations for different kinds of schnitzel and it was nice to eat some different cuisine. Would recommend! read more

Excellent Pork Schnitzel in a intimate German setting. New to Qualicum Beach this year. Food was hot, well presented and timely. Many different varieties of preparation. Spaetzle was delicious. Not very big so if dinner is your meal you better phone ahead. read more

The staff are exceptional and welcoming. We make schnitzel at home, the recipe handed down from our German side of the family. We had dinned at the Blackbird before. I was shocked to see what appeared to be a decline in the quantity and quality of the food. The schnitzel was so small and thin, the beans half cooked. The thinness of the schnitzel was alarmingly so, the breading on the thin side and very bland. Very little salt, no pepper and no paprika or other seasoning would be my guess. The schnitzel smelled heavily of whatever cooking oil it was cooked in. I was very disappointed. This is one of few restaurants we go to here in Qualicum Beach, we drive to Nanaimo to get away from the economy and blandness. read more
