Black Velvet

Black Velvet Cupcakes is the place where dessert dreams have become a reality thanks to the creative founder and owner Orlando. The store is located a few minutes walk from Kings Cross Station and the store is absolutely stunning inside. It truly defines what Black Velvet is all about, it's luxurious and it's a step into an imaginative cupcake heaven. The store offers cup cakes in over 100 flavour and the menu is constantly changing thanks to their need to experiment. The signature flavours include lemon vodka, black velvet, salted caramel. They have unusual flavours on offer too such as bacon, hot dog, salmon among others. I had one of the salted caramel as well as the cookies and cream flavour. They were both fluffy and fresh and made with love. The concept of the store is share the love and trust me you will find that hard to do because you will want to eat all the cupcakes yourself. Black Velvet also offers amazing hot chocolate. It's a must for any connoisseur of fine chocolate. The specialty hot chocolate here is Ivory Coast 40% chocolate and it's truly splendid. It will blow your mind. They offer 5 flavours so will have you coming back to try them again and again. Black Velvet Cupcakes offers hand made candles and luxury chocolates so it's perfect spot to visit if you would like to spoil that someone special. I bought one of the Handmade sit candles that are designed specifically for men. The great thing about the candle is it doubles as a moisturiser. Black Velvet is a master creation that brings something beautiful to Sydney that needs to be seen and celebrated. I recommend a visit and Share the LOVE.

A friend bought me a cupcake from this place as a lovely gesture. And what a tasty surprise! With the perfect amount of sweetness to hit the spot, and not make you overly sick, these cupcakes are sure to put a smile on your face. Additionally, all cupcakes are beautiful, a work of art!

(For my 21st birthday, I ordered a truly magnificent creation - a creamy lemon curd cake with a coconut biscuit base, a layer of fresh pineapple and topped with soft, snowy meringue.) The selection of goodies on offer is reminiscent of classic French treats - teeny tiny coffee éclairs, lemon curd tartlets, chocolate ganache-covered mousse domes. There are also quality pastries like pain au chocolat and escargot, as well as larger cakes. Service inside the shop is always friendly, and when ordering birthday cakes since then the staff have always been happy to accommodate special ingredient requests. Sitting proudly on the apex of Streatfield Road, this is one of the cutest little neighbourhood joints that I relish revealing to fellow pastry fanatics.

Today the weather was perfect, not too hot nor too cold. I did feel sad for the young man behind the register because the moment we walked inside, it was warm and almost steamy. We sat outside where the cool breeze kept us chill, on a quiet little street. The coffees were good and the chocolate croissant was very good. An added plus are the lovely little shops just waiting for adventurers and explorers....like me! Definitely will be back....you should give it a go, too!!! You're welcome!

I love to grab a croissant from here to nibble on while cruising the shops on Oxford Street.

But today I was in a rush and was passing Boulangerie Patisserie, I saw sausage rolls and had an uncontrollable temptation (yes I was THAT hungry). I am relieved to say though that the sausage roll was really very good. It seemed to have been made with some sense of standards, it seemed to have actual discernable meat inside it was tasty and it didn't appear that it might have been sitting there a few days, but instead seemed fresh! It brought back the old sausage roll and tomato sauce memories from my childhood. I might go back for another.

I'm a foodie, NOT a shopper!…read more After walking around Sydney's CBD, we visited the famous Queen Victoria Building, a late 19th-century Romanesque Revival marketplace that is now a shopping mall filled with high-end boutiques and eateries. We crossed George Street to The Strand, where we were in search of the world-famous patisserie, Black Star Pastry. Although I don't use IG or FB, I heard about Black Star Pastry's Strawberry Watermelon Cake while reading an old New York Times article about this Australian patisserie, which declared this signature cake and most-requested cake as "The World's Most Instagrammed Cake." So, I made Black Star Pastry a destination during our pre-cruise stay in Sydney. We followed the directions posted on The Strand's directory to Black Star Pastry and ogled the artistically and attractively decorated cakes while zeroing in on the Strawberry Watermelon cake slices lined up next to the Raspberry Lychee and Mango Yuzu cake slices. Honestly, all of the cake slices looked lusciously delicious, but our taste buds were craving a refreshing slice of Strawberry Watermelon. We selected the cake slice, and the amicable countergirl neatly packaged it and asked if we needed eating utensils. Of course, we needed and wanted eating utensils as we dreamed about digging into the cake at their dining counter right away. My husband rushed me to finish taking photos, and he jabbed his fork into the tender yet juicy cake. Before I knew it, he unassembled the cake slice to reveal a fresh-cut slice of juicy, ripe, and sweet watermelon, light rose-scented cream, tender cake, and was topped with fragrant rose petals and fresh strawberries. He claimed it would be easier to eat because the cake slice was about 3" high and looked like it would've toppled when pierced from top to bottom. Yeah, it was HIS "thing" about eating this cake, I decided to take a bit of the top layer, then a small slice of the watermelon bottom layer together. It truly was refreshing, light, and not overly sugary. The lightness and flavors of this cake seemed like it might have been low-cal, but even if it wasn't, who cares when you're on vacation?!

The interior is clean with white tile floorings and white plywood furnishings as if to humbly let the sweets and the flowers take centre stage. The menu comprises of floral influenced sweets and drinks. I opted for the very instagrammable looking Terrarium, a white chocolate globe filled with passion fruit and finger lime pannacotta, brown butter soil and edible flowers. It's an incredibly delicate dessert that taste as good as it looks. I enjoyed it with a pot of Le Vie En Rose Tea which perfectly complements the dessert. The Summer Rose Pav, with earl grey tea meringue, rose chantily cream, fresh strawberries, freeze dried raspberries, candied orange and lemon balm was vibrant and light. Their brownie was rich with generous amount of walnuts in the brownie. I washed all these down with Watermelon and Earl Grey Ice Tea which was refreshing and as elegant as their cakes. I genuinely enjoyed the whole experience. The space is limited but the wait for the table is worth it. Warning: you will want to eat every cake in here, they're that pretty!
