Rick was great for booking and making some great suggestions. The dealers at our casino night were fantastic...on time, friendly and helpful. Where the event went wrong was the photo booth. It wasn't until after the event when some guests let us know that my husbands name (first and last) were spelled wrong on the photos. So, all of our guests keepsakes from my husbands retirement party have the wrong name on them. I alerted Rick and he said he would get back to me, but I never heard back from him. My recommendation, if you use Black Tie, make sure you check everything or run the risk of being disappointed. read more

I am disappointed that I have to write this review, but wanted to inform all potential clients that you will NOT receive your deposit back (even if a global pandemic cancels your wedding). Rick kept the $270 deposit even though NO services were provided. Essentially, we paid him $270 for e-mail communication. He was not willing to give back even half of the deposit. The right thing to do would have been to pay the client back since again, no services were provided. Additionally, he was also not willing to travel to the new wedding location despite expenses being paid for. If you are looking to hire a DJ, I suggest giving your time and money to someone more understanding. read more

Such a huge shoutout and thank you to Rick. We had hired another DJ through a friend of my parents when that DJ had an emergency three days before the wedding. Rick was given our wedding with no time to spare and pulled it off PERFECTLY. Music was my biggest worry at my wedding because my husband is Argentine and I was looking for the perfect blend of his music and the music I grew up with in the USA. I wanted the music to get all people on the dance floor no matter what country they were from. And with the last minute change, Rick made a point to come to our venue, meet with us, confirm everything we had set with the previous DJ and put our mind at ease. And what a party he threw! Rick was the MC and helped make sure everyone was where they needed to be which is no easy task with my in-laws and my parents. At times it was like herding cats but he did it with a smile. He also handled at least 5 different surprises from a flash mob, to a tango dance, to a Michael Jackson routine. He took all these things and made it work as one big amazing successful party. All of our guests from all over the world came up to us afterwards and mentioned how much fun they had and the dance floor was full the entire night. It was a truly international event! Rick from Black Tie Events was the DJ at our wedding. He also doubled as our lighting professional for our outdoor wedding. He was professional and maintained the perfect atmosphere at our wedding. Rick helped us plan our wedding songs, giving us tips on choosing music for the ceremony and happy hour, as well as the little things like cake cutting and our announcement to the reception. We left the dance music up to him. Since our site was at the historic Rancho Los Cerritos in Long Beach, Rick wanted to make sure there would be enough power to run the lights and his equipment without a hitch, he even went so far as to provide additional equipment at no charge to make sure we had enough power throughout the night. When we met Rick, we knew that we could completely trust him to manage the flow of the evening, ensuring that guests are cued and naturally start moving into the right places. That's another thing...Rick made some great announcements - introducing our wedding party to the reception and other miscellaneous last calls. It was great trusting him to take the information our guests need and making it fun for them to hear. I used Rick, owner of Black Tie Events, for my 60th birthday party. He was the best Master of Ceremonies you could ask for. He went above and beyond what he was required to do, to help my event be a successful event. It was a 60's themed event, and he played all the music from the time, as well as taking requests. He also provided the best photo booth that was a HUGE success with all the guests. We had more fun with that photo booth. The booth was huge, and we piled people in for photos. I received a copy and each guest received a copy. Rick gave me suggestions for games and he moved the party along when there was a lull in activity. There really is nothing he won't do for a customer. I don't usually pay any attention to Yelp reviews, and it's because there is no accountability what so ever on comments made here. One person can get mad about something, and not only try to destroy a company with their review, but ask all their friends to comment as well. And the vendor can not get a review removed no matter how unjust a complaint is. The 3 one-star reviews sound like they were meant for another company. We hired Rick for our wedding after previously attending a wedding that he MC'd for our friends. We did not have a wedding coordinator and didn't contact Rick until our wedding was approximately 2 months away. He found time to meet with us immediately, and devised a timeline of how he would proceed with our somewhat atypical event. We discussed music for our cocktail hour, dinner and dance portion of the evening. We provided him several genres, artists and songs that we would like to hear, and he put together an entire 5 hours worth of music. We are "50 something's", as were most of our attendees. Rick's ability to blend classic music with current hits spanned the generations and had everyone on the dance floor all evening! From toddlers, to teenagers, to twentysomethings, and octogenarians, from our first dance until last call, 90% of our attendees were on the dance floor 90% of the time! Additionally, our event was almost a month ago, and people are still talking about what a great time they had. Overall the performance of his employees was good, but when I called the next day to give feedback that I received from one of the guests, the owner, (Chris) was at best, argumentative and not the least concerned. UNPROFESSIONAL AND DO NOT RECOMMEND!!! Complete waste of our time and now I have to go look for another DJ. Extremely unreliable and always had to call to get information multiple times on the quotes and pricing for their services. What annoyed me the most was Dave (the DJ) always called my Mother regarding matters of the booking and pricing instead of ME, EVEN THOUGH I signed the contact, went to go meet with them. A couple weeks after the contract was signed and deposit sent, they called MY MOTHER AGAIN to tell me they needed to cancel due to double booking. How does someone not know a month before they already had an event? Took many phone calls to get in contact with anyone at Black Tie Events, few days to receive the deposit back and they also included a insulting cheesy flyers in the envelop. read more
