I have stayed in this cottage twice now and it is the perfect place for a little Julian getaway…read more The cottage is adorable and extremely roomy for a one-bedroom dwelling. The living room is very spacious with a TV, coffee table and two pull-out bed sofas. There is a couch that pulls out into a bed as well. The kitchen is fully stocked with dishware, including wine glasses and silverware. There is a full stove, microwave, oven and toaster oven making it a great option if you'd like to cook while staying. The bathroom is stocked with plenty of towels and amenities also. The outdoor area has a big yard and is lovely with all the trees and beauty of Julian. The cottage is located about 5 minutes from Main Street so it's very convenient to all Julian has to offer. All in all, I highly recommend booking this cute and cozy spot!

As it turned out, Cathleen's Country Cottage, just outside of the center of Julian, was just the place. It is a really adorable cottage with a large yard that is totally fenced in. When we arrived, it was decked with a wreath and small Christmas tree, which was really fun for the holiday weekend. I was impressed as to how spacious this 1-bedroom cottage was. There is a large living area with two futons, a decent sized dining area and kitchen. The bedroom is also a good size. The bathroom is tiny, but definitely big enough. I was impressed with the number of blankets, the electric blanket, and cupboards full of towels. I also really liked the deck, which is large, has a tiny portable barbeque, and table so we could eat outside. This area is also fenced in, so my dog could join us safely. The neighborhood is peaceful, and we waved to friendly passers-by while they walked their dogs. There is also an amazing desert overlook nearby. We enjoyed relaxing in the cabin, and walking around the neighborhood so much that we did not even feel the need to go into the village. We spent time cooking holiday meals and roasting marshmallows in the wood-burning stove, as well as running with my dog in the yard. All appliances were included, though you may want to bring any specific cooking utensils, as some have been ruined, and keep in mind that the barbeque is tiny. The area heaters and wood burning stove keep the place plenty warm, even during the winter. You may want to bring your own ipod speakers as well, as the stereo does not have hookups. This is really a wonderful place to stay and I hope to have the opportunity to go back again.

Doors did not lock and not all furniture was unpacked so we had to put it together ourselves. While the view and the birds were spectacular, our hosts were not. We would leave work and things would be moved around when we came back, which was invasive and perplexing since there was no maid service in the four weeks we stayed. On several occasions after working the grave shift in the early morning there would be knocks on our doors and occasionally fire alarms would be set off. One day after days of our doors never locking (both the hallway and sliding glass doors) they decided to do maintenance to finally have the doors properly lock, and lock them when they were done. Well because none of the doors to our rooms locked many of us stopped carrying the keys, and upon arriving to locked doors it was hard to get in contact to be let into our rooms. As much as we appreciated being lodged in this clean facility, we could have done away with the hostility and confiscation of personal property from our rooms.

Dawn and Ed are great communicators, they had cookies ready for us on arrival, and Dawn met us to check us in and give us info. We stayed in the Rose room, which is roomy, has a heater and an old fireplace which they give you wood for. Bathroom/shower has a separate heater, and the room has its own patio, but we found it's much nicer to explore the grounds and sit on one of their many benches and chairs spread throughout the hillside with nice views. There are cows across the street that are friendly, and we went to say hi to them in the mornings and feed them tall grass. And don't forget to step outside the cottage at night to gaze at the Milky way galaxy...you heard me correctly...not just stars, you can see the faint outline of the Milky way because Julian is a Dark Sky community and Ed and Dawn's place is very dark at night...epic! Breakfasts are a delicious two course meal of a fruit dish and main. Added bonus is chatting with Ed and Dawn about Julian history and getting tips on places to go/eat. Ed and Dawn were also accommodating to bring our breakfast to their outdoor patio since my fiancé had some smell sensitivity to the food cooking in the main room (but also, it's kind of nicer to sit outside, but then you miss communing with the other guests) The main breakfast/communal area has a bunch of books and movies you can check out and take to your room, along with microwavable popcorn...we watched Gone with the Wind on VHS with the fire burning at night...such a charming and memorable time! Thanks Dawn and Ed! Our only recommendations would be: 1) for those with allergies, getting some cotton bed sheets rather than microfiber/synthetic material (we asked but they didn't have any at the time) 2) while we loved the charm of the themed rooms, there is just a lot of stuff, i.e. old teddy bears/dolls on shelves, old style window curtains that are more for show rather than necessary since the windows already have blinds, these things just make the room feel crowded and also gather dust. But maybe that's just our minimalist preference? 3) The room is advertised with a Queen bed, but seemed more like a Full (perhaps it's a European Queen?), just seemed on the smaller side. In any event, we'll probably try to book the Apple room next time which has a King size bed (which was already taken during our stay) and has a view into the woods. 4) the couch/futon cushion is detached from the wood frame and has a tendency to slide around, and it's also bigger than the seating area, so you could end up sitting on the cushion but not the frame, thus falling down.

The owners are SO friendly, greeted us with a smile, and showed us around to ensure that we felt right at home. It is tucked away under shady trees, lots of flowers, and near great hiking, a national park, and more. It has a comfy queen bed + futon if you bring kiddos, an adorable kitchenette stocked with coffee, cream, fruit, freshly baked bread and sweets from a local bakery, water, and butter. It has it's own little driveway so even though it is pretty close to the owner's home, you still feel like it is your own place. It has a fenced in patio with a little fountain + blooming lily pads! We saw deer and heard the birds singing from the adorable little back patio, that was fully equipped with a table and two chairs. The best part - we were able to bring our pup with us!!! He LOVED rolling around in the grass and spending time in the fresh air. The town of Julian is fantastic, and was so festive over the 4th of July! There is so much to see and do. We highly suggest the Gold Mine Tour, visiting the wineries, cider tasting, shopping, indulging in delicious pies, and more. Even in the summer there were things to do but we can't wait to come in the Fall when there are way more festivities! We will absolutely be back to this quaint little casita again. As noted in other reviews the rooms are small- my husband and I are NOT small, we managed! The tall bed was comfortable and there was a helpful step placed in the closet so I did not have to resort to a high jump to get in. The bed was comfy. Breakfast was ok- I have a food allergy and staff had to scramble to accommodate it. I didn't think of it when we made the reservations, so that is on me. STAFF WAS AMAZING! Warm, friendly and filled with recommendations on where to eat ( dinner- and of course APPLE PIE!) We all agreed (we were traveling with others) that we would like to come and stay again. When you take into account the afternoon tea and a full breakfast, it's downright budget friendly!

That would probably pay for parking in San Diego hotels. This is a historic building and an interesting attraction in its own right. Breakfast is included and it was terrific. Food is expensive in Julian. A similar breakfast at a local restaurant would be $20. The staff are great. I met several day managers and the night security guy. They are all terrific people. It is really like staying in someone's home rather than a hotel. These is no TV. I think that belongs with the pros. The location is great. Right in the middle of town. Cons: Our room was tiny. Really tiny. Use the drawers and closets for your stuff so you don't trip over it. A side effect of the smallness of the room is that the heater/ac struggles to control the temperature . The design of any heater/ac unit presumes a room volume. The room is so tiny, the heater's built in control parameters are way off. Parking, parking is "street parking" and on a weekend, it's every man for himself. You may have to drag your bags a block or two. ---------------------- So would we stay there again? Absolutely. I would probably spend a bit more and get one of the small number of larger rooms, if available. If you want to relax and read, I cannot think of a better place. One thing I should mention, if you attempt to make reservations on line, there are half a dozen fake web sites imitating the hotel. They are put up by a dodgy travel company. They are really good imitations. I even an experienced computer user could be fooled. It is best just to call them.
