Trust all of the reviews here that reference the extreme rudeness of Monica the owner. My wife called to schedule a ride for our family of four and said the lady on the phone was incredibly rude and impatient with her. That should have been a big enough red flag, but one of my wife's coworkers had recommended the place so we went ahead and booked the ride. The ride and horses were fine, but the owner Monica was salty AF. Initially we thought she was just leaning into this crusty old character like Curly from City Slickers or something. But she was rude to each of us separately at one point or another, and then twisted off on my 14 year old daughter at the end of the ride. She's a weirdo. I get the sense that she really would rather be doing just about anything other than taking families from Dallas on horse rides and that she currently hates her life. We have been on trail rides like this before, have always enjoyed them, and have definitely never experienced anything like this. Riding horses has always left me with a feeling of euphoria. We took our daughter here for her birthday. We booked a two hour ride with a picnic lunch. The staff is wonderful and very helpful. The horses are awesome! i was used to going on rides where the horse are pretty much trained to walk to a destination and pretty much run back home when it was time. These horses actually respond to you and interact with you. We had a great ride and the trails are beautiful; there is a trail ride where you can take the horses into the lake. We will definitely return for more riding. There was only one complaint that the riders before us, got back about 1 hour late, so our ride got pushed back. I overheard that this was a common occurrence. Though I can understand things happen out on the trail and there is a possibility of time falling behind. Also be aware, if you are booking a picnic ride, you have to provide your lunch. They will carry it for you, but you need to bring it. read more

Had an amazing experience our first time riding horses! Our guide was very easy going and friendly. He told us exactly how to use the reins and mount/dismount. We chose this ranch specifically because it was the only place that would allow our 9yr old to ride. They provide helmets for youth and a lead line if you prefer. My favorite part was the views of the water and the fact that the horses are full of personality. We had soo much fun interacting with them. I was intimidated by actually being in control of my horse but he was very responsive to the reins. Great 1 hour ride! I went with my sister and boyfriend. $40 per person, and we went as a group of 10. We had a guide in the front and another in the back. I got a bit unlucky and ended up with a slow, lazy but beautiful house, Snowball. The trail was nice and pretty, but a bit bumpy and I had to work pretty hard to avoid branches and bushes. My horse had to be hurried because he kept getting behind, so he galloped a lot so I had to hold on pretty hard and my butt hurt! Took me a while to keep him from stopping and eating every few minutes, and I'm not sure if I ever got a hold of him. I'd be down to come down here again and ride another house. It was overall very fun and thrilling, and I'd recommend especially for their great service and the views! read more

I booked a ride for myself and some colleagues as a type of fun team building social event. On our way there we receive a call informing us that the ride has been pushed back an hour because the previous riders are still out on the trail. Already this doesn't look very good but then when we arrived things got worse. Monica, the woman in charge there, was a little rude to my colleague when she asked to use the restroom (before we had even started the ride and were still at the farm). Then once we had gotten started, some of our horses started eating grass and she said not to allow them to do that. This was not an easy thing to stop them from doing and she did not provide a lot of direction on how to make them stop. Then she said "My seven year olds can control these horses." I felt this was not a nice statement to make to me and my colleagues, we had clearly told her that we were beginners, and had no riding experience. Overall, I did not have an enjoyable ride. I gave three stars because it is a nice trail and has potential for growth. Perhaps today was a bad day for Monica and her horses, but I am not sure I would recommend it unless you are an experienced rider. read more

Family came in from out of town. Newly moved here, first time horse back riding in Texas. Googled places to go and Black Mustang Ranch came up. We called to make a appointment which is a must. They ranch is well kept with lots of beautiful horses, she fitted us for which horse was best. We asked questions and got answers to everything we asked. The ride was nice with some beautiful scenery spots. The lake was so peaceful and pretty. Our instructor took lots of pictures of our group and sent them to my phone so if you don't get pictures she will get them for you. Horse Back Riding is a must in Texas and Black Mustang Ranch is a perfect place to do it. A great experience even for beginners. The price is very reasonable. read more

During my visit to Texas, my friend and I spent a few hours with Monica and her horses. I loved every second of it. Monica first off is such a bad ass, taking this whole ranch on basically by herself. She has a great sense of humor and sarcasm (which I see may have got people a bit mad in the past but I loved it) while also being informative and serious. Me being a California gal with not much horse experience, I felt with Monica helping I had more confidence and a lot more fun then a expected. With that being said, my horse "cookie" was good to me. A bit sassy, like leaping over the mud and stopping every chance she could to grab some leaves or grass but, she was a good time. I was relaxed and found her actions hilarious and manageable. Monica led us to some beautiful views, the paths are filled with monarch butterflies and a lot of other critters and animals which you sometimes get to see (hogs and piglets, coyotes, bald eagle even) it was amazing. Took my wife out for Mothers day along w/ my 20 year old son and 15 year old daughter. We moved to Texas about 18 months ago and my wife has been dying to go. Booking online was super easy, Monica was incredibly responsive to our request and accommodated the time I wanted. Alan was the one to actually take us out, we had only been 1-2 times before and his instruction beforehand was thorough and valuable and makes you feel in charge of the horse instead of just along for the ride. The location is directly on the horse trails and the scenery is varied and beautiful(woods, open fields, waterfront). We were never rushed and Alan even took the time to point out wildlife all along the way(turtles, deer, roadrunners, etc.) Really good way to recharge the old batteries. read more

We had first scheduled for a ride and the weather turned bad and Monica called us and canceled, I was so glad and greatful she did that. Score points for that, thanks Monica. On our rescheduled day we got to the starting point of the ride. Great people really really nice. Just hello glad to see ya and off we ride. Two hours of nice riding but the only drawback was the heat. Go in the cooler weather unless you have a camelback drinking system or carry water for each rider. Several years ago I did this with my 10 year old son and it was a wonderful experience! Both my son and I were thrilled to be riding mustangs. The trail ride is not the usual one you get with most as we felt like we had gone a real adventure in the Texas wilderness. My son is now 31 but he still remembers the ride and often tells others of his visit to a real Texas mustang ranch! The guides were very friendly and informative. Not recommended for 1st time or inexperienced riders. Unorganized and unfriendly staff does not know how to take care of their customers or tighten saddles. Limited staff couldn't handle unexpected situations and wasn't good with kids. They suggest helmets and are particular about waivers which made me think they've had many issues before. Enjoyable one hour trail ride! We rode in early June before it got too hot out. We were crossing off an item on our wish list to ride horses while we were in Texas. I happened across Black Mustang Ranch while searching the internet. It's got a great location, right next to a park which is where the trail ride takes you through. My children were novice and Ms. Monica took that into consideration when deciding which horse would be ridden by whom. My daughter was not happy with her choice of lazy Snowball, but rather lazy and slow than fast and less manageable. Monica took the lead and our group was followed behind with another guide. During our ride Monica pointed out a coyote and took photos of the group which was a real keepsake for us. My son was in front with Monica and she was a wonderful patient (but firm) teacher. My son loved the experience and wants to do it again here back home as does my daughter with a less stubborn and aloof horse ;) . Thank you Monica! It was a lovely ride! read more

I had contacted Black Mustang Ranch to schedule a trail ride for my 7 year old daughter and myself. I first sent an email to 'Monica' which was never returned. I made a phone call and spoke with Monica directly. She was not very nice. She informed me that their normal trails around the lake were closed due to flooding, yet she said that they had mowed paths throughout their property that people have been using. I informed her that my daughter would be a beginner rider and that I believe that the trails around the property would work fine. My questions about time of day and dates available were answered with disgusted tone on Monica's part. We were given instructions to the Ranch and told to come in the early morning. Prior to our coming, I had left 2 voice messages, both of which were not returned. On the day of our ride, I woke my daughter at 6:00am to get to the ranch nice and early. My daughter dressed in her Western - Pearl Snapped shirt, cowboy boots, jeans and cowboy hat, she was so excited. We traveled from McKinney TX to Pilot Point and when we arrived at the ranch, the gate was closed. I immediately called and spoke with Monica. She was extremely rude. She said that she was having horse camp and would not allow us to come and ride. I reminded her of our conversation, my email, and the voice messages that I had left as well as the instructions that I was given by her. I told her that we had driven all the way from McKinney to provide a trail ride for my daughter. Her immediate response was, "You said all the way from McKinney, Mckinney is only 43 minutes." There was no apology at all. There was no excuse given about why she had given us misguided information. I informed her of my utter disappointment. Her response was, " Well if you want to get her a ride, call Marshall Creek Ranch." End of conversation. I blew up my phone on the sad ride home trying to find something for my very disappointed little one. I will never contact Monica or Black Mustang Ranch again and I will never recommend others to spend their time and energy doing the same. read more

I absolutely love Monica! I have ridden there many times during some of my long stays in Dallas. She takes wonderful care of her horses, all are healthy and happy! I have been on many group and private rides they are safe for beginners. She will also give a more adventurous ride for more experienced riders! Owner isn't really a nice lady. The trail started fine enough but then my mother fell off her horse. She was fine and admits it was her fault, and being an experienced horse rider (not her first fall) she got back on and went on. No harm done, falling off happens to literally everyone who has spent any considerable time riding. Well Monica still decided to make rude comments about my mother's riding. Then I had an issue with my own horse, as his saddle was loose. Like sliding off loose. So I asked Monica if we could pause so I could fix the saddle. She made some stupid remark about if I even knew how to tighten a saddle (I own a horse, thank you) and I dismounted and tightened up the saddle. Then she preceded to get upset by the way I mounted the horse because it wasn't "the right way". And yet this was the way I was taught by my own horse trainer and has been fine for ever other equestrian place I have been too. When Monica discovered that my mother and I were taking riding lessons, she made a nasty remark about our trainer being horrible and that we were "wasting our money." My trainer is a dedicated professional with titles under her belt. She is very successful and very talented. Her training was not the issue here, but coming to this place was. We don't have a lot of trails where I keep my horse, so sometimes my mother and I like to go out to trail riding ranches to enjoy some scenery and support a ranch who does trail rides. But we will never, ever go back to Black Mustang Ranch. I advise anyone looking for a good place to enjoy a trail ride to keep looking. I doubt you will find what you want here. The horses are wonderful and so are the trails, but its simply not enough to put up with the nastiness from the owner. read more

I will start off by saying this is a trail ride for more experienced riders. Which I consider myself, 4 years in as a hunter jumper. I rode an ex race horse at whom was difficult to halt or slow down at times due to his quick and "until I get tired" routine during that four years. On this ride, my friend, Monica, and myself did about 12 miles. I rode a Thoroughbred, the largest of the three, and was placed in the middle during this ride. Any time we would canter I found it difficult to slow this horse down, again he was the largest and in the middle. So I was to the point where I'd stop the horse completely and take a minute before I cantered the horse, leaving space between me and the horse Monica was on. When I gave this horse the time to go, he took off, and got right on Monica's horses ass(arms still sore from trying to stop him) . Stepping on her horse. She then proceeded to cuss me out, call me a PUTA which is BITCH in Spanish. (No, I am not kidding) I paid her $120 and she treated me like shit. Contradicted herself the entire ride. I DO NOT recommend Monica. TO ANYONE. Still looking... :/ read more
