I had previously been here when owned by Donna, and stopped in as part of the yarn tour. First, very low quantities and the selection is obviously dwindled. No more Magpie, Lola's Yarn or Malabrigo. Doubtful they even have sweater quantity on what else they have. Second, their customer service leaves a lot to be desired. Any other LYS I have been to I am always welcomed, asked if I needed help, etc. Not here--I got a "hello, how ya doing" and that was it. I won't be stopping here again. I hadn't knit anything in a year. I was undergoing chemo and lost the desire to knit. I attended a special event hosted by BMYS two weeks ago highlighting La Bien Aimee yarns. It was AMAZING. Aimee from the yarn company and the shop staff were friendly, helpful, kind and fun. There was great patron support and everyone shopping and attending was happy. Danni and her staff have assembled a modern selection of yarn with depth and value. This store and event rekindled my love of knitting. I found a new yarn vendor and bought way too many pretty yarns to enhance my stash. I had an exceptional time. Can't wait to return. It was worth the trip from SC to attend the event and shop. I stopped in today for the first time while I was in town. what a delight! lots of variety, and larger than many other shops I have visited in the past. the only hard part of picking out a skein of sock yarn was choosing from all of the offerings. They offer a "repeat customer" discount program (after your free card has collected enough stamps, you get a gift card), and are quite friendly. There was comfortable seating for my husband to employ while he waited for me to check out all of the choices. I will definitely be back! read more

I was visiting from out of town and decided to stop in the shop. The store is clearly organized and labeled by yarn weight making is easy to find specific yarn. They have a particularly great selection of Spincycle Yarn and tools/notions. One of the things that I thought was particularly great about the shop was that they have finished project examples with the pattern name/designer (so you can find it online/Ravelry) around the shop along with some kits. I haven't knitted in awhile and I ended up picking up some yarn and circular needles to make one of the projects that they had displayed. Overall, a great yarn shop! read more

This is my favourite yarn shop. It is absolutely beautiful inside and has the greatest selection. It's definitely all high end but has all the best yarn brands. I spent a lot in here because there was just so much that I loved. I appreciated that the owners were very safe with the current covid situation and require sanitizing hands and wearing a mask. They had some gorgeous sample knots up too. I would live in this store if I could. The area it's in in gorgeous too. The owners are also very friendly and helpful too. read more

I would recommend against ordering anything online from this company. In November, I saw a post on the company's Instagram advertising a product and saying to click the site in the Instagram bio to order. This seemed like a great Christmas gift for my mom, who is a fan of the shop. It cost almost $10 for shipping, but since I do not live in the area and my mom really wanted the product, I ordered anyways. The product did not arrive. It was marked as delivered by USPS. I waited a few days and then emailed Black Mountain Yarn Shop. After a few days, I received an email and a call from the owners. The call included an owner who was very frustrated with me and asked if I had thought to look in other areas it could have been delivered. I am not sure what happened, I have not had issues with deliveries before. But when I pay almost $10 shipping, I expect the company to do their part to work with the shipping company. The owners put in a case with USPS. Christmas came and went and I was not given a replacement product or even an apology. Black Mountain Yarn posted an Instagram after Christmas advertising people buy from their site. I left a comment about my experience ordering and not ever receiving the product. The comment was deleted, I was blocked from the Instagram, and I received a direct message on Instagram from the owner telling me the following: "As you know, according to USPS tracking your package was delivered "In/At Mailbox" which means we did ship your purchase to you and if you did not receive it, something happened to it at your end. " She also said: "My hope is the next time you decide to post something on social media that is harmful to someone, you will examine your conscience about your post knowing you are not telling all of the facts." Ouch. Some customer service. Today I received an email from the owner clarifying the case is closed and I will not be refunded. I figured this would be a simple apology or replacement of the product. Yarn shops are getting harder and harder to come by these days, so it's great to see one so close to my family down in Black Mountain. This shop (unlike others I've been to) is very community driven, and you'll find a decent selection of local yarns, accessories, and tools from the Western NC/Carolina community. I've been to two other yarn shops in this region, and this one has a larger selection of "accessible" yarns as well as the FIRST in the area to get some of the designer brands. Getting back to the community-involvement. I stopped in for one sit and stitch and loved it. Everyone knows everyone, though my family down there isn't as recognizable, lol. It's a great place to learn about the area, as well as some local history or just getting your feet wet in the Carolina Mountains. I can't wait to get back on the East Coast, specifically Black Mountain. The sense of "home" in that area, and with the yarn community there, makes me miss it so much! read more

Incredible customer service! I ordered a couple of skeins of yarn and received it in just a couple of days. When I opened the package, I realized it was the correct color, but incorrect weight of yarn. I sent the store an email, and immediately received a message back with an apology for the error, and a promise that they will send the correct yarn and a free return label for the incorrect fiber. I got the return label, and my corrected order should be here tomorrow! Black Mountain's customer service is TOP NOTCH, and I would absolutely recommend this business to all my friends! read more

I then asked her when she might have some yarn for this cause and she then told me it was none of my business and she owed me nothing and that why should she donate yarn. Sure, if you go in and spend your money they might act like human beings but not in this case. I have met some real losers in my lifetime but this one needs a good therapist, some Xanax AND meditation with lots of Yoga. Go elsewhere as this bitch hates animals and most important hates herself. What ashame. Talk about TRUE COLORS. Just to add, Earth Guild, NC Home and Craft, Lions Brand Yarn, Jimmy Bean Yarn, Huntingdon yarn company in Philly and more gave with their hearts with no hesitation and keep in touch. This place is extremely friendly. The staff is super helpful. My mom loves this shop and insisted on coming here a couple times in our brief stay in ashville. I would stop in on my way to the dripolater coffee shop just up the road to see how she was doing and I was instantly greeted with smiles from not only the staff but also the customers who were relaxing at a table working on projects. It seemed like everyone knew everyone. Friendliness is definitely contagious. Yarn isn't really my thing but this place was awesome with projects of all kinds and if help was needed it was there for you. I even overheard the one worker encourage someone to come back simply to just work on her project with them. Definitely a place to revisit. read more

This is a fabulous yarn store and the rest of the town is darling as well. It is a quick trip from Asheville. I was immediately greeted and felt at home despite being a rather newish knitter. I wanted some local "from the area" yarns and they had many options. The staff/owner could not have been more helpful! I even asked for some color help and they were great about that as well. I could have spent much longer in the store but my husband was waiting. They provided a lunch recommendation which was equally as lovely. We wished we would have known about the town earlier in our stay we could have easily spent the day there. This yarn shop is outstanding. It's spacious, with comfortable chairs if you're inclined to stay for a while. Yarn is organized effectively, with inspirational shop samples strategically distributed around the shop. They stock a nice range of yarn, and lots of colorways, at fair prices. They also have a section of needles and notions - maybe not as extensive as the yarn, but certainly sufficient. The staff are there to help you, but happy to leave you to browse if that's your preference. read more

This is my favorite yarn shop! Good thing it's not too close by or I'd be broke! The staff is nice and friendly and so helpful. I was admiring some yarn that was very pricey and the staff showed me an alternative that was much closer to my budget. They have a great selection of yarn and so many samples. I live in Charlotte, NC but I try to make it in to this shop a few times a year, once even driving about 45 minutes out of my way to get there! The owner even remembered my name the last time I was there, which is pretty incredible considering I'm not local. Can't wait to go back next time I'm nearby! read more
