I very rarely give 5 star reviews but this one was definitely well earned. I saw a Groupon for this place and decided to take my son zip lining for a guys weekend away. The weather was great which helps but when we got there all of the equipment was clean, in good shape, and ready to go. We were given instructions and went through a practice line to prepare for the real ones. Safety was a top priority and we were told what to expect. Our guides were super awesome and fun and we had a good group that went up with us. Everybody was friendly and prepared to help each other if needed. There were 10 lines that varied in length and decline and we really got going fast on a few of them. Jr. & I had a blast and will definitely head back at some point despite the long drive, it was that worth it! read more

WOW! what an amazing experience. So many things we could talk about but let's start with the basics.... Our tour guide was incredible and I believe if we didn't have him, the experience wouldn't have been as great. We toured with 3 other couples, and he would stop and check on us when we go through a rough patch. He took us to some pretty amazing sightseeing areas for breathtaking views. you can choose from the 2,4 and 6 hour tour, and I highly recommend going for the 6. We initially purchased the 2 but had so much fun we ended up doing the 6. It was completely worth it because the 2 hour was standard but as we went longer, the trails were getting more difficult in the best way possible. Hands down, an amazing day. Harlan has made a name for itself in many different ways, whether it's because of the show Justified, the documentary Bloody Harlan, the ATV park, Black Bears, etc. However, Harlan will be known for it's exhilarating and thrilling zip lines! With the highest peaks in Kentucky, Black Mountain Thunder Zipline is the highest, longest, and fastest Zipline in Kentucky. The guides are extremely knowledgeable and personable. You can tell the folks who operate this park and it's employees are passionate about what they do. You'll begin your trip checking it at the bottom of the mountain, where they'll outfit you with your gear and teach you different hand signals for your safety. They'll then shuttle you to the top of the zip lines and off you go! The sights are unbelievable during the fall, which is the first time I zipped. I also went during the summer and spring but fall was excellent with the brilliant golds, oranges, browns, reds, and yellows peppering the mountainside. We stopped through here on a road trip to the Carolinas, and the Black Mountain Thunder zip line did not disappoint. I have almost no experience ziplining, and the guides were very helpful and made it feel safe and fun. There are 11 ziplines on the course, many with breathtaking, panoramic views above the treeline. Awesome way to see Appalachia from the tree tops - zipping through the air. The price was very reasonable. I hope we can go back again. read more

Visited Black Mountain Thunder Ziplines on Sunday, September 3, 2017 with my girlfriend. This operation uses a leather glove self braking system. This I have found via research, is kind of an antiquated system as most all other operations have safer braking mechanisms in place. One question we had prior to beginning was what if we don't stop in time with our glove break at the end of the run? The reply from the "catcher" staff person was, "I will stop you." On line 4 my girlfriend lost her grip on the zip line, turned backward mid-course and due to no safety mechanism except depending on the skill of the staff person to stop you in that event, WHICH HE DIDN'T!...She slammed back first into the tree at the end of the platform. Fortunate that this was a short zip line and her speed wasn't any greater than it was as she slammed full force into that tree at top, non-braked speed. Incredibly she had to ride one more line to get to a emergency pick-up spot. We didn't know the extent of injury, could've had a spinal injury at worst, internal organ damage, broken tailbone etc. She was in pain. We were taken off the mountain in an ATV by another staff person. No injury report filed. Guess they don't need to when the injured customer has pre-signed a waiver. No instruction towards nearby medical care given by staff. I know, we could've asked. Just kind of in a mild shock I think. We were 3 1/2 hours from home and not familiar with the area. Cell phones had no signal anywhere. Found a small hospital in Hyden. 2 cat scans and five hours later she was released with a very lucky diagnosis of lower back contusions. Could've been much worse. Line 6, 7 or 8 (longer, faster lines) she would have most likely been paralyzed or dead. If attending this business, I highly recommend that you have good hand eye coordination and the self ability, and confidence in your ability to use the self-dependent braking system employed by Black Mountain Thunder. Do not depend on staff to be able to stop you at the end of a run if something goes wrong. This review is not intended to slam this business. It is to make the customer aware of the real risks involved with this activity. Do not partake if you are worried prior about this activity. If after a couple of lines and you feel apprehensive or unsure in anyway drop out. No shame in that.
