Not cool! Even when some of us said our phones were inside the car way out in the parking lot, they said, "go get them if you all want your pictures!" We were extremely tired, hungry, and muddy and just wanted to leave, but had to trek to our cars to retrieve our phones to write damn Yelp reviews on the spot. When we started the trip, the owner said, "Don't worry about getting your cameras dirty. We will get pictures for you and give them to you afterwards. Then we finish the trip and they put a ransom on our pictures, knowing that we relied on their word. Extremely unethical and unprofessional. Speaking of muddy, MAKE SURE to bring your own rain ponchos (or even a trash bag with a hole cut out for your head) because ponchos will NOT be furnished by the owners unless you pay an overpriced premium for them: $10 each for the same paper thin poncho that you'd get at the drugstore for 99 cents! How disgraceful. We declined and spent 2 days cleaning all of the mud off our shoes and clothes.

Nevertheless the road into the parking lot is safe and easily passable by typical cars SUVs cans or trucks with either two or four wheel drive. There are no rest rooms or food so you must bring your own food and water. The path is firm and slopes upward gently becoming rocky with prominent tree roots. The 65 foot high big falls is spectacular. It is not a straight fall down. Many deaths have occurred as visitors attempt to dive from the top of the falls. Elk falls ranks in the top 3 waterfall related deaths. The rocks surrounding the first pool are beautiful but have a slippery surface. This park recently reopened after extensive restoration following Hurricane Helene. On the first day it opened there was a fatality of a falls jumper. Despite these challenges this park is a great example of the outdoors in nearly natural and breathtaking state.

The falls are closed as of late April 2026. Road is blocked about 2 miles out from town.read more

We ate lunch at the nearby Twisted Laurel, which was excellent. Things to know: Parking is not free. There are a couple of metered spaces nearby and there's a pay to park lot across the street. There are no bathrooms or changing rooms close by (that I could see). On their website it says there is a public bathroom, but I couldn't find it. There isn't a lot of shade except under the trees and on the amphitheater stage. These are really too far away to keep a good eye on a small child. Bring your sunscreen! There are no benches nearby to sit on, but there are concrete blocks so bring a towel for parents to sit on. It's a public fountain, so we were glad to have our water shoes. The fountain is advertised to have a lot of features and lights, but we didn't see any of that while we were there. The water shoots up out of the ground and doesn't change. That's enough for my preK kid, but might get boring for older ones. We brought some water toys and those were a big hit. While we were there a summer camp or daycare came through with 50 kids who were well-behaved, but they took over the amphitheater area and most of the fountain. We ended up leaving because it was just too crowded.

We managed to snag the top loft around the Holiday season. To top it off, this place is pet-friendly, no questions asked and no pet deposit. This is an incredible perk for families traveling with their fur babies. Because they recognized that pets are family too, we took extra care to clean up after our pets on the property when they did their business outdoors. Not sure if they care about dog poop on the land, but may we suggest a small station for doggie poop bags? Also something to consider, we frequently saw loose dogs from the surrounding area running on the property and road, so we recommend being aware of this if your pet doesn't do well around loose dogs. Our cabin was approximately 600 square feet, had a gas fireplace (awesome!!!!!!), and we were right on the edge of the Watauga River. The land surrounding the cabin is lovely and the sound of the rushing river water is absolutely refreshing. The cabin comes with everything you would need for your stay: extra towels and bedding, extra spices, condiments, and coffee, a nice laundry facility on the ground floor, firewood for the camp fire outside, and an awesome grill and outdoor facility with plenty of seating on the river's edge. Our dogs loved romping in the lake. The only thing that the cabin didn't have was shampoo/conditioner, but there was plenty of soap in the bathroom and kitchen. The water heater worked great, so there was no issue with hot showers or hot water in the kitchen sink. Once you get the fireplace roaring, it's wonderful being able to settle in with a hot mug of coffee, free fast wifi, and satellite TV. Everything during our stay was perfect. We would definitely book this cabin again in the future for the holidays.

The paddocks are fantastic and give your horses plenty of space to roam and relax after a long ride. Everything was well-maintained--clean, freshly mowed, and the bathrooms were spotless and spacious. As for the trails, there aren't many. The main 8-mile trail is mostly an old blacktop/gravel road. We also rode the Morrell Trail, which takes you to the top of the mountain. Be prepared for a lot of switchbacks--about 16 inches wide--with a drop-off on one side and a dirt or rock wall on the other. We had an inexperienced rider with us on a solid horse and had no issues. I'm glad we did it, but I probably wouldn't do it again--lol. I've seen some comments about the road leading into the campground. Yes, it is narrow, but I didn't have any problems with my 35-foot truck and trailer. Honestly, I've been on narrower roads in Indiana. We also took a day trip to the Blue Hole, which is definitely worth visiting--especially on a hot day. One tip: don't wear flip-flops for the walk down.

Two or three times a week we attend a line dancing class and really enjoy that time. They also have a MMA training area, which I have not used, that people rave about. Overall, nothing but positives to say, especially for the cost.

We had an incredible time with the UTZs! We went on the guided tour at the Elk Park NC location. I know it doesn't look like much when you pull up but don't let that fool you. You can tell by the steep entrance trail that goes back up to the 80 acres of paths, that the adventure begins on the trail. Our tour guide Jerry was extremely customer service orientated. He made sure we were very comfortable in the vehicles, and would pause and give us tips on the more difficult parts of the ride. He stopped for photo opportunities and even arranged for a video of one of the climbs. He definitely made the difference in our experience. We had originally tried to find a horseback riding place and luckily they were booked! I'm so glad to have found this activity and was able to experience a great thrilling adventure in a beautiful wooded location where the leaves were at their peak. I would highly recommend this to anyone during any time of the year. read more

I absolutely cannot say enough great things about Off the Grid Mountain Adventures and their staff! We have A 15 year old special needs child which can make it difficult to find things the whole family can do. Everyone at Off the grid made sure our child was completely included in everything! They even sat with him so we could do things as well and we didn't have to take turns sitting with him when it came our time to go on the attractions as well. The joy to be able to see him zip line was amazing! And being able to do something that we all loved together was also amazing. My husband and I took our kids on the UTV ride, as a new experience, and we all had a fantastic time!! My 4 y/o wanted to go with one of our guides and he was great and very attentive with her during the ride. The staff were very nice and explained everything in detail so that we had a safe and great experience. Upon the recommendation of a friend, we took our family and our son's friend for our youngest son's 10th birthday. We are so glad we did! Everyone had a great time and the kids cannot wait to return. Bogus. They should literally be taken Off the Grid and forced to do something far more entertaining and safer like maybe a Toxic Waste Disposal Site with a Merry-Go-Round. The next day when someone finally came (as we were leaving) there wasn't an apology or any type of compensation offered. (It had gotten really hot in the house that night.) So, 3 stars is mostly for the customer service (or lack of) rather than the amenities, which were really nice.

There is information on each species and hands-on activities like dusting for dinosaur prints. Everything is on the honor system so your donation goes in at the beginning but they also have a gift shop which is really great considering that no one is there watching. It restores my faith and humanity to know that people are so honest. It does say this is a dog friendly activity, but a tied up barking dog on the other side of the fence made part of the journey a little bit difficult for my small dog. She was almost as frightened by the neighbor's dog as I was of some of the exhibits I went through that had sound and scared the heck out of me. They don't call it backyard terriers for nothing :) but it's all in fun. Don't be afraid of the parking even though it can get a little tight. We had fun and this is definitely an affordable way to kill some time and keep the kids busy while they learn.

It was free with a suggested 5 dollar donation. We donated before we knew what we were getting into but darn it, we were SO IMPRESSED!!! There must have been 50 dinos over acres and acres of land. I got in a good mile of walking there. What a fun way to spend an hour or two!

My dad found this place, and we went for a two our ride in Cherokee. I have ridden before, but not in decades. My wife has ridden a few times, her sister had never ridden. So with that set up, here is our experience. They were ready for us at our reserved time, signed us up quick, and got us to the start location. Horses were healthy and easy going, good for beginners. Ride was nice. Guide was friendly. Some extra things we wanted to do were accommodated. In short: they do what they promise, professionally. Highly recommended.

They have mild spots for beginners, and extremely difficult long hikes for those who love a challenge! There are many paths to take and different destinations, so you never get bored of hiking the same trail over and over. There's always a surprise. The view is absolutely stunning, and somehow, it's always so clean! I absolutely adore this trail, it's the only trail I go to now. Here's a photo of me after the hike! This has become my usual spot to just hang out and enjoy nature. It's very peaceful closer to the top, so I enjoy meditating here, as well. Definitely recommend this wonderful place!! Will never go anywhere else!
