I ordered a shoulder holster with a customized quad (two mags, a knife, and flashlight). Despite sending the exact models and a scanned in outline of the knife with measurements and discussing it on the phone with Rudy, I received a standard quad mag holder. At Rudy's request, I sent it back. Months later I received a quad which did not fit the flashlight (a SureFire Defender) nor the knife. I again returned the quad. Months past with several follow ups by me. Rudy would lie and say the holster would be sent out that week or that day. Nothing. Eventually, he stopped taking my calls. At one point, he answered his cell phone and when I announced myself he handed it to someone else who claimed Rudy was not in the office. A year passed -- still no working holster. I demanded my money back and Rudy refused -- until I informed that I was an attorney and would sue him out of principal. He started complaining that Americans are overly litigious! Stay away from this company. Despite holding itself out as a custom shop, they apparently are unable to make a true custom holster. In addition, Rudy is unprofessional and full of empty promises. And unless you're willing to file a suit, good luck getting a refund. Eventually, Rudy issued a refund for half of what I paid. He claimed that he issued two credits (no explanation why he would have split it up). However, the credit company states only one credit was issued. When I asked him for evidence regarding the second credit, he claims he can't find the credit slip. He also claims that he issued the credit two weeks ago and I should wait because it probably hasn't been processed. This is typical behavior of Rudy; he is very dishonest. A few weeks later, he finally issued a refund for the balance. After my experience with Black Hills Leather, I did some research. Turns out I'm not the only person Rudy has swindled. The complaints are similar to my experience - holster didn't work, Rudy won't return calls, no refund. BHL has an "F" rating with the Better Business Bureau. read more

I ordered a open top holster for my S&W 357 3 inch snub nose from Rudy about 5 years ago that exceeded my expectations .Really thick leather and it was finished beautifully and 5 years later it seems to hold my revolver even better than it did when i first got it . To this day its the my favorite holster . I just ordered a new leather sling and cartridge holder for my 45 70 lever gun . Rudy, this review is long overdue and I hope my words do your craftsmanship good justice. This all started a while back as I have aided the border patrol in a volunteer civilian basis to rid our southern border of illegal drug trafficking. I have a close friend that lives on the border and the "riff-raff" that comes with the illegal drug trade is a scourge on the land, as well as the good people who live on it. I carried a "drop leg" tactical holster and that was the only holster I had for my Sig Sauer .45. It served me well in the desert but in society it was an eye sore. I didn't prefer to carry it out in plain view. I asked Rudy if he could help me adapt one of his designs to my equipment and he and his team rose to the occasion. They not only provided me with a system that is well balanced and tactically suited, but also in a nice color tone. They even stamped my initials in it to personalize it to me. This is the only holster I will ever buy and it will serve me for the rest of my life. I will continue to suggest to anyone needing a quality designed holster or shoulder rig setup to give Black Hills Leather your patronage. The process is easy and payment is straight forward. No problems. I will say it does take a bit of time to get the holster after ordering but it is because the work is quality #1! I was a bit on edge as anyone would be when you are waiting to get something nice but it was well worth the wait. So I say give Rudy your business and give him your patience, wait for it, it's worth every penny. One more quick remark, my 1911 is the desert model (Scorpion w. cera-coating and a special handgrip) which has an elongated magazine. Once I got the double magazine holders, I found my magazines wouldn't fit. I called Rudy and one of his team members answered my call and set me up to get replacements. I sent the old ones back with my magazines in it and Rudy used my magazines to special make me new magazine holders. When I got the magazine holders back, I found that my magazines fit perfectly, no more issues. DO NOT BUY FROM THIS STORE- YOU WILL GET SCAMMED! Called the owner of BlackHills Leather to see if he could make a holster for my berretta. The owner told me he will have no issues making this holster and said he does "Excellent" work. After the owner guaranteed his work, I ordered a holster for my Beretta from the owner of BHL on May 30th. I sent him very easy to read emails and nice HD pictures of what I wanted the holster to look like. I waited 2 weeks for the holster and when it finally arrived, it was nothing close to what I ordered and what was in the emails. I decided to try to holster my pistol and the holster is too small! It looks nothing like what I ordered now it doesn't fit. He used the wrong mold to make the holster. I paid $170.00 for this holster and I expected it to be somewhat close to what I ordered and at least fit the pistol. I called to ask the owner for a refund and he got belligerent with me. He shouted in my ear that he wanted pictures. As he screamed in my ear that I was "Wrong" and I "Don't Know What I am Talking About" I sent him the pictures of the "Tube Sock Holster" he sent me. He hung up on me so I called him back to see if he got the pictures and he continued to shout in my ear then hung up on me again! He even tried using the excuse that he didn't get the emails. I called back to ask nicely for my refund and he told me he does not want to talk to me ever again. This guy seems to have a real problem with professionalism and getting the job done the right way the first time. CUSTOMER'S DO NOT MATTER HERE! I don't know if this is how things are done in his country (Mexico) but not here in the US. The owner of BHL is extremely unprofessional, rude, and disrespectful and will fight you if there is an issue with his products. Please DO NOT BUY AND SUPPORT BLACK HILLS LEATHER! The holster he sent me looks as if it was made by someone inexperienced. The lines are crooked and the stitching is uneven. Now I am stuck with a $170.00 holster that looks like a tube sock. Please make sure to do some background checks on Blackhills Leather if you do decide to use them. As far as resources for a background check, start with a search on google and the Better Business Bureau. I would shop around before ordering a product from BHL. I have been extremely disappointed in how inefficient and misleading they were when handling my business after a simple order. I placed my order well over a month ago and just got notice today that it was finally shipped out. The most upsetting thing about this delay was the fact that I was never contacted by a representative of the company to be informed of the delay. And to add insult to injury, every time I called them to inquire if my product was shipped they always told me that my item would ship in the next couple days. I order a holster for my Beretta APX Compact 9mm. The item was promised in 2 weeks. Initially, I spoke to Rudy via his website messenger and emails. At first he was very accommodating. However the order ran late 2 extra weeks and he was very difficult to reach. Eventually the order shipped and when I received it I realized that it was made for a different hand gun. I started doing additional research and uncovered some very disturbing reviews. Describing exactly what I was going through. I tried to contact him via phone after the item was received and had no luck. I sent three emails and was finally responded to today 7 June, 2022. He simply said he tried to contact me yesterday and waiting for me to decide what I wanted to do. No such communication was ever received and I don't believe that any was sent. The best gun leather at any price. I shopped around then called Black Hills and spoke with Rudy. He talked me into adding the floral carving to my dark chestnut rig. I bought the belt, two holsters, (on duty gun and off duty gun), a magazine holder, handcuff case and badge clip. In the dark chestnut the floral is absolutely beautiful. I have used BHL twice. My first holster was a western rig for a 45 Colt. It was beautiful and fit like a glove. There wasn't a crooked stitch on it. The second holster was a shoulder rig for a Springfield Operator with interchangeable holster/mag pouch so I could hang my S&W M&P as well. The M&P fit perfectly but I ran into a snag with the Operator. The rail made the gun fit a little funny. I called Rudy and told him about the trouble I was having. He insisted I send the rig back so he could make a new holster and guaranteed it back to me by the end of the week. Guess what? He nailed it again. The shoulder rig is sturdy, comfortable, and very pleasing to the eye. I wouldn't buy from anyone else and will call Rudy first for any custom leather work. If you need the holster by a certain date, put it in the comments section of the order form. If you have questions, call the shop. They always pick up on the first or second ring. I have never had an issue with customer service. Good leather work is generally not fast or cheap. You will have to pay for a custom holster from BHL and you wait a few weeks. The end result is a holster that holds up for years and performs the way it should. If you want cheap and uncomfortable go to bass pro and get a galco. read more

I e-mailed them explaining what I wanted and received an instant response from Rudy. WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE EVER!!!!!!!!! My son became a Texas Ranger over a year ago. He wanted to order a double belt and buckles specific to Texas Rangers. My husband also wanted a single belt and a buckle and we were willing to upgrade our sons buckles to sterling as a gift. To date the only thing we have gotten worth keeping is my sons two belts. My husbands belt came in with no tooling and the wrong kind of clasp. The buckles were nothing like what we ordered. We have yet to have anything redone and we are not in possesion of the buckles. Rudy has given us the run around and blames everything on the buckle maker and makes all kinds of promises that never happen. This has been going on over a year with no results. Our credit card has been charged over $2500 and we do not have anything to show for it. Now Rudy will not take our calls or call us back. I have saved all my emails. I am getting ready to call the credit card company and if I have to will take him to small claims court. If the Review would let me give him negative stars I would. This is rediculous. DO NOT USE HIM. If I get any positive results from Rudy from posting this I will come back and give an update. read more

I ordered a BHSS thumb break holster for off duty carry of my service weapon and a badge holder for a 7-point star badge. The prices were very reasonable for a custom leather holster and I had read a lot of good things about the Rudy and his work. Good: Before I go in to what was wrong with my order, let me say that the holster I ordered for Glock 23 is fantastic. The fit and finish was fantastic and the holster is great with the features you get for the money. The Bad: The badge carrier I ordered is nothing like what I specified. I was very specific when I called and placed the order and even sent a detailed specification sheet on the badge. We have curved badges at my department so it is very difficult to find anything that fits them right. There are also little inconsistencies in the points of the leather that makes te badge have to go in the holder very awkwardly. After some working, you can make the badge go in it, but my problem is that I specified something very different than what I got (i.e. basket weave, no velcro) The biggest problem I have with Black Hills Leather is their customer service. When I placed the order I called and they told it would be about six weeks. I decided it would be worth paying the $25 to have the order "rushed." After 4 weeks, I began calling and was told that my order would be shipping "next week." Finally after four more weeks, my order finally shipped. I was told that it would ship by Monday and it actually shipped on Thursday of that week. I really wouldn't have been disappointed had I been told that it would take this long, but I was told pretty constantly that it would be next week. I have decided to make due with the badge holder because it really isn't worth going through this again. Conclusion: Black Hills Leather holsters are fantastic for the money. Black Hills Leather makes good custom badge holders, as long as there is nothing custom about them. Black Hills Leather has terrible customer service and is not very good at projecting time frames and it absolutely a bad investment to spend the $25 for a "rush" order. read more

Its a shame that some people think that custom or hand made items are as easily attainable as a pack or M&Ms at the grocery store. Leather working is a craft that takes years of practice to become skilled. If you want a well made leather item like the holsters and belts offered by Black Hills (or any custom leather maker) you need to be prepared to wait. It may be a "simple order" when you just fill in the blanks on the online order sheet but it is far from that to the craftsman who has just received the instructions for the project. Many leather craftsmen have a standard wait of six weeks for their orders. Leather Holsters and belts are not an off the shelf purchase. read more
