I had met Lex at a tattoo convention and her work was so gorgeous i knew i needed to get tattooed by her ASAP. Due to her (well deserved) popularity the appointment was a ways out but it was well worth it. She works so fast and efficiently and is a delight to chat with. I now have two tattoos by her with a ton more planned and scheduled. The shop itself is lovely and clean. The front desk staff is lovely, and the bathrooms are well stocked with hairties and menstrual products. All the carts have snacks ready to go for the light headed. I'm not going to bash anyone here but PLEASE do your due diligence when choosing a shop/artist. Make certain the artist can deliver the desired result, ask to see their work. Not implying any artist here produces poor quality HOWEVER many artists have a specific style they prefer. Don't just let the receptionist sit you in anyone's chair. You should actually interview your artist/tattooist and don't rush it. It needs to be a good fit all around. Going to school for years to draw is great however experience is critical. I recommend going with the experience and again ASK TO SEE THEIR PORTFOLIO. Now, as for the front reception area they are a bit abrasive and not very welcoming, not personable at all and at times seemed bothered to work as opposed to play on their phones. They are the clients first point of contact so I would highly recommend some training and observing of the owners. Unfortunately I will not return to Black Hatchet. Once I healed I was not satisfied at all and have gone to another very well established shop in Wallingford for correction work. Night and day difference from reception to skill level. read more

I hesitate to leave a review because I barely made it thru the process of scheduling an appointment. I cannot speak to the actual tattoo experience but based on trying to communicate and schedule an appointment I am very disappointed. As an anniversary present, my husband and I planned to get tattoos together. We shared our ideas via email, paid a $50 deposit and reached out for an appointment. Following a voicemail I left to schedule an appointment, I never received a call back. I called the shop in order to get the process moving. The woman that answered the phone sounded like I had interrupted her day. She was less than friendly and was very short in her tone. She spit out the next available appointment in the middle of October and when I said I was unable to take that appointment, the next available wasn't until February. Our anniversary was in August and an appointment 6 months later seemed pointless. I was not offered another tattoo artist or another option than a Wednesday morning in October. I was frustrated and overwhelmed so I just accepted that morning appointment. Following a discussion with my husband, we decided that this experience was unsettling and we didn't want to get tattooed at this location. We have chosen to "eat" the $50 deposit and plan to cancel my appointment. I cannot speak to the tattoo art, but upon calling another shop, I was met with a friendly and accommodating tattoo artist. My husband and I were very disappointed in our experience with black hatchet. We had planned to have several tattoos done at a later date. read more

Rating for poor customer service. I had two small tattoos done here in April and though there were a couple of minor issues (artist was late, wasn't prepped despite sending in what we wanted in advance), the work was good. I scheduled an appointment for earlier in December for three people to get very small tattoos in memory of our father who passed away this year. We made the appointment a month out as we specifically wanted to get the tattoos on his birthday. Got several confirmation texts and thought we were good to go. However, the night before (less than 24 hours until our appointment), I got a call asking if anyone had called to cancel my appointment yet. I replied no, i had received several confirmations but nothing about cancelling. She replied that the man who was scheduled for our tattoos had left the shop earlier that week and so they had to reschedule. I told her that we wanted to get these done on that certain day and that we were flexible on time, and since they are all such small things could they work with us to fit us in some time that day? She replied back no, but we could come in on Tuesday instead- clearly did not listen to what I had said. Very frustrating to cancel on a client with less than 24 hours notice- clearly they were aware of this issue earlier in the week and delayed letting me know. Had i been given more time, I could have looked for another shop to go to on my dad's birthday, but we were unable to and had to scrap our plans to honor him. read more

When I went in to talk to him about what i wanted, he told me he doesn't really do what I was looking for but suggested another artis Eric. I felt comforted that Ricky seemed to care more about the quality of the tattoo rather than just making money.
