I've gotten a few tattoos at Black Hatchet from Juliette (@juice.tattoos) and it's been great! Check-in is quick and easy. Super cute and clean inside which is a big plus. Tattoos always come out stunning! Juliette is wonderful. I highly recommend! read more

I had met Lex at a tattoo convention and her work was so gorgeous i knew i needed to get tattooed by her ASAP. Due to her (well deserved) popularity the appointment was a ways out but it was well worth it. She works so fast and efficiently and is a delight to chat with. I now have two tattoos by her with a ton more planned and scheduled. The shop itself is lovely and clean. The front desk staff is lovely, and the bathrooms are well stocked with hairties and menstrual products. All the carts have snacks ready to go for the light headed. I am looking forward to my next appointment. read more

Had some work done a couple of times with Lex. She was so willing to listen and work with me on ideas for my sleeve. And I'm so happy with the work. I always felt comfortable speaking to her about what I wanted from the project. read more

We had a really great family tattoo session (4 people) (all adults) with Lex Christmas week. She had some designs ready to go for us based on our communication and was super clean and organized exactly what we were looking for to start our holiday. The downstairs of the shop has 4-5 artists and TVs at every station with couches in the middle for those that may be waiting. read more

I'm not going to bash anyone here but PLEASE do your due diligence when choosing a shop/artist. Make certain the artist can deliver the desired result, ask to see their work. Not implying any artist here produces poor quality HOWEVER many artists have a specific style they prefer. Don't just let the receptionist sit you in anyone's chair. You should actually interview your artist/tattooist and don't rush it. It needs to be a good fit all around. Going to school for years to draw is great however experience is critical. I recommend going with the experience and again ASK TO SEE THEIR PORTFOLIO. Now, as for the front reception area they are a bit abrasive and not very welcoming, not personable at all and at times seemed bothered to work as opposed to play on their phones. They are the clients first point of contact so I would highly recommend some training and observing of the owners. Unfortunately I will not return to Black Hatchet. Once I healed I was not satisfied at all and have gone to another very well established shop in Wallingford for correction work. Night and day difference from reception to skill level. read more

5 stars all around! Started a piece with Ricky yesterday and I can't say enough about him and Black Hatchet. I waited quite some time, especially with COVID, to see Ricky and it was SO worth the wait! Ricky took his time to make changes to my design. You can tell immediately how much he values his work! True genius! Gina at the front desk is a sweetheart and makes you feel welcome immediately! I would recommend Black Hatchet to anyone looking for the best experience when it comes to a tattoo. Totally worth whatever the wait is! You will NOT be disappointed! read more

If you like a low key non-intimidating vibe this is the place for you. I've had an entire sleeve done by Ricky Borchert and a year later I'm still in love with it. The details are impeccably done and still look as good as the day it healed. Shop is very clean and the staff make the experience of getting tattooed fun and enjoyable. Highly recommend! read more

Clean, cozy professional atmosphere. Super accommodating when it came to scheduling my appointment around childcare. Jessika was very sweet, comforting and honest. I could not be happier with my very special piece. She was a great help with placement of tattoo. While there I also saw another artists interpretation of a snoopy. Beautiful use of color and creative flare. I would absolutely recommend this place to anyone looking for a clean, comforting place with excellent artists. read more

Had my first bigger piece done by Jessika Long and I am absolutely over the moon about it. She stayed late to finish it and made the four hours fly by. Loved talking to her. Everyone was so friendly and I felt comfortable the whole time. I really recommend this shop! read more

I hesitate to leave a review because I barely made it thru the process of scheduling an appointment. I cannot speak to the actual tattoo experience but based on trying to communicate and schedule an appointment I am very disappointed. As an anniversary present, my husband and I planned to get tattoos together. We shared our ideas via email, paid a $50 deposit and reached out for an appointment. Following a voicemail I left to schedule an appointment, I never received a call back. I called the shop in order to get the process moving. The woman that answered the phone sounded like I had interrupted her day. She was less than friendly and was very short in her tone. She spit out the next available appointment in the middle of October and when I said I was unable to take that appointment, the next available wasn't until February. Our anniversary was in August and an appointment 6 months later seemed pointless. I was not offered another tattoo artist or another option than a Wednesday morning in October. I was frustrated and overwhelmed so I just accepted that morning appointment. Following a discussion with my husband, we decided that this experience was unsettling and we didn't want to get tattooed at this location. We have chosen to "eat" the $50 deposit and plan to cancel my appointment. I cannot speak to the tattoo art, but upon calling another shop, I was met with a friendly and accommodating tattoo artist. My husband and I were very disappointed in our experience with black hatchet. We had planned to have several tattoos done at a later date. read more

Rating for poor customer service. I had two small tattoos done here in April and though there were a couple of minor issues (artist was late, wasn't prepped despite sending in what we wanted in advance), the work was good. I scheduled an appointment for earlier in December for three people to get very small tattoos in memory of our father who passed away this year. We made the appointment a month out as we specifically wanted to get the tattoos on his birthday. Got several confirmation texts and thought we were good to go. However, the night before (less than 24 hours until our appointment), I got a call asking if anyone had called to cancel my appointment yet. I replied no, i had received several confirmations but nothing about cancelling. She replied that the man who was scheduled for our tattoos had left the shop earlier that week and so they had to reschedule. I told her that we wanted to get these done on that certain day and that we were flexible on time, and since they are all such small things could they work with us to fit us in some time that day? She replied back no, but we could come in on Tuesday instead- clearly did not listen to what I had said. Very frustrating to cancel on a client with less than 24 hours notice- clearly they were aware of this issue earlier in the week and delayed letting me know. Had i been given more time, I could have looked for another shop to go to on my dad's birthday, but we were unable to and had to scrap our plans to honor him. read more

Shout out to Ricky, the owner at Black Hatchet. We had a scheduling issue that was handled professionally. Owner & artist both apologetic and that was really appreciated. Sometimes things happen, and in this case at the end...all parties involved ended up happy! Thanks for the special tattoo! Meant a lot to me! I'll be back! Sarah Lorusso read more

Great artists - best around. They are experts in their field and ahead of the curve. The downside to having talented artists is getting in for an appointment. I'm quite certain that I'll be collecting social security before I can get another appointment. read more

Eric was my artist and this dude is a straight beast! I came from Hope Gallery in New Haven and Eric made the artist I had at Hope Gallery look like an amateur. Not only is he super talented but he's also a real cool dude, he listens to what you say, and he gets it done. If you're in the market for a tattoo, check this place out. The shop is so friendly, Toni is awesome at the front desk and the place is very clean. Thanks again Eric. read more

Megan and her staff are nothing short of great. You can't go wrong. Clean shop. Skilled artists. What more could you want.

Megan Jean Morris and her team. What else is there to say? Megan is one of the premier artists nationally. She's done 5 tattoos for me, all fairly large. The first couple were done when she was still an apprentice and they're still fantastic. She's gotten super fast, too, but without sacrificing saturation or quality. She just keeps pushing limits, breaking down barriers, and getting better. The shop is super hip and always clean. Makes it tough to go anywhere else. read more

Awesome shop. Professional, friendly, down to earth and skilled artists. Can't wait to go back!

i've gotten two tattoos from Megan, and another family member has gotten a coverup done by her. She is an absolutely AMAZING artist and I refuse to go to anyone but her. Ricky is also incredibly talented! A few of my friends have been tattooed by him and absolutely loved their ink. I can't say enough great things about this place. read more

Ive had some tattoos done at other shops and they're... ok. Katie at Black Hatchet did my last one and its amazing. Her work is flawless!

Great vibes here and a staff that obviously considers each other as family. Sitting for hours can be a good experience or bad one not just based on the artists abilities, but the culture of the shop. I loved hanging out with these guys. The talent is unreal. Megan Jean Morris. All love here. read more

I was looking to get my first tattoo and Ricky was reccomended by a coworker. When I went in to talk to him about what i wanted, he told me he doesn't really do what I was looking for but suggested another artis Eric. I felt comforted that Ricky seemed to care more about the quality of the tattoo rather than just making money. After finishing my sencond of three sesions with eric, I can say that I will never go anywhere else. His work is clean and beautiful. Drew my whole outline freehand. The shop is clean, the artists are knowledgeable and entertaining. They made me feel comfortable through the whole process and answered all my questions. Ricky even took me in an hour before they opened to re-wrap my tattoo for me. Top notch artists, shop and customer service. read more
