Black Fig is mismanaged, unreliable, and completely unhelpful when customers raise legitimate concerns--especially when valuable personal items go missing. Outside of overcooked, bland food, these are the most important reasons this place should be avoided.
#1 - Poor communication from the start:
We were repeatedly promised quotes by specific dates and Black Fig was routinely late. I kid you not, one employee even apologized for a delayed quote because she had been in a "Benadryl haze" the day before. That level of unprofessionalism set the tone for everything that followed.
#2 - Missing family-owned catering equipment:
My stepfather supplied several of his own non-disposable chafing dishes and other nice catering pieces. The Black Fig team ended up using their disposable ones and set his items aside. After they loaded out, those dishes were gone.
When he raised the issue, Jessica and the other catering coordinator insisted nothing had been taken. They eventually returned only one item. My family went in person and spoke with three different people. The responses were rude, dismissive, and eventually shifted to blaming us.
This ceremony was on my family's property. Everyone who set up and cleaned up (besides Black Fig) was family who lives in town and searched thoroughly. Rather than helping or searching again, Black Fig continued to deny having the dishes--despite being the only other people on site who handled similar equipment. My parents eventually gave up trying to recover the rest, due to their incompetence.
#3 - Missing antique silverware (~$3,000):
On Wednesday after the wedding, my mother discovered that approximately 40 pieces of my grandmother's antique sterling silver and silver-plated cutlery were missing. These had been used at the event, washed Saturday night, and set out with the rest of the family dishware to be collected later.
The silver was still there when Black Fig returned to retrieve their equipment. After repeated searches and checking with everyone present (almost entirely family), nothing turned up. The only other people on site during cleanup were the Black Fig team.
My mother & grandmother delayed contacting them because of how poorly the chafing-dish issue had been handled. I called Jessica on Friday to report the loss, and she was superficially polite but quickly became defensive. I asked for the names of everyone who had been at the venue and requested they search again. She did not address those requests. Instead she said she personally unloaded the van and could assure me she hadn't seen any silverware (while acknowledging multiple people and vehicles were involved), then spent time calling the situation "weird and odd."
No offer was made to re-check equipment, speak with the rest of the staff, or help resolve the matter. More than 48 hours after Jessica told my mother the owner would contact her, we have still heard nothing.
My grandmother does not want to involve the police, so no report will be filed--but I strongly recommend looking elsewhere for catering. read more
