Such a nice pub nestled away in the countryside on outskirts of the historic town of York. We discovered it on a day out (a typical adventure to discover little English pubs). The Black Bull is your standard pub / Inn, on a quiet residential road off of the A19 leading to York. It was a quiet mid-week lunch crowd, overseen by a pleasant bartender who also doubled as a waiter. Expansive menu with good food-- I had fish and chips which was massive (I could only eat half). The chips, which I usually don't like (I'm more of a fries girl), were delish-- homemade and seasoned with salt and fresh black pepper. YUM. Served with a side of "Yorkshire caviar" (mushy peas to all you layman), it was certainly a hearty, no appetizer necessary meal. My husband had a NY sirloin grill, complete with cooked chopped tomatoes, grilled mushrooms, beer-battered onion rings and a side of salad and chips-- oh, and a yummy blue cheese sauce. His steak was cooked perfectly, and he inhaled it. Seriously-- he didn't talk to me for about 20 minutes.
Good place to stop when adventuring around the countryside if you're ever in the vicinity of York-- and while we didn't stay the night, based on the lovely staff, good food and the photos on their website, it might be a place to stop over in the future! read more
