We drove 7 hours round trip for the Black Bison Pub. It is worth it! I first came to Syracuse a few years ago for a funeral detail as a member of the honor guard. This is where we ate and I couldn't stop thinking about the amazing steak I had. So now, two years later, my husband and I decided to make the drive from Colorado Springs to eat here again. It was just as amazing as I remembered. I got the filet mignon and husband had the ribeye. It was cooked perfectly. The salad bar is amazing and the hubby loved the coleslaw especially. Reviews really do make a difference... after deciding to stop for lunch along Hwy 50, we checked to see what was around... we'd have missed this place, and an excellent lunch if we hadn't checked reviews... Anyway, I got Mimi's York Fries which were a carbo-loaded protein-topped pile of goodness... fresh cut potatoes fried just right with "secret sauce," cheese bacon, and nice tender steak pieces... I asked for sour cream on the side just to add a little bit of coolness, but then I roll that way... Hubby got the lunch special which was a Sloppy Joe's sandwich with a pile of chips. He said "they couldn't have done any better" with the sandwich which is impressive coming from him. Prices were reasonable, staff was VERY friendly despite the large lunch crowd and accommodating to changes in the order. If you're on Hwy 50 and need a break for lunch, or dinner, I'd definitely stop here... just wish it wasn't halfway across the country so I could try more of their menu...! read more

Not many options in this small town. I had eaten here before and had a good experience. The food and service for breakfast leaves a lot to be desired. The wait staff had no more interest in waiting on tables because she was clearly more interested in her phone. Once I ordered, it took nearly 25 minutes to get my two eggs, ham, hash browns and toast. The hash browns were as cold as cold can be and the rest of the food barely warm. The ham was a nice thick serving size which made up a little bit. I'll also add that the food is very reasonably priced. Extra points for the low cost. read more

During a visit with my in-laws, we came to Black Bison Pub for dinner on Saturday night. It's definitely the trendiest place in Syracuse when compared to the other Mom and Pop restaurants in the area. The decor has a log cabin theme with a nice big window in the front looking out onto Main street and a huge stuffed bison above the bar (hence the name). There is a nice selection on the menu - I recommend the cauliflower bites appetizer (special), bison burger, filet, and Kansas City Strip. I didn't try this, but my MIL said it was good - the strawberry pecan salad. All entrees come with the salad bar and a side. Overall, the service was good and the restaurant was nice and clean. We will definitely be back the next time we're in Syracuse. read more

This was a darn good steak house, nice atmosphere. Tried it for the first time a week ago, I'm sure we'll be back. The steaks were very good, the atmosphere was nice. My only negatives were that the tv's weren't on, as I had heard it was kind of a Sportsbar/ restaurant. They had no veggies for sides (for the wife). I'm also not sure if they have enough staff on hand because I think the waitress came by once during the meal and it took quite a while to get my bill paid at the end, waiting at the bar for somebody to come over. My boyfriend had the bison burger, I had the endless salad bar and onion rings-- everything was delicious! We chose a Colorado IPA from their selection of craft beers. The owner gave us a tour of the upstairs "lodge" where they have recently remodeled rooms available. If we didn't already have a room reserved in Kansas City, we would have stayed here. One of the few places in western Kansas where you can find craft beer and good food. The pub is located downtown and has an inviting atmosphere both outside and in. First I ordered a Buffalo Sweat stout and a spicy cauliflower bites appetizer, as it seemed too early to order dinner (the time zone change was still messing with my internal clock). Eventually I ordered the small KC Strip platter, which came with a choice of potato (I got baked), dinner roll, and salad bar. Due to the romaine scare of the week, they had iceberg lettuce and a variety of toppings and side-like items such as macaroni salad, pickled okra, and garbanzo and green bean salad. The steak was perfectly cooked and after all of that food, I was so glad I only got the small. I could hardly finish my potato and was way too stuffed for dessert. When I arrived (around 5:15pm), there were only 2-3 parties there, but soon it filled up and was busy. I think for a small western Kansas town, the prices were a bit on the high side, but now that I live in an East Coast city, it was worth $30 for all of that. What a great find! Bison burger was delicious, all sides were fresh and tasty. Local beer was good though bottled--no tap. Wife's chicken salad in an avocado was unusual but tasty--a nice change from chicken salad on bread or lettuce, and it had cranberries and a nutty taste to it. We also had the appetizer hummus with fresh veggies and small, warm, pita and a side of feta. The people were welcoming and friendly, service was great, server was very hospitable, prices were extremely reasonable--we paid a little extra for a bison burger but it was about $10 and a good amount of meat. The decor is great, light wood with industrial panels. It's light and bright and comfy. The only bad thing was we were passing through so couldn't eat there again and again.
