He is a brown belt and has plenty of experience at various academies. Those were his critical pass/fail criteria questions. And the answer is emphatically YES to both of them. Our kids were first to join at about 5 and 7 yrs old. The professors and coaches make it very welcoming for new people. They ensure that new students are purposefully placed with other students. And the quality instruction from the professors and coaches is so valuable. Each class is usually started or ended by repeating core values and keys to success in life. Next my wife and I joined. Our dream is to have this be a family affair. I could never have dreamed how well my wife took to it. There is a large group (also close knit group) or women who attend. A couple years ago my wife never heard of BJJ, and now she can't stand to miss a day of jiu jitsu class or the kettlebell class. If you are worried about egos and people just smashing on you, then fear not. Professor Fabio protects the students and his academy from anyone just trying to hurt others. That being said, it is jiu Jitsu and it is designed to be used in real life. But the overall feel is a "family" environment and that is cultivated from the top down. It is a perfect place to learn and grow in BJJ. If you have any questions, be sure to talk to Coco who wears many hats at Morumbi. She is amazing and my kids absolutely love her. We love this academy and all the friendships we've already made. My wife and kids are exponentially growing not only in skill but in confidence, positivity and happiness.

However, that is not the case at all, in order to qualify for a full refund you have to go at least 2x a week for the entire month and have to give a 30 day notice in order to not be charged full price for the 2nd month. Here's the thing, how could you possibly give a 30 day notice before the second month renewal if 30 days prior to that would be the day you first started? How could you possibly know you aren't going to continue there if you are just starting?? They charged me full price for an entire month when my son didn't attend not once. When I pointed out it would have been impossible to give a total 30 days notice they only offered to credit the account for "when my son returns". What makes you think I would go back to an establishment that is robbing people?! Don't go here, the prices are wayyyy overpriced and there are better options available in the area with businesses that don't steal your hard earned money.

Master Yoo runs a tight ship with his studio and the kids are safe and well guided here. With the after school program, he and his crew drive to several different schools in the Conejo Valley and pick up the children to then be taken back to the very well equipped studio. There the kids have time to play in one of their many rooms (a library room, a computer room, a gaming room, and then a general toys area) and also get help with their homework. This last piece is a game changer when you are a full time working parent who then needs to hustle dinner before starting the bedtime routine. All the instructors are so kind but firm with the kids. Instructor Nick is a staple for me who I have called up when I need a little flexibility with pick up and Instructor Wylie, bless her heart, has the patience to talk bugs to my very precocious 5 year old. What I love about this studio isn't just the taekwondo or all the fun listed above, but that they teach the kids to be responsible people. As part of the black belt candidacy process, the candidates have to teach/assist in a weekday class, a weekend class, and also draft an essay. The younger kids see the older kids helping them and it becomes a very natural process of "this is what I'm supposed to do". It's the prime case of leading by example. They learn to respect and also what's right and wrong. As the kids develop friendships with each other, the also protect each other as well. During one summer, my youngest was 4 and had gone to day camp. Another child was a little aggressive with her because she is a bit small, and the big kids along with her siblings rallied around her to protect her. I have spent time at the studio and befriended some of the children and their parents and it's been great building friendships beyond the kid's home school. Master Yoo and team try their utmost best to work with every child and parent and usually it's a wonderful fit, but sometimes it just doesn't. I highly recommend this place for you to experience yourself. Plus, where else can you get such a deal of routine parent's night out for 3 hours on a Saturday where additional siblings are discounted! My favorite part about that is that if a kid pops a balloon, everyone has to drop and do 10 push ups. I purposely stay just to wait for a balloon to pop. My kids will continue to come and we will continue to support till they say no more, but I don't see that happening anytime soon.

I'm writing this review as a concerned parent whose experience at Master Yoo's TKD was deeply…read moredisappointing and, frankly, alarming. Despite my daughter attending for months, we never received periodic updates, behavior notes, or any communication about concerns -- which is standard practice for any program working with young children. The first time Master Yoo raised an issue, it was suddenly framed as "ongoing behavior," which immediately raised red flags. What was described as "concerning behavior" was simply a 6-year-old holding hands with a family member and giving an age-appropriate kiss to another 6-year-old. Instead of viewing this through a normal developmental lens, Master Yoo treated my daughter as the problem and claimed other children were "bothered" by her -- essentially validating bullying behavior and putting the responsibility on a six-year-old rather than addressing misconduct from the older students involved. Even more inappropriate, he brought student comments into parent conversations -- instead of managing behavior privately and professionally. It is not a child's job to police, report, or manage other children, especially when their "feedback" is unreliable or rooted in their own behavioral issues. Yet Master Yoo seemed to take these problematic students at their word, without question, and without requiring accountability or apologies when their statements were untrue or harmful. Most concerning of all, nothing in my interactions suggested that Master Yoo has any training, licensure, or specialized education in: * Early childhood development * Child psychology * Childcare supervision * Trauma-informed practices * Mandatory reporting or safety protocol This program may be suitable for older children or teens, but based on our experience, it is not an appropriate or safe environment for younger kids. There is a clear lack of structure, age-appropriate supervision, and professional standards when managing emotional or social challenges among children. If you have a young child -- especially under 8 -- I strongly recommend seeking a more qualified, communicative, and developmentally informed TKD studio. From what I've observed, the real pattern is that she thrives when adults are emotionally attuned and supervising well. When that piece is missing, the dynamics shift. So I'm focusing more on finding environments that support her temperament

These were some of the questions I was faced with when considering a foray into martial arts. Of the several places I reached out to in the area, Eric was the most responsive and personable to reply. And you couldn't ask for a more down-to-earth, encouraging, respectful teacher than Sensei Perlman. He will challenge you enough to gradually push your skill level, but also accommodates and accounts for your limitations, be they temporary or inborn. Green lights, gold medals, and lots of fun!…read more I have two kids whose only real sport is karate--the karate purists--not that they haven't tried anything else but they simply prefer karate. Karate fits their aptitudes and attitudes. They came to Johnny Gyro Karate at advanced levels. My teen son had a first degree junior black belt for almost three years and my pre-teen daughter was a fresh red-black belt. They both wanted more in their karate journeys--more karate techniques, more karate culture and more of the karate nuance in between. By community reputation and publicly available online information, Johnny Gyro Karate is the only active Tang Soo Do school in Conejo Valley area that has genuinely structured advanced curriculum with current students progressing through black belt degree advancements. After keeping my kids here for over a year, I can verify that this studio consistently delivers top caliber teaching which yield high quality karate students, adults and children alike, at all levels. Who are the instructors? Mr. Johnny Gyro( TSD rank 9th degree) and his beloved wife Mrs. Noel Gyro( TSD rank 7th). Check out their unparalleled credentials on their website. People say the Gyros are "super nice", and we completely agree. They treat everybody with the same love and respect and give every student the same attention in class. What stands out even more is their humility -- despite their decades of experience and accomplishments, they do not seek to make themselves the center of attention. They are two lifelong black belt martial artists who live and breathe karate since they found it. They chose to make an honest living through operating a karate studio. They have always prioritized karate teaching over profit. Maximizing each student's martial arts potential is their goal. The Gyros's range, depth, and wisdom carry their students a long way. Mr. Gyro comes from a time when sparring without gear was a norm and when tournaments focused more on quality martial arts VS. performance&affiliation. Each trophy displayed in the studio tells a great story. My kids are incredibly honored and proud to learn martial arts from such a legend. Mrs. Gyro teaches some classes and takes care of the management. I remember reaching out to JGK on a Saturday afternoon and not expecting reply until Monday or Tuesday. But Mrs. Gyro replied me within two hours with every single question answered in details, and she even answered my doubts that I couldn't put in words. That's just the level of communication she has. I also love how she keeps everything in perfect order! So, how is the karate? In addition to teaching TSD traditional forms and etiquette diligently, Mr. Gyro incorporates several styles of martial arts into his curriculum and created many one-steps, three-steps, kicking defenses and self defense techniques. These are proven to be practical, effective and visually delightful. Mr. Gyro guides students to understand martial arts and not just practice it. The students here are dedicated , enthusiastic and make rank advancement at their own pace. Belt progression is never the end goal, but it is definitely a good measurement for growth. My daughter earned her first degree black belt in half a year, and my son earned his second degree black belt in a little over a year. It is important to mention JGK's black belt tests are highly rigorous. It takes exceptional skills, consistent dedicated training, and lots of courage to pass. My kids take about 4-6 classes each in a week and practice on their own at home. That beautiful certificate is hard earned! Same thing with karate tournaments. Mr. Gyro has advised his students " you are in competition with yourself all the time." My kids work hard to make improvements and have both got to the golds in multiple tournaments after being guided by Mr. Gyro. Johnny Gyro Karate is welcoming, safe, productive, positive and overall immensely rewarding. We recommend this karate studio to all who want to start or continue with their karate training.
