I started with the attitude that I would go once or twice a week. This week, I look forward to attending four lessons. Last week, I went to my first open mat that this gym offers every Saturday. I did loose 10 pounds since I started. 10 pounds does not excite me, what excites me is that I've been able to keep those 10 pounds off. This morning, I weighed in 12 pounds down. What I didn't really expect was the quality of the community that this dojo supports. People have been friendly and supportive. On the flipside, I didn't want to train somewhere that was 100% focused on training active fighters! I wanted to learn *real* muay thai but in a somewhat casual manner. Guy Chase's gym is utterly perfect for this. Guru Guy will teach you the real thing. For instance, you aren't just going to hit bags repeatedly merely for the sake of bringing your heartrate up. He's going to make sure you're utilizing your range properly and not lowering your guard while you throw punches. You'll learn proper form, combinations, blocks, counters, etc. Everything is very practical and designed for maximum efficacy in the ring - like what you'd be taught in a gym in Thailand. I was also worried that there would be pressure to partake in hard sparring. There is sparring, however it's light and technical and you only partake if you want. On the MMA side of the gym: Rob's MMA striking class is great and he will make you get comfortable in your opposite stance. Henry's submission grappling class is ridiculously fun and he is amazing at helping you jump into something that feels so completely foreign if you're new. Darren could not be more passionate about boxing and is so good about teaching you both the outer AND the inner game of boxing. In the kickboxing class Jon is all about proper technique so he will help you undo all the poor form you didn't even realize you were doing. Matt is a pro Muay Thai fighter who is approachable and a wealth of knowledge. In Jon's MMA striking class you get awesome instruction while doing really fun exercises and he will whip you into shape but with a sense of humor the whole time. On the BoxFit side: Mariel and Lilia lead super creative HIIT circuit classes that will make you sore for days. Mandy is a lovely badass and by the end of one of her intense classes you will be surrounded by a pool of your own sweat. Eric is hilarious and will push you to push yourself! He helped me out big time, offering a short-term membership while I was visiting the area for a few weeks. He's very cool with folks doing heavy strength training, as long as they know what they are doing and aren't trying to create an "ego-scene". I checked out several gyms in the area before landing on this one, and I am very glad I did. Save yourself the time & effort of finding a place to train, and just go to Granite Fitness and Performance.
