This is a great little hole in the wall. They see themselves as your local living room. For the frequent fliers, you can be a part of the mug club (something I loved about Maine and miss). That means when you show up, you get your same mug that you always use and usually you get a discount on your beer. It's a way of helping the locals out. The bartender was pleasant, and we really enjoyed the overall friendly laid back vibe from the patrons.

We heard the live music from around the corner and decided to seek out the source. It led us to this funky little brewery, seemingly located in an alley with outdoor seating and entertainment. After taking a group vote, we decided to delay our dinner plans and grab some beers and hang out. The beer was good and so was the service, entertainment and local vibe. Two thumbs up for Black Bear Brewery!

In the world of Maine brewing, variety isn't always king. For every lager, you'll get seven hoppy IPAs. It was a breath of fresh air walking into Black Bear. Boasting more than ten beers, which included several barrel aged beers that were just off the charts. Our bartender was fantastic, walking us through a brief history of the brewery and their offerings. The space is open and airy, with a great stage that would be a fantastic way to spend a Friday. We started, and ended, with a flight of everything. No regrets. Highlights of the experience were a fantastic session IPA and a barrel aged barley wine that was sweet without being saccharine. As a Portlander, I was thoroughly impressed with Orono's beer scene, but Black Bear took the cake in terms of customer service. Our bartender was a great conversationalist who was well-versed not just in the work done at his brewery, but around the state. Keep up the great work!

We walked over from the main strip of downtown and loved the vibe as soon as we arrived. Walking down the stairs to get to the brewery versus the glass blowing shop was so cute. With apples on the ground from the apple trees, it couldn't be more "Maine". When walking in, you order at the bar for both food and drink and then there is a booth/trailer out back where the food comes out. The inside is set up for open mic night and then outside they have a full stage where they host live music. There is plenty of seating outside at the picnic tables as well. We ordered a couple beers, the Margherita pizza, the potato chips, and the Carrot Top salad. I cannot tell you howwwwwwwww amazing the salad was!! I have never had a salad like this and I ate every last bite. The roasted carrots were so good, combined with the crispy onions and the dressing; it was heaven. The chips were incredible and the dip that comes with it just elevates it that much more. I believe it was a pickle dip of some sort? I can't remember specifically, just that I needed a vat of it. Then the pizza?! We couldn't finish it but man did we want to! Add all this tasty food to a beautiful backdrop and we were the happiest little foodies in Maine. Hands down best stop in Ellsworth!

Let me tell you, there is nothing "big box" about this place. It's quirky and fun. Outside is a garden area for nicer weather and I believe they have live music at times as well. Graffiti-style murals including Rick & Morty (can't find my exterior pics anywhere) and other fun stuff. They even had a bouncy house when we were there. And yep, we bounced around like kids. The interior of the brewery is also pretty quirky, chill, and fun. The employees and clientele are super cool & welcoming. They have a decent food menu that includes stuff from Oriental Jade (Asian restaurant that served Chinese and Japanese food). Oriental Jade had been around for decades. If you're a Stephen King fan, you know all about it. Their food is yum. Anyway, Bangor Beer has a lot of other offerings like fish & chips, burgers, typical fare that tastes anything but typical. The drinks: Yes they're a craft brewery and they also offer cocktails and mocktails. I've only had beer (did try the NA beer that had & it was good). Their pours are of the highest caliber. The taproom has 12-13 different beers on draft at any given time. And of course, beers to go (cans). Draft beers in growlers too. Oddball is probably my favorite. It's an oat stout that sits just right on the tastebuds. The 10-12 is a great IPA with just the right amount of hops. Total A+ spot.
