I think this was pretty easy to find and that's from someone who had never been in this area before. It's just a beautiful area, and this trail hits a lot of the natural scenery. There's a bathroom at the trailhead, and a decent amount of parking as well. Didn't see a lot of wildlife but there are boatloads of ticks in this area in the summer, so come prepared with lots of bug spray! Bonus for our trip this year, but this was one of the only hiking trails in the area that was open. There were several tornadoes around Memorial Day 2024 that left ton of trees uprooted and toppled, so this trail is clear as of June 2024.

Turn onto that dirt road and go down until it gives you the option to go straight or turn left or right. Turn right and go down that dirt road. You will see a sign for Compton trail head. Park in there and go out for your hike. Definitely worth it. It was a steep trail after about the first .5 miles. Going down was a bit tough on the knees, but the falls were worth it. Just drops really at this time of year, but impressive nonetheless. Definitely bring a snack and plenty of water. Spend time taking photos once you get down. Also, hike the unkept trail at the falls. It will bring you behind the falls and over to diamond falls, which is a hidden gem of a water falls.

My fiance and I have done 5+ mile hikes but this was a bit too much for my short legs to handle and we turned back at about 1.9 miles in. The falls were so close but it was just more climbing down rocky areas that I didn't think I could handle climbing back up. Make sure to bring water and a snack. Also bring a walking stick or find a branch to remove spiders from your path.

Some pointers before hiking the trail: - It is referred to as an easy trail, though I would consider it more moderate in difficulty. There are a lot of rocks on the trail and uneven footing. You will be doing a lot of uphill and downhill walking so make sure to get some good hiking shoes/boots. - Try to drive an SUV or 4 wheel drive car because the journey to the parking area is largely a dirt road with rocks and gravel. There are a lot of twists and turns and it is a fairly steep drive up the mountain. Take County Rd 5, it's easier on the car, I promise. - Come earlier in the morning in order to get beautiful pictures and less groups of people. Makes for a much more enjoyable experience in nature. Overall, this is a must-hike trail if you're in Arkansas. The view of the peak is incredible and stunning. The journey there isn't too difficult as long as you are prepared. Highly recommend!

Accessible by sedan also is a big big plus bc my ignorant self did not take off-roading into account (and did it anyway) which I don't recommend esp if you have access to a Jeep or other all-terrain vehicle. I did this hike through the rain and it wasn't too bad but just watch out for slippery rocks. There are a bunch of slick rocks in the end where the cave is so don't be a dummy like me and try to traverse it because it's a little sketch but still super fun. You can easily dial this short hike into a workout and it'll def be harder coming back up. Bring some water and snacks to chill out at the cave, but always Leave No Trace~ Would definitely come back with my Jeep in the future. Winter time looks extra fun since the falls actually freeze over :O

Once you hit the trail these are technical paths with plenty of rocks, roots, and serious elevation changes. It's a tough hike or ride that requires skill and stamina. The trails aren't marked very well, you have to keep an eye on the trees. One of the trails connects to a paved road that leads down to the river, where you'll find access for fishing and some really nice views of the hatchery. Overall, this trail system is beautiful and challenging, perfect if you're looking for a solid workout and don't mind a bit of rough terrain. Definitely not for beginners, but experienced hikers and mountain bikers will love it.

The lower trails are quite easy to hike, the ones further in get more difficult. Drop a pin when you park-- since the trails aren't marked well you might have some difficulty getting out if you are on a schedule. When you drop the pin, you can often take a short cut back to the parking area.

My wife and I hiked here yesterday (June 22 2105). We thoroughly enjoyed it. Didn't see another…read morehuman being as advertised. Relatively easy to find and convenient. The GPS in our car couldn't find it but our phone could. Finding any description of it on the Internet proved difficult. I noticed a marker on an online map and then did an online search. This yielded the previous Yelp review and a short section on the Missouri Department of Conservation. (Missouri Parks and apps to locate hiking areas provide no information.) So, unfortunately, or fortunately, however you choose to look at it, finding out about it takes an effort. We liked the hike. It's about 2.7 miles out and back (5.4 miles total) so not a loop. It's competitive but not overly strenuous. The biggest drawback? A couple of sections included lots of loose stones, so exercise real caution or you might turn on ankle or something. My wife expressed disappointment that it offered no vistas. Good views might await you if in late fall or winter. But in summer you can see nothing due to the foliage. But we highly recommend it. Especially if you enjoy solitude and a decent workout.
