I moderated a panel last week and a panelist I was being introduced to said, "yes, the woman with the most amazing head shot." Yesterday morning we did our 5th(!) family mini session shoot with Stacey in a garden next to the Capitol. It's wonderful to get these beautiful shots of our children growing up -- and have some shots with me that I love that aren't selfies! Years ago Stacey took an iconic (among our family and friends) photo of my son sulking off to the left of the Washington monument when my husband and I were were standing to the right smiling while pregnant with our daughter. My husband, 3.5 month old baby, and I wanted to get our first family/holiday portraits done and had…read morefirst scheduled to get our pictures taken at JCPenny. It was incredibly unorganized there, as they were over an hour backed up and also told us that since we were 5 minutes late, they couldn't fit us in and we had to reschedule. You try being on time with a baby! We ended up calling Picture People and they had an opening within the hour, so we went over and got checked in. It was a night and day difference of vibes! Picture People was spacious with better lighting throughout the space, and they had 2 studio spaces with many different backdrops. They also had a large variety of props for the holiday, and also numerous "containers" for babies (basket, little couch, sled). The staff was also patient while I nursed my baby. I believe our photographer was Marissa, and she was professional, kind, and so gentle on our baby. She managed to get him to smile AND snap a picture of it! All of our pictures turned out really good. After taking the pictures, you have to wait a while for them to select the best ones and do some light editing. Then you sit in front of a computer with one of the staff as they go through the pictures and explain their packages. We weren't too happy with the green screen backgrounds so we paid extra to get the original green screen pictures. The digital photos in an USB was a reasonable price, and you can purchase prints that they print out on the spot too. I highly recommend Picture People for quick and simple portraits, especially if you have a young baby!

One of the things that attracted me to Splash was that they have actual pictures of their hair cuts on their website, instead of a bunch of stock photography. They actually do both haircuts and glamour photos, which is pretty cool. The haircuts I've gotten here have been 100x better than the fancy pants salon I used to go to. There scissors are sharp and I don't get split ends, and the haircuts looks fantastic for a long time. As a family run place, they have been here a long time, and the stylists stay a long time. Madelyn, who cuts my hair, is very knowledgeable of the industry and spends a lot of time familiarizing herself with the latest styles and trends. I love people who spend time to become experts in what they do. You can't go wrong here!

You should be aware that the owner (Mary) is not the photographer. She has no knowledge of, or…read morecontrol over, the photographer's work. I cannot recommend this photographer. I paid $450 for professional photography for my daughter's first birthday, a once-in-a-lifetime celebration that cost over $7,000. I trusted this photographer to capture such a special occasion, but the final gallery was extremely disappointing. Many of the photos were taken from low, unflattering angles, had poor composition, or were unnecessarily repetitive. Several important moments were either missed or not captured well. What was even more disappointing was the response afterward. When I raised my concerns, the photographer claimed that the angles had been "edited to eye level." That explanation made little sense. While editing can adjust exposure, color, and cropping, it generally cannot change the original camera angle or perspective. A photo taken from a low angle cannot realistically be transformed into an eye-level shot through editing alone. The photographer also failed to avoid obvious reflections in people's eyeglasses. Can you imagine paying $450 for professional photos, only to receive images in which bright white glare obscures people's eyes and faces? Instead of acknowledging the problems or offering a reasonable solution, Mary, the owner, refused to take responsibility or provide a refund. This was my daughter's once-in-a-lifetime first birthday, and after spending over $7,000 on the celebration, I expected professional-quality photographs that would preserve those memories. Unfortunately, both the quality of the photographs and the customer service fell far below my expectations.

I remember that there was a threat of storms that…read moreday, and she was extremely flexible, agreeing to move the shoot up to avoid the rain (which started shortly after we were done). I originally wasn't sure if we should do an engagement shoot because my guy wasn't too excited about it (i.e. he is a guy). But Anika put him at ease immediately and a lot of the photos captured genuine laughter, with all of them capturing the general happiness of the day. Everyone who sees the pictures says we look great and asks who our photographer was. She has an eye for picking out the best places to take pictures, and the pictures are edited in a way that really enhances the colors in every shot. At one point she suggested that we sit in a little fountain area that I remember thinking looked kind of weird. This is why I am not a photographer - those are some of my favorite shots of the day (I uploaded one here). I couldn't be happier with our engagement pictures...they will be going up alongside our wedding photos on our walls forever.
