Bittersweet is an exceptional place to learn pole, Lyra, aerial silks and take dance. The instructors are amazing and sincerely care about each and every student, as does the owner who is a champion on multiple apparatus and also a judge in national and international competitions. I can honestly say that signing up classes at Bittersweet was one of the best decisions I ever made. Everyone, including the other students, are incredibly supportive and welcoming. I have been coming for over a year and I look forward to every class. As a bonus I'm stronger than I've ever been and feel great. Please keep in mind that the negative reviews posted are primarily by people who are not students at Bittersweet. They spoke with someone on the phone, were late for class and wanted money back, signed contracts without reading them, didn't want to participate in warmup (which is essential for preventing injury and performance) or wanted to be put in advanced classes without meeting the standards set by the instructors for good reason - to assure safety and prevent injury. As a middle aged FAI (Formerly Active Individual), I have been slacking off the last 3 years and had gotten so stiff and always sore and achy. I started attending the Stretch and Flex class with Lexis a couple of months ago and already feel 10 years younger!! Lexis uses massage balls for myofascial release and stretching combined with muscle engagement that has loosened my stiff joints and given me greater mobility for everyday activities. It's all me and my weak core-- for obvious reasons! I attended a private birthday party at Bittersweet, and Summer was a gracious host! She's killer on the pole, she's a great teacher, and her strength is friggin' unbelievable! The girl's got some moves! first I will start that this location is beautiful, gorgeous, picturesque. 12 poles, smooth floors, many offerings. Now to the reason of my visit. I am relatively new to the Jax area &there are 2 pole studios around here, or drive to Orlando or further. I wanted to try BitterSweet out b.c they offer different classes that the other studio in area and I saw they were having a Halloween OPEN pole & aerial party. I thought to myself "wow! this is perfect ! what a great way to go there, meet some instructors, maybe the owner and also meet current or possible new members such as myself. I want to state that NO WHERE in any of there advertisements did this party state that is was for current members only. NO WHERE. The party was set Friday oct 28 6-9pm, costumes and games &fun times. I arrived 625pm. I walked in happy, dressed up in full costume and excited to possibly make some new friends and have a fun evening. I was ignored from the moment I entered. I walked in, there were a few people in the silks area and the rest huddled in the kitchen area. I made eye contact with several of them, smiled said a quiet hello, ( I was nervous ). I sat my things down and started warming up and put on my boots. For the first hour I was there no one spoke to me, no one approached me, I got a few side eye glances that i noticed but just ignored the vibe I was feeling. at about 730 they started to come to the dance floor area &said group photo time- felt super awkward and again still no one said anything to me. (side note- when you don't recognize someone enter your business, you would normally approach them correct? introduce yourself, say hello? not the case here as I stated I was completely ignored till 740 when I was first spoken to. Also I have been to many studios in many states and a couple different open pole studio parties- now if it not stated that these are MEMBERS ONLY than like 99% of people we assume it is open to anyone- the point of a studio party- get together, play games, have some snacks, laugh, dance some-not a structured class obviously, MEET NEW POTENTIAL CLIENTS, meet the instructors and or the owner(s)) Alright back to the story- after the group photo was taken at about 730. others went on to take some selfies and start doing some light poling themselves. I continued to do some floor work, low flow on the pole , then I wanted to do my favorite move-a layback. I did about maybe 3 climbs up a pole if even 3 full climbs - did my thing and continued down to the floor and more floor work- at this time i see out the corner of my eye that someone is now approaching me with a scowl on her face looking at her phone scrolling. first words she says to me "who are you? this is members only and I don't know you. can I have your name?" (now let me jump back real quick, when I first walked in all they had was a tablet with a check list of names to check in, well I did that. and again since no one bothered to actually approach me when I arrived over an hour ago or acknowledge my presence as a person, of course you don't know my name. I gave my name and she again said yea this is supposed to be a members only party &you've never been her. I'm gonna need you to come up to the desk and sign a waiver since you've never been here and this is members only (please say members only one more time to me) I also wanna state again no where in any of there IG posts said was it members only, you know mindbody has a feature where you can make it so only members can purchase and non members cant. yea that's a thing. so I'm up signing the waiver b.c hey no prob with that at all. all the while these have been the only words spoken to me and the tone of idk "disgust, audacity, how dare I come to their party ' that I felt in those moments was potent. she goes on to say, "yea this was supposed to be for members only b.c we don't know you or your skills and this was for members only" I've finished filling out the waiver &asked if she wanted me to leave since this was a private party. I felt so unwelcomed and so unwanted. "since you're already here you can stay but this was supposed to be for members only" - was her word for word reply and she walked off. (again please say members only one for GD time)I went back to where my things where gathered them up at left. walked out the door by 745. I have never been to a studio that was so unwelcoming and unwarm. I do not recommend for the simple fact that they were terrible unwelcome people. not a one introduced themselves and approached me, and I know I could have approached them but again I was nervous as this was my first time there. As I stated it is beyond beautiful for a studio but the owner/staff less than desirable. I wanted to form my own opinions about this studio b.c I had heard many negative issues with staff and classes there but wanted to give my own assessment. well with how i was "treated" lines up with what people say, make your own choice tho. The first few times we went in we were extremely happy. Jason is a phenomenal instructor, so this review is not based on him. This review is based on Crystal, who works the front desk, and the studio policy. The main reason I gave two stars instead of one is because of Jason and the cleanliness of the studio. Here's the problem. We live about 30 minutes south, in South St. Augustine. I was willing to make the drive because my 10 year old daughter enjoyed her class with Jason in particular. Tonight, we were 5 minutes late due to traffic. Crystal told us that my daughter would not be able to participate because the studio had a policy that once it hits 5 minutes, you can't join. The class had just started their stretch, but she would still not allow her to join. So here we were after driving for 30 minutes, my 10 year old daughter was disappointed and Crystal proceeded to tell me that I would not be getting my money back. She did offer a hands only class that started afterwards, however that isn't what I paid for, not to mention that that would have turned this into a 3 hour ordeal, (an hour of driving, an hour of waiting and an hour of taking a class). The most disappointing part was the lack of Crystal's empathy. Regardless of how many years a company has been in business or what their policy is , there should be some degree of human compassion and empathy. My husband called to speak to a manager, who was not there so he instead got Crystal. She, again, was rude. Asking him if he knew how much AeriAl insurance was and telling him that we should've left earlier. When my husband told her that I had no control over the traffic, she told him that neither did she. She implied to him that my daughter had missed the stretch, which was not true. I should mention here that the week before, Crystal joined the class long after everyone had stretched. The first time, we loved this place, I even took a class with my daughter. It's unfortunate, but I don't think we will be returning and I will be disputing the $25 they refused to return. read more

Bittersweet Studios is my circus home. I've been doing aerial for several years now, have trained at multiple studios, and have worked as a circus performer and I mean it when I say there's no other place in Jacksonville I'd want to train. The owner and staff all take safety very seriously and it's clear that they have respect for the arts that they teach which is sometimes hard to find with how many studios have popped up (not just in Florida) trying to make money on the recent popularity of circus arts. If you're looking to try a new workout or learn pole/aerial, you'll find that here. If you're looking for top notch coaching and to advance you skills and artistry, you'll also get that here. Some advice for beginners: be prepared to work but have a lot of fun. The instructors are fantastic and I've made some of my closest friends here. NEVER SIGN A CONTRACT WITH THIS COMPANY!!!!!! Treated horribly when trying to cancel my contract due to having to move. Even after I called a month in advance before the next $160 was taken out of my account & was told I have to come in person or write a letter with some document they'd send. I was in town visiting from NYC and I would have loved to experience a class here, but unfortunately I didn't make it on time because of circumstances beyond my control. They are very strict about their 5 minute cut-off. I lost out on $30 and they weren't understanding at all. It would've been my first time taking classes with them. I guess there won't be a first time with them for me. Glad to have other options. Edit (in response to owner's comment): I understand that businesses have policies for valid reasons. I also understand the importance of warming up, having done aerial acrobatics, yoga, rock climbing, CrossFit, and capoeira for years. The point of my poor review is regarding your poor customer service; a point which you've carefully avoided in your response. A business with good customer service would offer first-time customers options, not simply turn them away at the door and refuse to provide some kind of second chance for them to use the money they spent (whether it's 30, 25 or 5 dollars). Considering your response to me-- as well as your other negative Yelp reviews-- it comes as no surprise that customer service isn't your strong suit. And for that reason, I'm glad I have other options for training aerial acrobatics. Update (6/9/2017): Notice how the business has had to ask people to go on Yelp to post positive reviews since their rating was getting so low. Four new 5-star reviews between 6/8 and 6/9. Also notice how their negative reviews are all customer-service related. I have taken classes here for a while, and I love that they offer so many ways to get a work out! I have tried just about everything - pole, lyra, silks, stretch and flex, aerial yoga, hand balancing - the only one I haven't taken is their dance class, but I'm doing that next! All of the instructors have been amazing and are very big on safety! (Which is reassuring when you're hanging upside down in the air!) I went with a friend last night to the Sexy Heels Dance class and it was the first time I had ever been to any kind of dance class like that before so I was very intimidated. On the day of I called just to ask if you questions and the staff was amazing and answered all my questions and made me feel so much more comfortable and told me not to be nervous that I would have a great time... I still didn't believe them but I just felt more comfortable. As soon as I walked into the door and we started class the nerves slowly went away and a few minutes and I was already having a great time. There were regulars there and three new people but Kasey was our choreographer and she was great and showed us each move at a pace that was comfortable for everyone. I thought for sure I was going to be uncomfortable but I ended up having such a great time and I can't wait to go back again!! read more

AMAZING Studio!!! This is definitely one of those places that I hate being restricted by 5 Stars! I have been going to Bittersweet a little over a year now for pole, handstand and stretch and flex classes, and I absolutely LOVE IT. ALL of the instructors are great and TOP notch. I learn different things from each and every one of them--so much so that I would not like to say any one is any better than any other. They just have different styles and perspectives--and that's actually even better. Some are sexier, some focus on the strength and fitness, and I need all of it--so I take classes from each and every one of them. I also feel very SAFE with them. They challenge and push me--but don't try to take me beyond my abilities to put me in something that will hurt me--which is a really big deal. The interesting thing is--I have NO background in gymnastics...or dancing....or even flexibility. (Never ever even did a cartwheel when I was a kid!) But...this is a very safe and welcoming environment for people of all ages and levels. Certainly very professional, but above all--welcoming...and understanding--whether you are a SUPER-beginner (like when I started)....or literally....an Olympic-level athlete! (because they train here too). I like that the techniques they use to train, the honest feedback, and the system of progression that gives me a feeling of accomplishment. Some things come easier...some things are harder...at the end of the day, I love the challenge and being able to progress--and visibly see and feel that progress. It's fun. It's a workout. And...best of all....after a while....it really becomes a family. Everyone is supportive of each other--whether you've been there a while...or it's your first time. I signed up for Bungee Fitness because it looked fun. I wasn't exactly sure what to expect and went in with an open mind. I brought 2 friends with me, and we had an absolute blast! We definitely worked up a sweat, and it was so much fun! My favorite part was the last 15 minutes when Casey gave us time to take pictures, videos and be as silly as we wanted to be in the bungees. We were three 45 year old women acting like kids doing handstands, front walk overs and cartwheels. SO MUCH FUN! The studio is super cool, and I can't wait to go back to try areal yoga. I had plans on visiting this studio from out of town. I called in, as the site states to get instructor approval, as I have been pole dancing for 4 years. The woman on the phone told me they wouldn't have enough time to approve me, and she was very short and unaccommodating over the phone. I really wish I could have taken a pole class while out of town, but I'd rather it be at a studio that welcomes clients. read more

I recently had a mishap where my debit card was cancelled due to fraudulent activity (I was a victim of identity theft and somebody had tried to take large amounts of cash out of my bank account). As a result, my automatic payment did not go through earlier this month. I had to wait several weeks for my bank to send my new card to me. Within five days of the missed payment, my Bittersweet account was sent to collections and I was told today I would need to pay a balance of $208 in order to reinstate my membership. I get that businesses need to have policies in place in order to protect their interests, but honestly this is ridiculous. $129 worth of extra charges for a payment that was 13 days late? That is an exorbitant amount of money for a payment that was only $79 to begin with, and it represents an accrual of $10 worth of fees per day. How is this a fair practice for your customers? (Answer: It is not). The money is not the issue for me, it is the principle of the matter. Paying for the payment that was missed, as well as a cancellation or missed/late payment fee, I have no problem with. But to charge another $79 to reinstate the membership is lacking in common sense. For lack of a better way of putting it, this is greediness at its worst. I have not missed one payment in over two years. And in those two years, only one person at this studio has managed to learn my name. In addition to this, the associate I was speaking to did not offer even a slight apology -- Instead, she took a tone with me and advised that I had signed the paperwork. I believe she also hung up on me, but in all fairness, the call could have just been disconnected or dropped. I get that this long note probably means nothing to the staff members, and they will argue with me in the comments (behavior they should be embarrassed of, honestly, if they want to be seen as professionals). Regardless of what industry you are in, at the end of the day, you are providing a service to your customers. If you lose sight of that, then this is the result. As a consumer, I have chosen to no longer give you my business. Update 07/25/2017 -- I am being threatened with litigation by someone claiming to be a lawyer representing Bittersweet Studios. This person hung up on me, and when I redialed the number I reached the voice mail of a completely different person. When I googled the name this person had given me, none of the names that came up matched my location or the phone numbers being used to reach me. This is all illegal activity. It is illegal to impersonate a lawyer and to threaten litigation in order to demand payment. When I contacted the studio about it, they told me it had nothing to do with them as they had already sold the debt to the agency. I advised I would be reporting this to the attorney general, as well as several bureaus designed for my protection as a consumer. Bittersweet Studios told me they would be happy to offer their attorney information to me. I accepted the offer, as well as requested the name and contact information of the collection agency. In response, I was blocked from their page. I have now requested this information 2-3 times with no avail, and the original offer to provide the attorney information has not been fulfilled. The longer I go without receiving this information, the more sure I am that this is indeed illegal activity and I am beginning to doubt that the account was ever even sent to an outside collection agency. My next steps are to send out my complaints to the attorney general, the BBB and CFPB. I will also be documenting this on my YouTube channel. I am undecided about whether I will reach out to any local news stations in hopes of spurring an investigation into the legality of all this, but it's on the table. Inconsistencies: Bittersweet's only response to requests for contact information was, "They'll be in contact with you directly." and then blocking me from their page. This conflicts with what the "lawyer" told me because I repeatedly asked him to give me a callback once I was off work. He snidely mentioned if I'm at work I should be able to pay my bill, then proceeded to let me know he would not be giving me a callback and would simply begin litigation. Bittersweet's first response when I advised them of the phone call was that it had nothing to do with them because they had already sold the debt and were unable to be involved at that point. I pointed out that the agent seemed to be very aware of my conversation with Bittersweet the day before, implying their involvement. They then backtracked and said they are required to inform the agency of all communications with me (even though the debt had already been sold). The man who called me said he was beginning litigation on behalf of the studio, again implying their involvement. read more

Customer Service Terrible!!!! .....if I could give it less than one star I would. Do not give this place your business ...just called to get prices for a birthday party and the girl was RUDE!!!...I asked to speak to a manager and she stated she was the manager. I will keep my money. NO THANKS. Please look at the reviews because a lot of the reviews state that the manager is rude. I am glad I did not have my party of 20+ there. Instead I chose Ladies Inshape Fitness and had a Great Birthday!!! The instructor was great and we had a lot of fun. This studio is owner operated and it definitely shows that the owner cares about all the students like family. They offer co-ed lyra, silks, pole, and flexibility classes for both adults and kids. They have a separate space for pole and the lyra and silks apparatuses. The lyra and silks area has a completely matted floor so safety is clearly a top priority. The instructors here are talented and very friendly. They are all certified and really care about both your safety and progress. Many of them even hold national competition titles. Bittersweet Studios in Jacksonville is quite easily the most master-class fitness studio I have ever attended. I have been a member for 6 months now taking pole classes, and I drive through rush hour traffic from St. Augustine just to be a part of this studio. Besides the outstanding instructors and the wide variety of different classes available, the atmosphere is what keeps me coming back. This co-ed studio praises, encourages, and welcomes all body types and not once have I ever felt like I did not belong in a class. The instructors break down everything step-by-step if need be and always teach with a smile. Beyond the classes themselves, the studio is always clean and well-maintained. But what I appreciate most about Bittersweet is how professional they are. The policies are clearly stated and are kept in place to ensure each client's safety no matter what, and professionalism is what I look for first and foremost in a fitness studio of this caliber. I have been training at Bittersweet since I moved to Florida last April. The quality of training here is fantastic, and there is a huge focus on safety. The instructors here are very strict on developing basic technique and strength before allowing you to advance which is incredibly important in injury prevention. On top of that the instructors are very supportive no matter what level you are, and give honest feed back on form, lines, and movement quality. If you want a studio to actually help you progress safely I highly recommend Bittersweet. Summer (the owner) is also very knowledgeable of quality studios and coaches to train at/with when traveling out of town. I live in Central Florida and have been lucky enough to attend several different workshops and classes at Bittersweet. They always have the best instruction by qualified teachers. I will be taking my business elsewhere and I would suggest you do the same! I am outraged with this company and the business owner. I called to schedule a session last Wednesday after 12 noon. I was really excited about trying pole fitness. The owner took my info and my debit card number and scheduled me for the class. Nothing was said to me about cancellation or make-ups. A couple hours later, I called to see about attending the next class because I became physically unable to do anything (cramps) but go home and lay down. When I called I was informed by the girl on the phone that I would be unable to make-up that class because I did not cancel within 6 hours and it was posted all over the website. I told the girl that I didn't book on the website, I had called to book and she said that I had spoken to the owner earlier. I told her my situation and she told me that the owner was in a meeting and she would call me back. I got a phone call back back a few minutes later stating that she spoke to the owner and the answer was no. She then told me to email the owner and I'd hear back. I sent an email a week ago and the owner didn't even think enough about the situation or future clients to respond to my email. I called again this morning hoping to attend the class tonight and find out why my email hadn't been addressed and I was told that the owner was in a meeting once again for a different business and I would receive a phone call from the owner or a response to my email. Almost three hours later, I called back to find out if I could take the class offered tonight and was told that the owner was still in a meeting and she stepped out of her meeting to tell the lady at the desk that I could not attend the class due to a policy that has been in place for 2 years. How does the policy affect me if I had no knowledge about it to begin with? Also I was told that other people showed up to the class last week so I didn't inconvenience any instructor by being the only person there. When I asked if they sold out, I wasn't given an answer. Is it worth it to deny an exception to the policy for a first time student an miss out on a potential monthly member? I will be taking my business elsewhere and I would suggest you do the same! read more
