Best value in Lake County for a pretty decent course. Hit the ball straight or else. There is a lot of water and cattails that is completely unforgiving. Greens and fairways are in decent shape with only the tee boxes needing some work. Very challenging layout. read more

I did the Turkey Shoot 10/24/2020. What a blast! This was my first time doing a scramble with my wife and two other friends. Rich who runs the course is a great person, as well as the staff who works there. They made the entire day enjoyable. They gave out prizes and turkey dinner for $65 each. It was well worth the money. The turkey dinner was outstanding! I can say the turkey was the best I've ever tasted. We've played Bittersweet several times this year and highly recommend the course! read more

I haven't played this course in several years, but I always thought of it as one of the nicest courses in the area. Boy have things have changed! This course is not nearly in the same shape it used to be. I mean not even close! We have had tons and tons of rain this spring and almost all of the tee boxes were browned out already! Some greens too! I guess since the last time I played the course the Village Of Gurnee purchased it and contracts Golf Visions to run and maintain things. I guess that isn't a good thing because it's really run down and not even near the well manicured state it once was! I'd expect more from the Village of Gurnee. read more

Made a tee time for 6:10 which already seemed late but I wanted to get on the course. Played 9 holes and finished close to 9. Got back and the head pro was super rude and banned me from the course while claiming he said latest we could play is 8:30 but never said such a thing. read more

Just a brutal course, especially the first time you play. You need to play target golf here and really think your way around the course. It's in pretty good shape right now. Be sure and bring plenty of balls! read more

I play here every Sunday and really appreciate the value. For the money there is not a better course around. The staff is friendly and helpful. The golf course is well maintained and fair. The kind of course that you need to play a few times to play it well. Course knowledge is extremely helpful. The food is also pretty good. read more

I'm upgrading this review from 2 to 4 stars because management has done a great job keeping this place in good condition in 2013. Kudos to the grounds crew! Just played this on 09/2011 and it really went to hell from 5 years ago. First of all, there is goose crap in a bunch of areas; secondly, I thought I was putting through an Iraq war zone on some of the greens, although most of the greens were decent; and thirdly, this has the be the worst marked course I've ever played. Some holes don't have 200, 150, and 100 yard markers in the middle and when they do, it's off to the side, not in the center where found on most courses. I was somewhere near 100 yards on hole 18 and the closest marker was at 150 yards. It can be a very challenging course if you're missing your swing. The greens are a bit slow, but I get distracted from trying to avoid goose crap everywhere. read more

A difficult course to play, but well worth it. Had to really think out my shots and choose not to drive off several par 4s because of water that comes into play. If you slice or hook it, you'll find your self in trouble. It's a pretty course with a variety of challenging holes. read more

This course isn't very friendly in terms of forgiveness that's for sure. It plays pretty challenging with swamp-like areas and multiple sandtraps. I really enjoyed playing here, the only downfall would be the drive from Chicago to Gurnee. Once you're here though, it's great. You'll enjoy the clubhouse staff and houses come in to play on multiple fairways. Caution that if you hit one (like a member of my group did), they will come out of the house and run after you! read more

This is a great 18 hole course. Played today and the greens were in spectacular shape. Staff is friendly. Food and drinks are great. Keeping it in the fairway is much more important than distance. Keep that driver in your bag unless it's very accurate. read more

This is one of our favorite courses. It is surprisingly challenging - lots of rough, water, sand, and trees. We have golfed here three times now and will continue to come back. And we're also surprised at how great the rates are. We stopped by on a Friday afternoon and got a deal for $33 for 18 holes with a cart. You can't beat that! read more

I played mid-week, mid-morning in early July as a single with no tee time reservation. For a senior rate of $28 they gave me a cart and let me loose--I teed-off as a single with no one ahead of me for at least 2 holes and no one in pursuit. Although I think letting singles out is disruptive to groups ahead on the course---I ended up going through several groups--it worked for me. Bittersweet had a reputation as difficult and perhaps unfair---cambered fairways, lots of water, trees. I played from the blue tees, 6,345 yards--the tips are 6,751. I thought the course was challenging and fair. If you are a long driver of the ball and insist on cranking it on every par 4 and 5, you will be frustrated. The course is really designed to hit tee shots about 220 yards---any longer and you run out of fairway or you are out of position for the next shot. A little patience and placement go a long way. The course layout is interesting--holes are unique, meadows and ponds plentiful, mild undulations, some old growth trees. There is housing along a number of holes but I never thought it was invasive or they were "at risk." I thought the overall condition of the course was good---fairways provided good lies, rough was playable, bunkers had sand-- the greens however suffered bad golfers---lots of pitch mark scarring; it is a negative. The greens rolled consistently at perhaps a Stimpmeter 9-- not fast but not annoyingly slow. The Bittersweet facility is nice and proper-sized----pro shop with basics, bar and kitchen that produced a nice after-round sandwich--tasty, timely and pleasantly. You hit off of grass at the range, which is nice. The staff was pleasant and I had a good overall experience. read more

Prepare to be challenged. Course is in great shape and it absolutely eats golf balls if you are not an accurate down the middle type of golfer. Staff was great. Prices were fair and nice deal on used ProV1x golf balls in the clubhouse. Pretty cool bar setup with decent burgers and again fairly priced. Our group showed up minus 1 player and we got matched with a single. Turns out it was Sean who is the club pro - great guy. Overall excellent experience and will happily head back to Bittersweet in the future. read more

Went to hit balls on Thursday eve 5:45. Range is closed on Thursday to collect balls! This is a lighted range mind you and it was 80 something. Manager stated it is on the web site and clearly marked. Could be much better. Shame on them for such Tom Foolery. Ok course. read more

I've been playing Bittersweet for years and the course has improved each year. Yes, the course is difficult, but with the improvements it is very fair. Course is in the best shape it's been in for years. Pro Shop staff (GM, Head Golf Professional John Kiriakopoulos) is very helpful and knowledgeable about the equipment they sell. All in all a great experience. P.S. the beer is cold! read more
