Bitter Lake Park is my neighborhood park. I feel fortunate to live in Seattle, a place that values green spaces. I also love that nice weather brings out people in droves and Bitter Lake is a great place to spend the day!
The community center is located at the park, which is awesome. Adults and children alike use the community center and it's a great place to keep dry. During the summer, tons of people can be seen both in and out of the center, having a great time.
The play area is a little dated compared to other playgrounds in the Seattle Parks system. That being said, kids seem to love it because it has all of the standard equipment you would need - merry go round, swings, structures, etc. There is a sandbox there but I have to be honest and say that I am leery of outdoor sandboxes. During the summer, the wading pool is used quite a bit. Also, there are a bunch of neighborhood events like ones where hot dogs and juice are served as a way to encourage community members to gather and hang out.
As some have mentioned, there are tennis courts there. I haven't used them but see that others appreciate it and do put it to good use. Same with the outdoor lighting. Although I haven't had the opportunity to be there at night, I'm glad that's an option for folks.
The parking lot is a strange grade and the parking stalls are pretty small in my opinion. During games and such, the lot fills up quickly. With the construction going on there, the typical street parking is not always available.
The fields are used for soccer and there is a baseball area. I have seen both used quite a bit. Of course, fields are always great for open running, frisbee throwing, and all around fun play.
The lake is beautiful. If you want to keep things on the down low, the lake is often more chilled out compared to other places. There are a number of picnic tables at the park but honestly, I think they could use more.
During the winter, neighborhood kids of all ages gather to sled. However, the best hill for sledding ends at the lake and often a number of adults station themselves at the bottom to "catch" kids in case they are going too fast.
A great park! One downside is the lack of eateries nearby. Seattle Mobile Espresso used to be across the street but recently shut down. Also, I've already mentioned the less than idea parking situation. read more
