I was looking for a traditional German restaurant where I could enjoy a proper local dinner, and…read morecame across glowing reviews for Schlögl's--just a short tram ride from my hotel to Alexanderplatz. When I arrived, I was surprised to find it tucked away at the back of a small shopping plaza. And just my luck--the hostess informed me the kitchen had just closed.
As I turned to leave, she came running after me (I suspect the boss gave the nod) and said they'd be happy to serve me anyway. That small act of kindness set the tone for the whole experience.
Inside, the restaurant felt warm and cozy, with the kind of unpretentious atmosphere that immediately makes you feel at home. I ordered the mixed grill platter, which included schnitzel, a meatball, and currywurst, served with potatoes and salad. The food arrived almost before I had time to open my book, and to my surprise, it was freshly made--flavorful, hearty, and absolutely satisfying.
If you're looking for classic German comfort food in a relaxed, welcoming spot, Schlögl's is well worth seeking out.
