A good mix of tourists (like us) and townies. The place was bustling in the morning, which is a good sign. Service was very cheerful and attentive. Location, location,location!…read more You honestly can't beat the location of the Dean Court Hotel which is situated across from the York Minister. Prime location for walking the city walls, the Shambles, and more. Our room was tiny but there was room to prop suitcases on the desk and luggage rack. The bathroom was nice and modern and a good size in comparison to the room. Breakfast was included and I enjoyed coffee, yogurt and fruit. Some of the items on the breakfast line weren't available such as the breakfast lemon cake. Our only problem was that there was no hot water for showering in the morning!! Apparently there was a power outage in the middle of the night and hot water was not restored yet. When we checked out in the morning they were very nonchalant about it and didn't even really apologize for the inconvenience. They just stated the fact that it was out. It was definitely disappointing to not be able to start our day with a hot shower.

I've been to Bedern Hall several times for events, the most memorable of which was a 'music in…read moresacred spaces' evening in 2007. The Hall is 14th century and is now used mainly for conferences and for events such as musicale evenings and weddings. The bathroom facilities are surprisingly nice, and the people running the Hall are very helpful! The atmosphere is incredible and the Hall is a bit off the beaten track and not in the more touristy area of the city.

So nice! Also, they have bath tubs! It's nice to be able to soak in a nice hot bath after being frozen to the bone whilst on a Ghost tour of York. I'm not sure if it was weather that had me so cold or the fact that it is one of the most haunted cities in England. Freaky! And I got two proper sets of towels. That was really nice too. The beds were quite comfortable although I had a twin share, I was alone in my room. Somehow I lucked out with not having a roommate on my tour. Not complaining one bit. It was nice. The view from the room was nice too. The tea and coffee bar was a nice touch. The breakfast was top notch. A full English breakfast was served and they had a pancake machine! Coffee was still questionable swill but it's the UK, I should have been drinking tea instead. They had some tasty hash browns though. One of the better hotels we stayed in during our tour but wifi was not free. The wifi is £20 per 24 hour period (which is really expensive). The hairdryer is hidden inside a dresser drawer. This was unusual but at least it was easy to store.

Staying here 2 nights and got a "new room" in a new wing. My room was in the 5100 block of rooms,…read morewhich is on floor -1 and a long way from reception, conference rooms, restaurant and bar. The room was warm and searching for the thermostat was in vain. There is none. Instead I found a floor model air cooling fan. It worked when plugged in and did blow cool air, but the timer can only be set for 2 hours at a time and clicks very load as it counts down. Not only is it an inadequate size to cool the room, but it's too loud to sleep with on. In talking with others in my group whose rooms were on the train station side of the hotel, I prefer the timer clicking over have to hear the train arrival/departure announcements!! I went to lock some valuables in the room safe only to find it not operational. The staff did fix it right off, so was only a minor inconvenience. The restrooms in the hallways are easy enough to find, they are signed in the hall, and the hallway near them smells to heavens!!! For such a beautiful building - the conference room, dining room, and Garden room area are simply beautiful - I've never experienced such a lack of attention to detail at this price point! York seems beautiful, but I would investigate other hotels in the area. I wouldn't stay here again I don't think.
