Stayed here for 3 nights when I was exploring Yorkshire. My room on the top floor was small, but it was very comfortable and clean. I loved the bed. Just the right amount of firmness for me. It was an en suite room, so I had my own bathroom, which like the room was small, but again, very clean. I liked that my room was towards the back of the house as Holgate Road is a busy road. I didn't hear the car traffic as much, even with the window slightly open for fresh air.
The hotel is about a kilometer or so from the train station and the City Walls at Micklegate. If you want to try the the short cut from the railway station, look for the bike parking area, go through the parking lot and on your left, there is an access point to Lowthier Terrace. From there walk until you reach Holgate and turn right. The hotel will be on your left a little bit past the bridge.
I didn't get to try their breakfast as it wasn't part of the deal I got via Booking.com and because I didn't have time in the morning. One day I had to leave early for my North York Moors and Whitby Tour, and the other day, I also had to leave early for my train to Haworth via Leeds and Keighley.
The staff is very helpful though. I didn't have much time to explore York the city itself, so the ladies who worked the reception helped me out by giving me an overview of the city centre. They also gave me pub recommendations in York.
I would recommend this place if you're in York! It's quiet, affordable (especially for single travelers), and not too far from the city centre! read more
