She was a very nice lady and friendly during the appointment, but my hair was left noticeably uneven on both sides and in the back, which was disappointing for the price. I don't think she completely understood what I was going for, and I had to clean it up elsewhere afterward. I decided to try Bishops at Cupertino - Main Street, since I frequent this area and needed a fresh cut last month. Stylist Brande worked on my hair and she not only did a great job, but she was also very friendly, easy to talk to, and attentive to what I was wanting in a cut. Prices are reasonable especially when comparing to some of the other hair salons in South Bay. I also like the fact that the shop hours are open daily and includes evenings. Parking is available and I have never had an issue in Main Street, but there are peak times when it could be hard to find a stall in the central area. read more

This was my first experience at a US hair salon since moving from Australia in December. I have dark brown hair with a halo of very light blonde that needed to be retouched. I received a call the day before my appointment asking to make my appointment 45 minutes later as the stylist I had booked with was allergic to bleach and couldn't do my service. This was fine and I agreed, however when I arrived she tried to palm me off to the same stylist that I was told was allergic which was very confusing to me. Once my service started we went over want I wanted and she was confident that she could execute it. While I know my roots were on the longer side and can make it a little more difficult to achieve an even result I've never had a problem when getting my hair done back home. Taking the time to bleach the longer sections before going back to apply at the roots is really all that needed to be done. The bleach was just slapped on haphazardly and doesn't even reach the roots in some sections, particularly at the top where my part is. I'm also left with dark yellow banding in patches. When it came time to rinse out the bleach she was very rough. At one point she got me to lift my head by pulling me up by my hair instead of lifting my head or simply asking me to lift my head. She used her nails to scrap at my scalp. While that wasn't necessarily painful, it was very uncomfortable. Water was spraying all over my face (I would expect it to happen a little bit but my face was literally wet). This is where I assumed a toner would be used. I'm not sure if salons in the US expect you to ask for a specific toner as in my experience toning always follows bleach and I had mentioned that my previous hairdresser would tone my blonde to an ashy tone or almost white which I was again wanting. As she was blowdrying she made comments about how good the work was and how nice it looked. She gave me a side part even tho I came in with middle part and my hair naturally has a middle part. At first glance things looked ok. I just wanted to be done with the service. I paid and went to leave and was asked if i wanted to send gratuity via Zelle or Venmo. Being asked to tip made me feel backed into a corner and while I really didn't feel a tip was deserved given my experience I tipped anyway. I don't think anyone should be demanding a tip, simply have your venmo or zelle info on a small sign at the counter so those who would like to tip you can instead of putting people on the spot. Granted this could have been avoided if not for my own anxieties as I could have just said no but felt too awkward. I go get into the car and flip my side part over so I have a middle part again. This is when I notice a mini raccoons tail striping down my middle part. I can't help but wonder if this is why my hair was parted differently to how it naturally wants to fall. I went back into the salon and showed the other stylist who then called my stylist back to fix it. She said she "didn't see that" when doing my hair and while she was very apologetic... that's literally your job? She put more bleach on the entire section of hair making the parts that were ok even lighter than they already were causing more unevenness and dryness. She then used a spray bottle to 'rinse' this bleach but when I got home there was still powerdy residue in my hair. My part is still uneven as you can see in the photos. While Brande seemed nice the service overall was sloppy and not worth the money or tip in the slightest. I got home and decided to throw on a colour in hopes of hiding all the things wrong with my hair and noticed patches of bleach in my dark hair, on the back and sides. The lack of care taken during my service is incredibly upsetting. I would expect better work from an apprentice let alone the manager. It does say in their website that if you don't like anything to let them know so they can bring you back in to fix it but after already asking for it to be fixed and seeing more and more wrong I won't be returning. I'd rather pay $1500 to fly back to Australia and see my old stylist if this is the acceptable quality of work in San Jose. read more

I really hate giving bad reviews but I am very unhappy with my haircut. I specifically asked for my hair to be cut shoulder length. We confirmed three times that the end result would be shoulder length. Instead I got a super short bob. Even as they were cutting the hair I asked them if this is some kind of layering technique and if the front pieces would be shoulder length and they said yes but that never happened. I have been to this location and other bishops in the past and I've never had such a bad experience!! As soon as I entered the shop, I was offered a complimentary beverage (water, coffee, hot cocoa, and beer). Backstory : I walked in w/ an appointment @4:30pm on a Friday . I had semi damp hair from this am shower and long hair past my shoulders down to the first ribs. (For reference my hair is somewhat corse and pretty thick.) I tend to shy away from new haircut places or new stylists because my hair is straight but with a little bit of a wave . Having said that you can tell right away if my haircut is going to be choppy or not . I could tell right away I was in Great hands ! Paul used a different type of shear to texturize my hair + added volume with long layers in the crown area . My needs : I told him my long hair was getting way to heavy for me plus now that I'm a mom . I wanted to go ahead and graduate to a 'proper' mom cut aka not have my 1yo yank by my hair any time it wasn't tied up. Haircut delivery : I asked for a few things out of my haircut : 1. Medium length 2. Long layers 3. Face framing layers . He exceeded my expectations and we even had some time to talk about a hair consultation for a future visit. So i really wanted to love my hair but nothing i hate more than a hair stylist who's scissors happy. Oh wait i can think of something i hate more being told my hair needs to be cut because "look at it!" And i look and there no dead hair and very little breakage. I came in for a cherry ombré because I didn't want my roots colored. Helen was very nice but spoke very little English and the other person there for the more part was the same. Language barriers don't bother me because google translate exists but she wasn't asking enough questions to really know what i want. She dyed my VIRGIN HAIR roots to tips, bleached my ends for for reason because the bleach was in for 10 minutes and didn't change much. She dyed my hair first and then cut which sounds like a waste if product. When it came to the cut i wanted a TRIM AND MY LAYERS SHORTENED. When deciding how much to take off she immediately offered 7 inches off...FOR A TRIM i said no. She goes down an inch I say no less hair after this back and forth leaves us with 1 inch off she slides her scissors up 3 inches and chops then ask "is that good?" To which i reply we cant go back now. When it came to my layers i told her short layers and she said no. Why the fuck am I arguing to have the hair i want AFTER YOU ALREADY CUT TOO MUCH???? Anyway. The dye was not exactly what i wanted and the cut was absolutely too short. Will not be going again unfortunately. (TLDR: My first cut was what i wanted and my second cut became what i wanted and needed, i loved it, also i felt v comfortable as a queer person and don't feel like my haircut was over feminized when i wanted a masc cut) So this is the second time i came here and i really appreciated Maria and the cut she did for me. i want to say that my first here with another stylist went well. i went from having hair down to my back to above my ears. for my initial haircut i wanted a shaggier cut with layers to give basically a wolf cut. i was happy with it and it was what i wanted i just had difficulty with the length on the back hitting my collar and i was starting to get overstimulated everyday from it so i knew i needed to go back to get another cut. I didn't have a clear picture in mind for what i wanted but i gave the reference below of a low taper skin fade with more length on top. Anyone else out there longing for one of those old-school barber experiences for men? I'm so glad that I discovered Bishop's, near Dough Zone in Cupertino. Just my good luck that Marc, the owner, happened to be there and he made sure his crew took great care of me. It's a full service salon, but if you're like me, you've noticed that it's difficult to find a licensed barber in one. Thank goodness that Theresa, my stylist and certified barber, was able to squeeze me into an open slot on a Sat morning. She gave me the works, starting with a style consultation, on what I should do with that weasel I let take over my face. Then, after plotting a course of action, she gave me a beard trim, hot towel shave, then finished it all off with a hot towel head shave. Before leaving, I picked up some wonderful smelling beard moisturizer, which I'm now using everyday. Great start on my weekend! Had a really bad experience where I was stuck waiting for almost 2 hours. I had made an appointment and was told when I got there that they were running behind, and it would be about a 15-20 minute wait by the receptionist, and was offered a water coffee or a beer to which I respectfully declined. I was scheduled with Brenda or Brande and didn't mind waiting 20 minutes however, 20 quickly became 30 then 40 and I noticed she was juggling between two different people at once. Seemed extremely disorganized to be trying to do 2 peoples hair at once and she also kept snapping at the receptionist to give me a beer or some kind of beverage to make sure I was attended to. After waiting for an hour and 30 minutes I decided to cancel my appointment and leave, the receptionist asked if I wanted to reschedule to which I agreed to come back on a Tuesday. Now I'm not sure if they are extremely short staffed at this location or shutting down but there was only 1 person in and she seemed completely dazed/out of it. She kept staring off into space while cutting my hair and repeatedly asking how much I wanted off the top when I had told her twice I just needed half an inch off. On top of that she managed to nick the back of my head and still insisted I bring my wife in. Please better train your barbers to stay awake while working with clippers! It's a chain, but each of the locations have their own distinct vibe-- and their own staff of talented stylists. They're diverse, LGBTQ friendly, and quick to offer you a beer or a water when you walk in. I've gone to a few Bishops but this one is absolutely my favorite because of Shannon. She's SO GOOD at what she does (she literally has decades of experience) and she also totally matches your energy. Let me just preface this review by saying that, having great hair is both a blessing and a curse. With that being said, the curse part of it is finding someone to maintain my magnificent head of hair. Over the years I have met more than my fair share of mediocre barbers and stylists, and have had some pretty subpar cuts. So, when I find someone that I like, I am loyal. The first barber that I ever had, I grew up going to him with my dad and went to him throughout my High School years and probably about a year after I finished. Then I got my first real job and got introduced to a stylist that I would go to for the next decade, following her to 3 different shops, until I moved away and joined the Army. So, during that time, I was at the mercy of on and off Post barbers. Once I got out of the Army, I moved to Las Vegas and found a shop that I liked and continued to go to for about 3 years, as a loyal customer, even though the cuts weren't always consistent. Until one day that I had my regularly bi-weekly appointment, I came in and I was turned away by my barber saying that he was behind and too busy. So, that was the end of that. Fortunately, I found someone good right away and found myself going there for another 4 years, until I moved back to the South Bay. Fast forward 4 mediocre barbers/stylists later. I happened to frequent a place that I was getting pretty inconsistent haircuts/fades from the person I had been coming to for a year. One day I really needed a haircut and my usual person wasn't available. So, I asked if a particular stylist, by the name of Jazz, was available. She was. I had been watching her give really good, consistent, haircuts and I had that fade FOMO. Everyone that was getting faded by Jazz came out really good! No lines. Everything was even. Here I was, having to go home after my haircuts and touch myself up. After Jazz cut my hair, that was it! I had found MY stylist. I followed her to Bishop's when she moved. A little bit further out of the way. But, definitely worth it! She is only the second person to cut my hair that has been consistent and done an amazing job every time. I have not once had to touch up my hair after a haircut with her. Finding a great stylist is not easy. That's the gift part. I will definitely continue to get my haircut by Jazz as long as I possibly can. Bishop's is probably one of, if not the best shop that I have ever been in. It's always clean. The decor is on point and very stylish. There are definitely a couple of pieces on the wall that I have my eye on. (I won't mention which, as not to incriminate myself if they should come up missing) They also have complimentary beer and sparkling water while you're waiting, which is a nice touch. I'm a Root Beer man myself, so I never partake. They are in a great location too. Plenty of things to do after you come out looking fly AF! So...what are you waiting for?! This was my first time coming here; first time coming into a hair salon in like 10 years. As a mixed girl (1/2 black, 1/4 white, 1/4 Japanese) going to a salon wasn't really my favorite pastime. Back in the day people really didn't know how to work with mixed hair. For my hair wasn't coarse (black) nor straight (white) it was a weird funky mess in between! But going to Bishops today really changed the way I see salons! I used to do box dyes and relaxers (occasionally) but was always afraid to go to a salon due to what happened 12 years ago when I had to get all my hair chopped off due to prior heat damage. ***Giselle was super nice and patient with me since I felt like the salon game has changed since I've gone. She did multiple strand tests to make sure the bleach wasn't going to make my hair fall out and she helped me with colors and style. She was super professional and knew how to take care of my hair which I have never felt and I've tried all types of salons white, black, cheap like Super Cuts and boujee ones like in Los Altos.
