Great hike that my husband and I did at the end of Nov. We took the trail that went uphill and went to the right. If you go to the left, you dead end to a private area of cows. We got to the end of the trail which empties you into a residential area. Another hiker said that you could wind your way up another hill but we weren't that adventurous. Dogs are welcome and when we returned to the starting point there is a boot scraper which was helpful after our muddy hike.

Bishop Ranch Regional Preserve is a lovely park in the rolling hills behind the San Ramon residential areas. Its fully open during COVID. The terrain is quite steep. For novice hikers, I would not recommend the main trail. Instead go for the Steam View Trail which runs along a creek and, thus, is much less hilly. Pro-tip: If you are looking for a loop from the parking lot, take the Grey Fox Trail to the Redtail Hawk Trail, to the Steam View Trail. This will bring you back to your vehicle in about 1 hour, 15 minutes. The spring is a great time to go flower spotting along this trail. On the EB Parks website, there is a "Wildflower Guide" for the park. I strongly recommend having it handy on your phone because you will come across some beauties.

One word: POOP! Found this local hiking trail on Yelp and was so excited to do a short hike with the family. It's located off Bollinger Canyon Road and Morgan Street (west side of highway 680). The entrance is about a mile or so south on Morgan. The brochure holder for the trail maps was full - good sign, right? Well-maintained? Well..there was a pile of dog poop right at the main entrance. Hmm... we walked/hiked only about .25miles in before we said forget it! It was crazy how much crap was on and along the trail. Unfortunately, even with the plastic bags provided at the entrance, some dog owners who use this park don't care and are inconsiderate. Let me repeat. There was so much crap everywhere! Fresh crap and old crap. I can understand the occasional cow pies and horse manure we encountered since it is their pasture. There was also a very very steep incline at the beginning of the trail- almost 45 degree slope. Be careful if you bring small children. The scenery was nice and we observed several woodpeckers pecking at a tree. I'm not returning to this place and would not recommend it unless you don't mind playing "frogger" with piles of crap.

Now that it's actually light out after work and the hills are a glorious, glorious green from all our recent rain, Bishop Ranch made for a great post-workday hike. I've seen these same hills from my office building and didn't realize it was part of the East Bay Regional Park system. Easy access to the trail head if you take San Ramon Valley Blvd South, then make a right on Morgan Drive. You'll see signs for the park just past a residential development and there is plenty of parking along the road. There are trail maps right at the entrance, that include both Bishop Ranch and Las Trampas. This particular preserve is on the small side and not too hard to navigate. There is a loop that will take you from the entrance to the beginning of Stream View Trail, going straight up hill for a short while, that connects with Grey Fox Trail, Red Tail Hawk and then back on to Stream View to get back down to where you parked. Because of the lateness of the hour (we arrived close to 6 PM. and weren't quite sure how long the whole loop would take us), we did part of the Stream View Trail and Grey Fox, with back tracking. Most of the trail is quite open and unshaded, making it perfect for this time of year, but highly advisable to stay away from during the summer. However, part of the Stream View trail had a meandering, more narrow trail that had some shade. There were some fallen trees along that path, but completely manageable to get around. This is a great park to visit when you only have a short time to hike and/or are with more novice hikers. It seems perfect for an early evening nature walk and if I lived nearby, I'd use this area for regular walks versus a paved path. We didn't run across any cows, but plenty of signs in the park that they are around, at least part of the time. We've already got plans to come back in another week or two and make this a regular spot during the nicer weather to get fresh air and some extra steps after work.

We love coming here. It's been a safe haven for us and the kids look forward to our weekly hikes here.

Steep hill, lovely views, lots of cows. Unfortunately we visited the day after a rain and the trail was almost completely mud. I slipped twice during a 30 minute mud hike, and picked 5 ticks off the dog after getting to the car. It is a very beautiful walk but I would not go again as it doesn't fit my needs. Lots of cows means putting the leash on the dog repeatedly, and with a large strange animal around dogs may slip voice control easily. Also, ticks!!! ): I would recommend here to anyone looking for a moderately challenging hike with a lovely view and a close look at all sorts of nature. Stay out of the grass and do a tick check before you get in the car.

When someone else mentioned how "steep" the trails at Bishop Ranch Preserve CAN be they weren't kidding. lol When I first came down across this bend right before the gate I thought, "Okay, I can hike up with my kid in her jogging stroller, but oh man. lol I didn't expect the very first hill to be so "steep." I was expecting the steepness to be something similar to Pleasanton Ridge. My other half had a brilliant idea of letting her kid walk while I pushed the stroller up. I'm so glad we all didn't turn around because Bishop Ranch Reserve ended up being so beautiful with a nice view. We got to see a family of cows grazing. They were very curious of my kids and I as we were walking by. I was so happy to see these cows being able to roam free. I'm NOT an activist, but I wish cows in farms roamed free like these cow's here. These cow's here looked so healthy, but more importantly they looked happy!! - Parking was available on a residential street (parallel) - Bishop Ranch Preserve didn't have physical trail map available so we stayed and hiked on the main trail. - Some areas were solid ground while others were still muddy/wet from the recent rain. - No restroom or picnic tables Overall, enjoyed our hike today. Other hikers here were very kind and friendly.

My friend and I were looking for a trail not too far from where we lived and we stumbled on this place! It was hard to find at first, but we were glad that we decided to keep driving down the street where we eventually saw the park sign. We expected cow turds (since we read previous reviews), but we were pleasantly surprised to find out there wasn't any! The weather was nearly perfect, and we both had a good time. There was some steep hills throughout the trail, but we made it! We will definitely feel sore tomorrow!

I went on my first hike at Bishop Ranch Regional Preserve on a weekend morning. I never would have known there was a trail there if my hiking friends hadn't suggested it. BRRP is nestled in a residential area with street parking by the trail head. The location is easy to get to right off of Bollinger Canyon Rd. exit off the freeway. The hike itself was a strenuous up and back hike approximately 3.32 miles round trip. The trail was incredibly steep. The initial ascent was the steepest and you get up to high elevation quickly. I would not suggest this hike if it were muddy from the rain. Also, there are no trees along the trail so it probably wouldn't be a pleasant hike during very sunny or hot days. This is a great hike if you only have an hour to spend in the outdoors and you don't need to go out to the boondocks. It's not scenic but you will see the rolling green (for now) hills. It's a work out for sure trekking up the hills. Decent neighborhood trail. There are few people on the trail so you can enjoy the quietness and solitude. Note that there is no restroom or water available at the trail head.

I love this place for how close it is to my home. Who would have thought such beauty and awesome little trails would be so close to suburbia. What I love most is the terrain to the giant climb you do when you first start off to the valley trails leading to more secluded smaller river trails below. So many different kinds of terrain for such a local spot. Dogs welcome and never busy. Love this place for quick 2 miler+ hikes. In the Spring, all the fields of wildflowers are out and even some gangs of turkeys were gobbling their way talking to my kids on our last hike.

Mr Cow was nice enough to move after about 5 minutes of us standing way back to let us pass.

As someone else said...POOP. I mean literally you can't enjoy the beautiful scenery bc every step you take you're trying to avoid cowpies. I get that they are up there and grazing and I respect the animals and don't approach never mind touch them but there's seriously poop everywhere. So bad that the right hand turn you're supposed to take to follow the red tail trail looks like it's just a big ole patch of poop. It would definitely be more enjoyable if you don't care about bringing some turds home with you.

My daughter lectured me about wasp galls or wasp eggs that developed in galls which are the oak trees' allergic reaction to wasps. Learned something new today, we try learning everyday.

Lovely morning hike!

Good little local trail for San Ramon peeps. Lots of uphill to work yo bootie. The only think I'd like to see are little signs. Fear of getting lost is ridiculous and unnecessary but real! Love this little spot!

"Green Rolling Hills with Lots of Cows--Most Friendly but one Looked at me with Menacing Eyes."…read more I parked at the summit, and took the trail north. It's about 3 miles if you go all the way to the driving range at Bridges Golf Course. At that point the trail peters out. It looks like they are constructing a new trailhead there. The trail is open, so don't count on any shade in the summer. It's pretty much green hills, with a compacted dirt trail. Fortunately, it's not rutted. I found the hike mildly interesting, but honestly, nothing special. Near the golf course practice center, I saw a lot of range balls on the ground. I was tempted to take them, but I threw most of them back onto the range. I'm pretty sure I did not hit anyone, but a few times I heard some klunks, followed by shouts. I wasn't sure what that meant. They might have been mad that I still had 2 golf balls in my jacket. I did not notice I had borrowed some golf balls until I was pretty far away. These trails are good for beginner hikers, since there aren't any wild animals around. I'm pretty sure there aren't any rattlesnakes or mountain lions. But if there are, I did not see them. And even if I did see any, I had some golf balls I could throw at them. The only wild animals are herds of cows. And there are lots of them! At one point I had to go way around a huge herd. I'm not really afraid of cows, but one kept looking at me with menacing eyes and did not budge from the trail. I was afraid of that one. Could it be a boy cow? I was afraid to get close to find out, so I honestly don't know if it was a boy or girl cow. But he or she looked mean. The whole time I went around the cows I kept saying pleasant things like, "Hi Susie," or "Hi Betsy, how are you?" I'm pretty sure they knew I was a friendly man. I was surprised they knew English. So over all, a pleasant hike. Nothing really special, but plenty of parking makes this a convenient location. The incline is really not too steep, so most hikers will find this an easy hike. For yelpers who are geocachers, there are plenty of geocaches on this trail. I put out about 8 new ones, so there will be lots to find. Keep in mind that there really aren't any facilities such as restrooms or drinking faucets. On the other hand, it's really not a very long hike. Just watch out for that cow with the mean looking eyes.

Beautiful hike in the Spring, and a bit hot and dusty in the Summer…read more Be aware, there are many ticks here in the Spring. I went hiking with my friends here in April, and both their dogs had tons of ticks crawling around in their fur. If you are hiking without dogs, tuck your pants or leggings into your socks and avoid the taller grass if you can. You can also spray tick repellent on your shoes and socks before starting. That usually does the trick. Very fun and laidback hike otherwise. We've been visiting this trail for years now, and always have a nice time. Great views, and rolling hills. Can't ask for much else, locally.

"Hot Dusty Trails, but Lots of Free Maps"…read more I love the East Bay Regional Park system, but this is probably my least favorite park. The main trails are just dirt tracks wide open to the elements. You can imagine how it is on a summer day out here. If you enjoy dusty, desert-like environments with no water, and dying of thirst, you'll love this park. I try to come here once a year. Honestly, that's enough. Besides the main staging area, there are a few tricky entrances to the park. In the California Highlands condo complex, there are a few trails that eventually lead into this park. Keep in mind that those entrances are not open to bikes. I found out the hard way. There is an interesting side trail called Donlon Point. I believe it's the highest point in the park. There's a good view up there, plus lots of cow material. There is drinking water and a modern restroom at the staging area. Additionally, there are plenty of free maps at the gate. That's one great thing about the East Bay Park system. They are not stingy about giving out free maps. The day that I visited, the parking lot was nearly empty. You will not have trouble finding a parking spot. On the other hand, there's probably a good reason for that. As a local alternative, I recommend Las Trampas. The trails there are more interesting. Check out the Camille trailhead in Alamo.

You can park at the Ringtail Cat Staging Area, where there's about 8-10 parking spots. This trail is a loop that takes you literally through a stream. It's lush and woodsy, and there's a pretty steep elevation before you get a breather through a meadowy field of trees and grass. It wasn't crowded, so we took our time and enjoyed the Zen-ness of our hike. From the parking area, there's about a 1/4 mile path before you reach a metal gate where the loop begins. If you go right, you'll start with the Shred Wizard Creek part of the loop. If you go left, you'll start with the Ringtail Cat part of the loop. It's about 3 miles with a 720 foot elevation. There aren't many markers, so I recommend using AllTrails to keep you on track. We started with the creek, and it was so fun. The trail zig zags over the stream at least 25 times. There was one part of the trail where you had to walk in the stream, but it's so shallow we didn't get our socks wet at all. It can be a bit muddy. This was our favorite part of the hike. It's so green and lush. Once the creek part is done, there's a pretty steep climb to get to the Ringtail Cat part of the loop. This part is also very nice as you walk through grassy fields and trees. There's less shade here. There's still more hills and valleys along this part. Overall, this was so much fun, the scenery was beautiful, and you get quite a workout.

Once you get to the highest part of the incline, remember to turn around and take in that beautiful view! Along the way you'll see flowers and wildlife such as unique birds. Spring is the perfect time since everything is so green and in full bloom. A word of caution, stay in the middle of the path since getting too close to the outside with high trees, you may find some other wildlife! I did run into a couple of tiny garden snakes when I wasn't on the middle of the path, but they were harmless and merely trying to get away into the bushes. The mantra I kept repeating was that they are more afraid of you then you are of them! Regardless, stay on the path! Definitely a park that should be explored if you're ever in the area!
