The Fallen Angel Brewery is as good as it gets. They relocated to new premises at East Hoathly…read moreabout a year back and this has allowed for incresed production of some of the finest ales in the county. The ales are all brewed in small batches and the final fermentation takes place in the bottle. This means that you are getting a PROPER ale that has seen no chemicals or untoward processes. Many of them are also vegan friendly. The owners are very active at events in the county and I have had a couple of great chats at the Grape and Grain and the Chilli Festival recently. They are clearly passionate about their produce and if you try one of their offerings you will see why. They brew a range of classic IPA's, porters, weissbeers, mead and chilli beers. The 'Black Death' is brewed with a generous amount of naga chilli's and this makes a great present for something a little different. Their website lists the stockist of the ales in the area (they only brew in bottle and not by the cask) and you may also order directly off thier website. I really cannot heap enough praises on the Fallen Angel ales and their meads. Take pride in your county and get a selection in today, you will not be disappointed!

When I emailed them to point out the problem, which may have been a one off bottle, they initially ignored the email, then told me it was 'rude' and that was the end of the matter. Not a jot of concern, so all those who tasted said bottle of 'Gardener's Delight' now hold very low opinions of this brewery. John Turpin

I've done brewery tours in the US, Ireland, and England and the Fullers tour is really good. The…read moreguide we had (Lisa) was knowledgeable, had been with the company a long time, and had a great personality for the tour. She was alternately friendly, funny, and informative. The tour was organised around the four main ingredients of beer (barley, water, hops, and yeast) and it showed the old way and new way of brewing at each stage. Often you see an old copper and brick version and then you see the new, computerised and stainless steel version. Lots of the photo opportunities are in pretty poor light. If you bring a camera, be sure to be ready for dim indoor lighting. On the up side, you see a real working brewery doing its thing. You really do sometimes step out of the way so someone can walk by and keep doing his job. On the down side, this means they generally only do tours during business hours. Skive off work one afternoon, though. It's worth it. Parking near the brewery is limited, so be sure to allow yourself some time to find a spot. There's ample pay-and-display parking, but it's a lot of twisty turny streets in there. I'm not sure how easy it is to get to this on public transport. We drove. That's a shame, because somebody's not getting the full experience. The tastings at the end were generous and we got to sample lots of different beers. I had only really had the London Pride and Honeydew before the tour. I'll be watching for the Jack Frost Christmas ale and Chiswick Ale now.

It was fascinating to see the range of bottled beers in the shop and then the range of Greene King beers at the bar, many of which I had not seen elsewhere, some of which were trial beers. As one who generally prefers dark ales, I quickly latched on to the labels for trial Black IPA and trial Rye Beer, too fascinated by them to notice that they were not on hand pump. For the third beer in a tasting tray, I chose Rumrunner (rum-infused blonde). This turned out to be my favourite by far, simply because it was cask and had a nice, soft flavour, temperature and mouthfeel, just like that lovely half pint of Abbot across the road in The Dog And Partridge. The Black IPA and Rye Beer by contrast had a very hard mouthfeel and lack of flavour because of the chilling and carbonation etc which comes from being keg ales. Both of these had the potential to be really flavoursome if only they had been available as cask beers. Please do that!
