It's a shame that a statue of man so committed to social justice doesn't do him, er well, justice.
The piece by Thomas Stirling Lee represents Charles Gore who became the first Bishop of Birmingham as recently as 1905. The full-bodied subject matter seems a bit beyond the sculptor who was famous for carving busts. This shows from the neck down. It's interesting to notice both the rather rigid lines of Gore's attire and the somewhat conservative, you could even say clichéd, way he is calling the flock to prayer. However, there was more to Gore. The Bishop was something of a socialist, committed to aiding the disenfranchised and poor of Birmingham. Gore was also an author, writing several books.
So, the man is more interesting than his effigy. However, the piece is still worth a look if only for its unconventional pedestal which echoes the cathedral's tower. read more
