My mother was in a memory care facility. Shauna visited at least once a week, aides came another two days, music therapy and a pastor also visited. Everyone of them cared for her with dignity and respect. I received calls and updates regularly. It was an emotional time - yet Shauna was available and walked me down some difficult roads. The palliative care was perfect - Shauna worked with the facility in training and being a lead member of Mom's team. She helped with transferring her to Dunedin's in house AccentCare hospice to allow her 24 hour care and to pass with dignity and respect. Every nurse at that facility was professional, knowledgeable and compassionate as well. This group helped me navigate a very difficult, stressful time with understanding and love.

On Monday I said, "If the rec center won't let you play pool because of the election, please bring my husband back home." My exact words to David, but he didn't bring him home. They drove around and went to another rec center. Free mileage for me because I wasn't supposed to know that they left. My husband has bad dementia, and metastatic bone cancer, and cannot be saying where he wants to go. I have to know where my husband is, and made that clear. So because I complained, I lost a caregiver and have to cancel my doctors' appointments, no advance warning at all. My husband is very upset that his friend isn't coming back. I wanted someone else that played pool; they didn't have anyone else. I should be able to know where they go without losing the service. Buyer beware!!!

However, the logistics of getting him packed to TSA standards, making sure his home was secured, handing off his car to a transportation company and getting him safely on his flight was daunting. Veterans Serving Seniors came to my rescue. They were immediately responded to my first email and kept in both touch prior and during his trip north. Phil and a colleague arrived promptly at my uncle's home in St. Petersburg the morning of his trip. They made sure it was locked, closed storm shutters and even reviewed my detailed list of "must pack" items with him prior to setting out. They drove him and his car to the transportation depot and took pictures of the car prior to shipping for insurance purposes. Once the transport paperwork was signed, they took him on to the airport and personally walked him in and waited with him until a Jet Blue representative took him off for his flight. I had no concerns at all as I got text messages at every stage like a perfectly coordinated military maneuver. You can't get this kind of service from a taxi or limo service.
