I found this class after reading an article in a Parenting AZ magazine and contacted Laura by email. I came to find out that this program is well established in Germany and is called PEKiP. PEKiP stands for Prague-Parent-Child-Program. It's activities are considered "group-work" between baby and mama to encourage baby's independent development. It's main principle is that baby should not be pushed into reaching milestones, rather the infant reaches them at his/her own pace. Laura also showed us how to observe baby cues and what baby clues we should look out for as they learn to communicate in different ways. The classes are typically small in size and are taught right out of Laura's cozy living room. Our babies were also similar in age. We met each week for about 90 minutes. We started each class by singing an introductory song using each baby's name. I loved seeing my baby's reaction to the song when it came time to sing her name out loud! In addition, a new activity was introduced each week and we learned how to observe our babies to the activity. This was a no pressure environment; one week my baby showed no interest in the new activity but then showed a lot of interest or would master the activity the next time we met! This was mind blowing for me! Meeting in such a small, intimate environment also helped us not only form a strong bond with our babies but it also allowed us new mamas to forge new friendships which are invaluable as we navigate parenthood. Lastly, most of the toys we used in class were homemade by Laura, which meant we could go home and recreate those items without having to spend extra $$ on expensive toys. However, there were some items we used in class that could be purchased at IKEA or Amazon if needed. This class is a MUST for first time mamas! I highly recommend :)

I actually had no plans to have a doula for my first pregnancy…read moreuntil I was at a birthing class and found out that I was one of the only ones there who hadn't secured a doula. After doing some research, I found that my insurance covered doula services, so I immediately began researching doulas. I came across Noleen and noticed her across the board 5 star reviews. At this point, I was 36 weeks pregnant and thought "There is no way this woman is going to be available for my delivery." I reached out to her on a Friday night and she responded back within a few hours! We briefly corresponded over the weekend and had a meeting set up for the next week. I'm SO grateful she was available. I enjoyed learning from her and hearing her balanced perspective about labor and delivery. It quickly became apparent that as a woman going through all of this the first time, having a doula was a must! By the time I went into labor a few weeks later, I texted Noleen, who was in labor with another patient. I was heartbroken to think she may miss my labor. She was able to send a backup doula to my birthing center, but that was only needed for a few hours before Noleen went from her other labor into mine (with maybe a few hours rest in between). Noleen showed up in the morning on a Tuesday and my baby wasn't born until the following day (Wednesday) at 9:23am. So to think Noleen went from one labor to the next with very minimal rest shows that she is superwoman! My labor wasn't an easy one and I REALLY struggled to relax and just allow everything to loosen up. I would get so tense, which ended up prolonging labor to the point where I requested to be transferred from the Birthing Center to a hospital so that I could get an epidural. I was scared that Noleen, my birthing team and my spouse would be disappointed in me, but Noleen was so reassuring that this was the right move for me. I felt supported and understood. There were many moments in the labor where it was so helpful to have Noleen there to answer questions, provide perspective and expertise. Which was incredibly helpful for my spouse as well. It felt like he and Noleen were partners in the birthing process. It's now something I tell all expecting couples is that the Doula is there for the husband just as much as she's there for the wife. My husband really appreciated having her there to ask questions (and vent about the prolonged process!). I also got the package with the photography and the photos Noleen took are so very special to us. It's actually hard to narrow down which ones to frame. There is one that Noleen captured of my husband crying immediately after the baby was born. It's something I didn't notice or even see because I was so focused on the baby. But every time I see that picture, I tear up (currently tearing up as I'm writing this!). I never would have known that moment even existed without Noleen capturing it! We also had her do the postpartum visit with photos and I've sent them to so many family members and they all agree that Noleen did a fantastic job! I could go on and on, but I want others to read this, so I don't want to be too lengthy :). I will definitely be reaching out to Noleen as soon as I find out I'm pregnant with baby #2 (God willing!).

Noleen helped keep me grounded through transition, encouraged me through pushing and captured moments that will forever be amazing to my family and me. It's hard to come across a practice where ALL the providers are top notch. Usually there's one great provider with the others being mediocre at best. That's not the case here! Regardless of who ends up being the midwife when you give birth, you won't be disappointed! Secondly, I am extremely thankful for their ability to provide modern care with a holistic approach. The reason I chose Aurora is because they are truly up-to-date on natural approaches to pregnancy management and what is considered safe vs not. Most modern providers don't give you advice on nutrition, natural pain management (because that doesn't exist), nor do they make sure you are ok mentally. From my previous pregnancy, where I received care from an OB at another practice, I was treated as if pregnancy was a medical condition and the provider never asked for consent. They used scare tactics to talk me into getting things and doing things that I would never normally agree to. With Aurora, they take pride in asking consent for every single action before doing so. I had never experienced care where they actually consider the individual's values and opinions and not just their educated beliefs. Lastly, the whole experience of the birth was amazing and enlightening. During my first pregnancy, many things went haywire and it felt very much like a medical procedure. With Aurora, my birth at home was very peaceful and hands off. The midwives assured me every step along the way to trust my body and to do what it was asking me to do. By trusting them and listening to my body's intuition, I was able to have the best, quickest birth at home with my husband and toddler! Overall, I would give them 10/10 and recommend Aurora Midwifery to any momma who is currently pregnant. Although it's most likely my last pregnancy, I would choose Aurora time and time again for pregnancy care.

Being first time parents,…read moretransitioning out of work and into this new life of parenting a newborn, we needed all the support we could get to help us get off the ground as we came home from the hospital. Chelsea was absolutely incredible, she was with us for the evenings the first week our little one came into the world. We also had her back for the week my husband transitioned back to work so I could get caught up on sleep. Chelsea taught us a lot of great tricks to try for calming our fussy baby, she helped around the house, and she's the swaddle queen. Ask for a lesson and practice, you won't regret it. She was open to our long list of continuous questions, and helped us see that we had to continue to try a combination of things until something worked to soothe our baby. Chelsea also continued to reinforce our efforts and remind us we were doing a great job, even on days we were ready to give up. I'm so grateful to Anna at Arizona Doulas for making the time to have an introductory call with us at the beginning to help us understand how a doula could be beneficial. Anna provided the various options and let us customize our support needs. Anna made sure we knew this journey was about us and getting situated and acclimated as a newly expanded family. I apologize for the length of this review, but want to share my experience with New Direction. Even…read morethough my treatment time with them was short, sadly I did not have the experience that I had hoped for. I was referred by my OB/GYN for help with better management of my PCOS symptoms and the hope to get to a place where I could conceive naturally, or with minimal help/treatment. My first consultation with Dr. Derman was okay. He was professional, and initially made me feel heard. I was given two options for helping my PCOS: 1) lose weight, possibly with a GLP1 from my PCP, to see if that helped with my PCOS and allowed me to conceive or 2) jump into ovulation induction medications to get pregnant ASAP. Ultimately I chose to go the GLP1 route through my PCP and put a hold on option 2. Dr. Derman prescribed me a birth control, as he wanted me to try to regulate my cycle and I needed to be on BC if I started taking a GLP1. I started having "breakthrough bleeding" on the pill, which I was expecting. However, the bleeding lasted for 75 days. While it wasn't heavy bleeding the entire time, it was enough to have to use my menstrual cup every day for those 75 days. I reached out to the clinic a few times during those 75 days to express concern and to ask "how long is too long?" Every time I got the same answer, to continue taking the pill and that the bleeding was to be expected; that there was no concern unless I was filling my menstrual cup within a couple of hours. I discussed this with my PCP, who helped me make the decision to change my birth control pill. I started a new pill, and the bleeding stopped within 10 days. It was clear that the birth control Dr. Derman put me on was not ideal for my body...but they didn't seem to care, even when I told them the constant bleeding was taking a physical and mental toll. I decided to no longer seek any care through New Direction. To me, it felt like my care was put on the back burner since I wasn't trying to actively get pregnant. It felt like I wasn't worth their time or effort, and it was very disheartening. Sadly, this ruined their reputation for me. If I couldn't count on them to listen to a concern about a birth control pill, it doesn't instill a lot of trust that they'll be the right providers for me should I need fertility treatment.

Her way to support you is to provide a detailed but succinct visit note in a timely manner after your visit. She encourages you to ask questions and no question is silly. She also is very understanding if you walk into your appointment and your baby immediately has a massive diaper blowout. Ask me how I know.
