Grange Shopping Centre in Birkenhead offers a wide variety of small and larger shops, coffee shops…read moreand cafes, electronic stores, bakeries and much more. What I like most about this shopping centre is that there even some independent small businesses here. It's not ALL Sayers, the O2 Shop, Home Bargains, et al. Another neat thing about this particular shopping centre is the exceptionally large amount of charity shops you will find here. If you love bargain hunting, second hand book browsing, and vintage/rescued clothing, you'll have a blast perusing the wares in the many different charity shops here. I find it difficult to drag myself away. Of course if you do prefer the chain stores, and the big names, you will find some of them here, as well as in the Pyramid Shopping Centre just next door.

It was so long ago that I'd actually forgotten my way around, so I needed to refresh my bearings once I set myself on the opposite side of the Mersey! One place which stood out from the rest had to be the Pyramids Shopping mall. I was impressed by the design of the mall with its high ceilings, letting in sheds of natural daylight for a pleasant shopping experience. In particular, the food court was attractive offering a wide range of restaurants to suit a variety of tastes. Although not the largest of malls, Pyramids does host a spectrum of trendy shops and not just branded clothes stores (like most these days), thus there is that striking balance which I feel a successful mall should have.

Well Birkenhead High Street sure is becoming more smack head ridden and derelict, but I must say, the Pyramids is looking cleaner and busier than ever. I hadn't been back to Birkenhead for a good five years but was pleased to see that the Pyramids has all its outlets filled and seems a lot more secure and clean than I remember it. It has a food court, hairdressers, Marks and Spencers, Bodyshop, Dorothy Perkins, and a host of other retail outlets within minutes of each other. I guess it's one of the nicest places to shop in Birkenhead as you don't feel as though you're about to get asked for spare change or mugged at any given moment. Given that, it's still Birkenhead, so do yourself a favour and get the train over to Liverpool! It's much nicer!

This shopping mall is HUGE and has many floors that are accessible via stairs or escalator. Seems like a great place to come for your every day needs and even for special occasion wants. They have luxury brand stores & more casual clothing stores. Lots of different coffee shops here, as well, lovely for a pick me up while doing some shopping! By the Starbucks, there are stairs with each step covered with turf that made for a pleasant area to sit and rest before getting up to shop again or just walk around.

Where Grand Central features many of the refugees from Quiggins, Gostins houses a large number of…read moreoutcasts from when the Palace decided to toss out all its stalls in favour of late night bars. However, whereas Grand Central has settled in like a divorcee on your sofa, Gostins has suffered from both being slightly out of the way and the temporary feel of its accommodation. Gostins is still worth a visit though, especially for the book shop that used to be in the Bluecoat (another outcast) and Route 69 hairdressers.

What a great little smattering of shops including collectables and antiques, handmade jewellery, home-made cakes, Wicca and goth, used books, and so much more. Probably my favourite shop in here is Collage which offers a really delightful selection of antiques and collectables at great prices. I also really like Mookow Army and Bluecoat Books. Some of the shops are not open during all regular business hours so you may find a few closed when you pop in but keep coming back to visit the various ones you missed before. I know that's my plan!

Granted, it was extremely close to store closing time - but unfortunately the bodily functions of eight month olds do not align to timetabling notions like "David" must apply to the staff under his care. Simply put he kicked us out with a soiled baby and a smile on his face. Look, I understand that people are just doing their jobs and that closing time is a difficult time. But this level of callous disregard for the needs of a vulnerable human being (a baby) is just appalling. On a different note, there were three ladies there, also being kicked out. We all were people of colour. Make of that what you will.

There is always an excellent mix of stall here selling produce such as sweets, plants, coffee, cheeses, specialist sausages, specialist meats, beers, smoothies, cakes, black & white pudding and much much more. Many of the stalls have free samples to try and the smell that emits from the market is delicious. The produce on sale is often more expensive than you would find in supermarkets but this is to be expected. The produce is of an excellent quality and you wont find many of the specialist items in supermarkets at all. This is a great addition to the Lark Lane community.

Drinkers mill about with students - presuming there's a difference between the two - and "dedicated followers of fashion". What a perfect place for a farmers market. This market, held on the last Saturday of every month, is bigger than its counterpart in Woolton Village, although it does suffer slightly in comparison as half of it is on the edge of busy Aigburth road. A great plant stall selling lovely and unusual bushes at very decent prices greets those who enter the market from Lark Lane. The kind of stall Woolton is missing out on. There's myriad cake and bakery stalls selling pasties, pies, pastries and bread and the ever present Savin Hill Farm meat stall, which sells sausages presumably butchered in Heaven. Last time I went, today (28 August), there was a fantastic flower stall with some of the sunniest sunflower bouquets I've ever seen for a mere £3. A very good place to visit every now and again, but it rarely changes, which is a shame.
