A Sacred Choice - Memorial Service

    A Sacred Choice

A simple search on Yelp for cremation services for my mother a couple of months ago matched me with…read moreA Sacred Choice. While my mom had not passed away yet when I began my search, I wanted to be prepared and have a cremation service/organization in mind as I know when the time came, I wouldn't be able to think. Lacey and I corresponded several times via Yelp messages and each time, she was extremely helpful.     Eventually, our Yelp messages turned into regular email messages between myself along with Lacey and Berry from A Sacred Choice. They both answered my questions in a timely manner - usually within minutes! I found not only were their cremation services the most cost effective, but they truly go above and beyond and are there for their clients and their families.     When the time became closer to needing their services, my mom had told me that she wanted my child and I to have necklaces that contained her ashes once she was cremated. I reached out to Lacey and Bery once more and they emailed me a catalog of jewelry choices along with urns; since the catalog was so large and difficult to read on my phone, I requested that they mail me a physical copy. Lacey and Bery did just that - and expedited the delivery to next day!     Bery has been amazing ever since I began emailing her, but even more so when my mom passed away while home on hospice. The hospice nurse and I called A Sacred Choice in the early morning hours, close to 3 or 4am after mom's time came, and Bery was the kindest person I had spoken to given the situation. Bery apologized for our loss, told us the next steps, and offered to obtain mom's information via phone, or if needed, I could call back at a later time.     When the gentlemen arrived to pick up my beautiful mother, they were respectful and apologetic for my loss as well. They were also extremely professional.  I knew what my mom's wishes were after she passed as previously mentioned and I expressed them to Bery when looking through their catalog. I didn't want to spend a fortune on an urn that would eventually be tossed after my mom's ashes were spread - once I stated this, Bery was so very generous and said that I could have a scattering tube that a vendor had left. It was as if it were meant to be - the scattering tube had a beach scene on it, which my mom always loved.   During the course of a couple weeks' time, Bery kept me informed every step of the way. If I ever had any questions, she was always quick to answer them via text, email, or phone call. Bery also notified me of key dates, such as when mom was scheduled to be cremated. When all of my mom's items were ready (ashes, necklaces, and death certificates), Bery offered to drop them all off at my residence. I have never heard of such an organization that goes this far above and beyond for their clients. For all of this, I am extremely grateful.    I cannot recommend A Sacred Choice enough. You will not be disappointed.

It's so difficult to find a trustworthy place to care for your loved one. After extensive searching and countless calls, I met Bery at A Sacred Choice. I was a bit skeptical at first when I saw this business had nothing but 5 star reviews. I thought to myself, it's too good to be true. I was wrong. I now know that every review that has been given is genuine. Bery has been heaven sent to my family. From day one, this woman text me with full support and checked in almost daily. She made this process so easy by taking all my burdens away. Community and empathy was constant and genuine. This woman took care of EVERYTHING. I cannot thank you enough Bery and A Sacred Choice for supporting us through this grieving process. You have given me back time to grieve peacefully without wasting hours on the phone. If you are considering A Sacred Choice, trust that you and your loved one will be loved and taken care of. You cannot put a price on the quality of service provided. Bery you are an incredible human being, and words and a review cannot express the gratitude I have for your kindness.

The area is mostly industrial, so I found the…read morelocation unassuming and would have passed it before noticing the address number, had it not been for GPS. However, the parking lot is roomy for the size and easy to navigate. My experience with cremation has been limited and from what I can tell, there are slight differences between cities, so I can't be sure of the norm in Houston. With our experience I dealt with another company who handled the death certificates and transport from the hospital. Later, they emailed us that we could pick up the ashes at this location and to call for an appointment. When I called and spoke to Carol, I found out an appointment was not necessary though, as long as you come within the available hours. The available time frame is 10am to 3pm. I am sure of this because I wrote it down. I want to say it was weekdays only, but to be honest, I was really distracted during the call and I'm just not sure. It's clear they do the cremation on site and the building is very large. We entered into a small foyer and were greeted by Carol. She directed us into a waiting room to the right where we waited for a few minutes. The waiting room was really lovely and tastefully decorated. It was clearly meant to be a peaceful, calming space. There was a covered window inside, so it may also be a viewing room. The designated person, either the spouse or beneficiary, will need to provide id and sign off. You are provided with a certificate and a temporary urn that is placed in a leather case and then inside a cardboard box. We were offered the opportunity to view some urns in the back. We were in the process of making other arrangements, so we declined and I cannot comment on their selection. If you are looking to get something ready before picking up the remains, I can tell you that the dimensions of their temporary urn are 8.5 x 6.25 x 4.75 inches. I was originally going to give this place 4 stars... and then I realized I didn't know why I was rating that way. I'm honestly not sure how to rate such a place and I do attempt to keep emotion out of my reviews, so I was a little lost on that. There is also the fact that I have no idea how this place is supposed to measure up to other places in town and frankly, I hope I never have to know that. I can think of several factors that could vary for your experience versus mine. The entire process for us took about two weeks, however, I am not clear on when the other company made the arrangements with Southeast Texas Crematory. They may operate faster if you go through a funeral home. We actually needed that two weeks to plan the memorial service and handle some other things, so it worked out for us. I am also not clear on how their prices may change in regards to which place is using them. We paid the other company and our total price included transport, a weight fee, cremation and death certificates. I can tell you it was $901, but not how much of that went to Southeast Texas Crematory. I found the staff to be very respectful of our loss and everything about this place struck the appropriate tone. In the end, I have no complaints about our experience with them, so a 5 star rating is more appropriate.

They want to charge me $995 dollars to carve his first name and life-dates on a pre-existing headstone (my mother and father are already buried there). His funeral was arranged at another funeral home near where I live, then we made arrangements to have is body buried next to our mother/father at Rosewood. The headstone engraving fee line item from the funeral home near where we live is $200. Rosewood will not allow the other funeral home's vendor on their property. When I spoke to the manager at Rosewood they told me their policy only allows me buy that through Rosewood -- at a cost of $995. That's an insane price for that service -- I feel like I'm being taken advantage of and gouged by a self-serving policy Rosewood has. P.S. Rosewood had previously charged us $995 to add my father's first name and dates to the headstone alongside my mom's. At the time I thought that was a ridiculous price but with my mom already there and with us using them for the funeral service, they kinda had us over a barrel so I just "ate it". Now that we're adding my brother to the site an I have a competitive $200 quote from another reputable funeral home, there's not a snowball's chance I'm paying them another $995 to do that.
